I'm going to be running 275-60's and can't get the car low enough with the stock wheelwells. I think I might just cut the stock wells out and add about a three inch strip to them. Has anybody done this or actually properly minitubbed their Tbird / Cougar?
I have 275 40 17's out back, and they fit great, and there's a lot of tire there. I personally don't know of a tubbed car here, but there may be.
Yeah, there's plenty of room to stuff a big tire under there. The problem is there isn't enough room to put the car down around the tire. I'm going to need the inside of the well to be about where the inside of the shock mount is.
Maybe a mini tub IS the way to go. What size wheels? How much room between the outer fender lip and tire?
how low are you wanting to go?
I'll be using 15x10's, I won't know how much room I'll have between the tire and outer lip until the housing gets narrowed and I decide on backspacing.
The front will be about an inch lower than this when it's together and I want the back to be level, I hate rake.
What suspension setup are you going with for the lowering of the car? I always wonder about ride quality and being able to take a speed bump at a realistic speed.
I'm using coilovers all the way around and all Team Z suspension. It is 100% race car.
You may want to do a little searching on the site. I don't recall the name of member, but he has a couple Birds with big blocks (460Tbird?). I know he has one w/295-15 and I think he's fit 325's under another with stock wheel wells.
My car sets low and I've put a set of 275-60's on mine with a Turbo Coupe width rear end and 6.5" back space with no issue (though my wheel width is a bit small at 8", the tire section width is comparible).
A Mustang would be a problem. I've had to roll the fender lip and beat the inner fenders to get the same tire under my Mustang.
Yeah, I saw that he had 325-50's with the stock wells but the car sits too high. I like my stuff to be SLAMMED. Do you have any pics of how low your car is with 275-60's?
Here is a TUB JOB we did. I am in the process of doing my TC . I am going to run 345's on the rear. This car was tubbed all the way to the frame rails. And i also moved the frame rails in. A LOT!!!!

That's awesome. Do you have any pics of either car from the inside, like through the trunk or through the cabin with the back seat out? I don't intend to go too far with mine, I won't be running anything over a 28x10.5W but it will usually be a 275-60. I'll be notching the frame rail but I can't actually move the rails because I'm staying with stock suspension. I'm only doing this to get the car in the weeds.
Actually if you are not going to move the rails. Tubbing is just sheet metal fabing. Remember these two things. Never cut both sides at the same time. And never do it with the car on the ground. The car must be on stands level and on a concrete floor, This way the body wont flex. I see people cut both quarters off at once and i cant believe my eyes. I have seen shops do this. The best place to do it is on the frame machine. I know most people do not have access to one. But it can be dun at home with some patients and a little common sense. I will have to take photos of the inside. It is no big deal you loose trunk space HA HA HA!!!
Here is another angle of the tubs!! Can you see the NOTCH in the frame rail. This is another way of doing it. But you have to install heavy plate inside the rail and weld it in like this photo below

Yeah, the car is on stands right now in pieces for through the floors which is what got me looking closer into the tub situation. I was hoping I could just use Mustang minitubs but now I don't think they're going to work. Oh well, just more fabbing lol. It's a small obstacle in the grand scheme of things.
Yeah, that's cool. Your stuff looks to be a little more "show" than mine lol. I've got 4130 and 1/8" steel everywhere. Ah, the joys of chassis fab lol.
Tubbing mine, just haven't got that far yet. So I'm subscribing for a better read later.
You can also roll the fenders with a rolling tool. That will give you more room and it works real good. It is limited but you can gain at least an inch. Just another option.
I don't have a pic with the 60's but this one is the equivilent of a 275-50. Though it may look decieving the car has about 3" of ground clearance for the mechanicals and exhaust (it ses everytime I pull in my driveway).
If getting it slammed it what you'd like, there's no doubt the room runs out, the higher the tire gets in the wheel house!
Her
Thanks for the pic, it looks good. I probably wouldn't want to go much lower if it was a street car at all but I can get away with slamming it since it's not. Yeah, a lot of people don't realize how a real 275 fits on a slammed car. Thirty just isn't any room once it gets so low.
Thanks for the pics, Tom. The only thing that's really throwing me with doing this to the Tbird are the funky gaps behind the stock wells where the spare sits and whatever was on the passenger side. I am not a body guy. If I cut the stock wells out I want to make sure I'm not going to have any issues with the quarter panels flexing at the bottom without the supports. I've just glanced at it so far so it might not even be an issue, I'll take a closer look tomorrow.
these are 275/50/15 and this was as low as I could go and they just about touch pulling into the driveway.

Lol that C5 reminds me of the Batmobile for some reason in that pic.

my blue bird has a slight minitub in her.. i mainly just cut the top half of the well out and mated a 16ga. trailer fender to it and covered the inner side, mating it to the existing lower half of the factory wheel well.. i have 15x8's with a 27x10.50 tire that fits nicely up in there with the 2-1/2" drop.. i'll see if i have any pictures of it in my old phone
