Title: I had to do it........
Post by: vinnietbird on September 26, 2011, 01:25:35 PM
I joined a gym today. It starts Friday. I decided to get back into my military shape, and this was the best way to do it. I have gained a few extra pounds, and although I feel strong, I don't feel as strong as I used to, so I figured that a trainer and routine workout would be a good thing. Updates every other week.

That's been my problem. I'm always setting a date in the future to do it. well, tomorrow never comes, so, I made the point to do it now. Otherwise, I'll never get started. So, starting Friday when I am officially "on board", the process starts.

Well, it's the 7th of October, and I've been going every weekday for an hour to an hour and a half. I've lost 11 pounds since last Wednesday simply by doing what the trainer tells me to do and changing my diet. I don't have a specific goal as far as weight loss, specific waist size, etc. Just getting in a lot better shape and be happy with the results. I'll keep going and doing all I can. It's already making a big difference. I'm not in killer pain every time I leave the gym now.LOL. For the first few days, pain....a lot of pain. New pain every day. Now, My body is getting used to the workout. I still have a way to go, but eventually, I'll be doing great. I haven't eaten at a fast food place in about 2 weeks. That's awesome for me. I never went a lot, but at least once a week for a burger or something. I've been eating a lot better and find myself eating less and getting full faster. I'm starting to get used to it as far as it becoming more of a daily routine...which is what I want...go to the gym without even thinking about it....I almost talked myself out of it today, but luckily I didn't. That's the kind of habit I have to let go of. Monday he is going to get my measurements and a picture (I'll be keeping my shorts on !!!) so there's something to compare to in the future. I'm kind of curious as well. I am curious to see what kind of results (or lack of....) there will be by the end of the year, then a year from now.

I'm basically just writing as though I'm talking to myself. Burning some energy.

Your sport might rebel against you for not spending that time with her. Good for you.

Hey Kitz, I've been making sure that she gets quality time, and gym time is in the evening when she's usually resting anyway. She knows there's a new intake coming soon for her as well. I think she's excited.. I can tell by the way she looks at me.

LOL. Very true. Even after a total of 8 days at the gym, and eating a lot better, I'm feeling a lot better already, and my clothes are already fitting better. Hopefully in a couple of more months I'll see a lot bigger difference. I get off work at 3:00 then head to the school to pick my son up at 10 til 4, then at the gym usually by 4:20 or so, work out for 45 minutes to an hour, home, shower, supper, couch and TV.

Vinnie, you're always on the go...I thought I had a pretty fast pace, mine just comes at the expense of sleep, though.

Today is exactly two weeks (9 days at the gym), and I'm down 155 pounds so far. I  go Monday through Friday, off the weekends from the gym. So far so good.....unless I relapse.....which I'm not planning on doing.

Down 155# in two weeks?  Wow!  ;)

Good work, Vin.  I just took the past week off myself.  After training hard all summer for those 5K trail races and doing that1/2 marathon trail race a week ago...I needed a break.  Back at it now.

Keep at it.

First, not 155. LOL. I mis-typed. I'm down 15 pounds (error corrected in my above post). I'm still trying to talk myself out of going from time to time, but I go anyway. I want it to be more of a daily habit/routine, not a c. I'm in the middle right now. I can tell a big difference already.  Thanks for the support Chuck !!! That stuff really does help with the motivation.

Congratulations man, I always feel better after going for a nice run in the morning.  Just something about getting your heart beating keeps you pumped all day. Best of luck to you.

As I'm sure that you know, going to a gym (or just working out) needs to just be what you do.  It needs to be as routine as going to work or anything else that you do regularly.

Congrats on your progress ---- and this is my support for you.

Thanks a lot. I appreciate that. I actually missed going today due to finishing the Cobra intake on the Sport. I really felt almost guilty. I'll make up for it tomorrow. No doubt about it.

so any updates.... I started my diet around the same time you did yours,(but I had to take 4 months off due to my back injury). I'm down 45 lbs since I started and went from 25% body fat down to 16% body fat.I got a trainer that shaved the last 20lbs and leaned me up real good. I have the diet plan if anyone wants it, it works awesome.

Whats on the diet plan? Wife became a diabetic and we eat pretty well accordingly but gets hard to decide what to eat with what, can't eat bread with pasta like we used to or as much bread as we used to.

I'm down about 30 pounds, eating well most of the time. I can't get to the gym as much as I want do to the job (12 hour shifts 4 to 5 days a week), so, gotta find time to run, lift my own weights and some cardio. I feel great, and still have my cat like reflexes.

Don't think i could do that diet lol^

My main problem is portion sizes and an irish love of potatoes. I'm not to bad of shape, 5'10 or so. 210, but I wear a size 32x32 pants and med to large shirts, and only reason I wear large is my chest and arms fit snug in a med. I'd like to be 230 of muscle but haven't had time to lift in years since getting a "real" job.

Also in reference to eye of the tiger,
Talking about how to make 80's songs better, this one is about eye of the tiger.
The Only Way It Could Be Better:
Tone it down a little, for the love of god! Nearly everything is unbelievably dangerous while listening to "Eye of the Tiger." Here s a little exercise that illustrates perfectly what this song is capable of. Think of the weakest, most pedestrian c you can do, for example, doing laundry. Now play "Eye of the Tiger" in the background. If, by the end of that spin cycle you haven t managed to somehow kill a grizzly bear with fabric sheets or make sweet love to every woman within 40 yards, then you need to see a coroner because you apparently died the night before.

Uh........ maybe the decimal point needs to disappear from that %. 12% is the minimum for males. I just got an ear-full from my wife when I read that post to her. She was an ICU nurse for 5 yrs, now she's in a surgical interventional office. Just my .02

using the military neck, waist and chest ratio ,,

does that mean anything to anyone?  im not a doctor but i understand how to use a tape.

the ratio is probably the part the nurse does not understand, perhaps its not accurate to a civilian nurse or comprehension of what the numbers mean.  I do know that when you hit 16% body fat in the navy, you were in the chub club.

most people today are too fat anyway, all the time spent sitting around doesnt help and the kids have more reason to sit and do nothing than ever before.  survival of the fittest i suppose, eventually everyone will learn to get up and do something.

I wish you weren't so hard headed.......

Your body's organs start to shut down somewhere between 2% and 5%, that happens whether you are in the military or not. Body builders spend months on a very strict diet and workout routine to reach those levels.

Vinnie, glad you are taking the initiative to regain your health! I'm amazed at how few people try to maintain a healthy weight.

Personally, I just lost 20 pounds and am holding steady at 6'4" and 215 pounds.

I've been eating well, just portion control and my job is pretty sedentary. Used to lift every day but (and I know its an excuse) I just feel like I have the time for it now. As a result of that and my love of booze I have got a small spare tire starting.

I hardly think that is necessary.

I can back you up with regard to the way the Military determined members of the "Chub Club", in decades past, but that doesn't mean that they were doing it right or that it was accurate.  Back in those days we had little else to do while under way for entertainment, besides watching movies and working out.  I can't count on all of my digits how many people were placed on probation for having neck, check and waist sizes larger than "normal", but who could routinely bench and leg press a Mack truck.

found it,, far cry from what i thought earlier but still a far cry from what is percieved as "min for males" today.    Not sure why the min today is higher than it was 15 or 20 years ago when it was designated as min 6% according to some old medical records i have.  dono, times change i suppose.

this was when i got fat apparently,,LOL
10 and 11%.
