Title: bad engine noise
Post by: lakenheath24 on October 15, 2011, 01:01:55 PM
The ole girl was making an awful sound all of a sudden. Of course I am thinking...rod/piston or lifter, BUT, turns out the exhaust manifold gasket couldnt take it anymore.  Of course, with nearly 270k on the clock I forgave it.

I'm surprised it had a gasket. My TC's never did.

Kudos on the mileage. That is pretty cool having one with that kind of stamina!

whatcha supposed to use?  The copper spray stuff?  This was quicker actually as I didnt need to remove anything but the manifold bolts.  This is my DD car, but I have a high HP motor build going on for my "good" car.  Should I use the copper spray on that?

That copper spray STUFF!!!! People actually think that works!!!! It is an old WIVES TALE!!! Just make sure the surface is clean and FLAT. Then bolt up the manifold Finished!!

I read an article one time about mechanics fixing airplane engines in the Pacific during WWII. Parts were in short supply. If they didn't have a new gasket, they would paint the old one with aluminum paint and reuse it.

I don't know anyone that has ever reused a gasket before. Not even on a set of heads.
