i am needing a driver side tail light in good shape for a 83-84 mercury cougar. this is the last thing i need before i can drive my cougar so please help me.

No, 83-84 and 85-86 are specific. You can modify an 85-86 style to work in an 83-84 housing, but its more trouble then its worth, unless your going to do both sides.

i would have already did the 85-86 setup if both were messed up and then been able to drive my cougar. but instead i stuck trying to find the hardest tail light around a stock driver side tail light.

I saw a decent light at the junkyard today. I wasn't sure if you still needed one but I can go grab it if you do. I'll post a pic in a bit.
