Title: My carbon fiber cowl hood
Post by: 5.8fastcat on December 02, 2011, 12:32:30 AM
some that have made it to the "thundercat dyno days"  may have seen
the mold that I made off of the hood on my car.

Anyway finally got around in making the hood in Carbon Fiber

All i need to do now is trim it up and fit it to the car the attach the
2 parts together

Total weight of the carbon hood is 6.5lbs

the other hood tipped the scale at 61 lbs:punchballs:

Have plans to paint the upper and lower section and leave the sides of the cowl exposed carbon

The material wasnt to bad i think $500 for everything the carbon fiber and the material to make the mold

If I only had the extra bank, I'd have you make me one. I like the idea of leaving the sides carbon. That'll look killer. You have an idea what you'd charge for one??

WOW.. $500? that's not bad at all, considering what you'd pay for 1, if they were even available for these cars

I'd settle for the little panel just rear of the doors and below the beltline. I'm getting tired of having the rust fixed every few years.

How did you make the mold for your hood?  Is the carbon fiber matt the resin pre impregnated stuff?  Havent researched it a whole lot yet, but loosing another 45-50# off the front of the car would be great!  Maybe off the trunk too, lol.
Sorry to bring this back from the dead

I've never done it on a car, but my dad works at an aerospace systens contractor and has a lot of experiance with carbo fiber. I have dones some carbon fiber model airplanes, and it really isn't bad. I'm more of a function over form type of person though, and my stuff didn't look very good. I gave up and went back to balsa and fiberglass.
