whats your car weigh? i wanna shed some LBS off my tbird but still keep the interior stock lookin. wanna try a grudge race. any tips??
i'm ashamed to say my blue TC only lost about 200-250 when i ditched the 4 cyl EFI, factory alt wiring, AC junk and some un-needed items (cruise control unit, factory amp, EQ, radio and all the wiring).. i think it gained more than that back with the 413 and turbo setup :( .. she probably weighs about 1-200 over the original weight
The last time I weighed the Sport, it was 3340 lbs.
On the tracks scale 3375 lbs.
Mine weighed 3560 on the track scales, which included 2/3 tank of gas, mini spare, and small tool bag, still has all options and dual power seats... With driver 3760...
mine still has the full interior, fancy trunk carpet, two amps and one 10"sub 3,000lbs without my 225lbs a$$
anyone care to tell wut they took out or stripped to get the weight down. i would like my car to be 3,000 lbs
a good start is to se all the sound deadener off the floor boards and trunk floor.. you'll get more road noise inside the car, but it's a good start
these bumpers dropped like 70lbs

I weighed my '97 when I first got it. With a full tank of gas it was right at 3,600...
where did you get those from?
he built them himself
And I'm going to THANK 347thunder alot for seeing what he came up with. My aluminum bumper should be done tomorrow. My steel bumper with all the triangles cut out of it with the supports and everything was still 28#. I'm hoping my aluminum one will be less than 10# even with the extra fog light brackets and stuff I put on mine.
I sed 40# of the glued on sound deadener off the floors. Theres probably another 40 of jute batting on the back of the carpet, but I just left the whole works out. All thats on the interior of mine is to race buckets and a dash, lol
i'd be interested to hear everything 347thunder has done to lighten his car.. my blue TC is overweight because i wanted to keep all the amenities it came with from the factory, with the exception of the factory stereo, to keep it comfortable and (almost) stock appearing on the interior side of things
Another couple of the big offenders are the power seats and the power window guts. I wouldn't sacrifice the PW myself. Along with the sound deadening on the floor, you would be surprised how much weight the carpet holds. It was a pain in the balls but i ripped everything (padding and what not) from the underside of the carpet. After steam cleaning and drying i was shocked that the carpet weighed like nothing. Obviously you pick up alot of noise doing that but in a fun street car or a "race car" who cares.
While the 87-88 Fox T-birds are heavier than their Fox mustang counter parts, they are pretty close to the SN95s. Mine (mustang) was 3400-3500 with myself and a friend in it. Both of us are around 170.
i don't want to sacrifice any of the power amenities.. i already ditched my sound deadener and all the garbage that was glued to the bottom of the carpet.. i'm considering throwing my heater box and controls in the trash, since the car doesn't see rain, sleet or snow.. i left in it 'just in case,' but with my new TC, it'll see even less street time.. it'll never be a 'full on' race car, since i already have my capri that's basically stripped and my black TC that'll eventually be turned into a full blown trailered race car.. but i'd still like to lighten the blue car up
Well my post was more for the OP but, if the car is barely driven and your considering tossing the climate control anyway, why not wax the uber heavy power seats? I'd make a bracket and set them where I want them in that case or at the very least manual tracks.
because i like my power seats lol i did however ditch the power mirror harness and junk because (as usual) they didn't work, plus it's not something i touch often, if ever
You guys are right on with the carpet padding,
My carpet weighed in at about 50# untouched, And then only about 8# after sing all the padding off the underside!.
Different seats, all sound deadner, aluminum bumpers, aluminum heads,k-member, A-arms,coil overs front and rear, doors stock with power windows, rims, no a/c or heater and that's about it, I thought I would drop some weight with the spool but with th weight of the new axles it was dead even. It should be a little lighter since I just took out the a/c box in the dash and A LOT of wire from the fuel injection.
Mine is a factory LX car with every option but a sunroof. With 3/4 tank of gas and an empty trunk (minus the spare and jack) the car weighs 3560 lbs. With me in the car it weighs 3710 lbs.
thanks guys. i plan on doin a k member swap in the spring when i switch motors n etc.. i think i am doin remove the sound dednen n stuff for now
I don't think I could own one of these without the power moon roof :0(
I went the opposite route. I added the second power seat for the passenger, new a/c (after going a/c delete like an idiot for years) added sound deadener everywhere. I want comfort and power. If it was an all out track car all the time, sure, lighten the Sport, but 99.9% of the time, it's just driving around and going from here to there. Comfort wins.
Got to agree with Vinnie.
There is no way I'm stripping my car for 400 lbs. :D
race car vs comfortable street car is a drastically different build in terms of weight.. if you want comfort, than it's obvious that you're not going to strip luxuriates from the car.. but for me and 347thunder, it's not all about the luxury and sound deadening.. it's about the performance and performance cars are typically lightened
Except for the uber heavy power seats. We'll keep those:punchballs:
After this winter, my autox car will weigh in at 2700# or less. Depends on how crazy I get cutting I guess.
i like my power seats! the car isn't a race car, it's more of a street/strip car but to a different extent than most cars here.. i want to lighten it, but not at the expense of my all-time favorite seats.. if it was going to be a race car, than i would ditch the whole interior, stock dash and column included, like i'll be doing to the black TC next summer/fall/winter
