Getting ready to get the car out of storage so i can work on her again. I need a new project since i sold the Torino Convertible. The first picture many of you have seen is from 1987 when i first bought the car with 27,000 miles on her.
The rest show her in its present state, no mods of any kind, a true time capsule.
Enjoy!

Looks like a fun project. Especially sense you have a 20 + year history with the car. I'll bet you hated to see the Torino go....That is a sweet ride. I once had a 68 Fairlane 500 rag top but it turned out to be a rust bucket...I had to call uncle on that one. It was too far gone. Kinda funny - I saw it again at the local U-Pill it 3 years after I sold it...I guess the next guy came to the same conclusion. I sold it as a parts car & lost my a$$ on that one...You live & learn I guess.
Good luck with the bird. I'm sure you will enjoy it again.
Thanks for the encouraging words.......i will miss the Torino for sure, but the T-Bird has a special significance for me...i grew up with that car, dated my wife, many adventures, road trips etc....
Good luck with bringing the bird back, the Torino was sweet, but the bird can be just as sweet, especially since you've owned it most of its life.
No real rust? I actually like how the 83-84 interiors are. Hate that steering wheel. Same one as my wagon.
Ditch the trx rims. Talk about money with those tires.
What are the plans for this?
I plan to keep the car as stock as possible as these are becoming more rare in original unmolested condition. The only cosmetic non-stock item will be some 5.0 call outs on the fenders, i always liked them. As for engine mods, when the block is rebuilt i will do some mild upgrades, but it will maintain its stock appearance. The dash pad, headliner and carpet all need to be redone, the back seats are perfect, no cracks in the leather, and i have a mint pair of Leather front seats that i bought off ebay 5 years ago for 75 shipped to replace the cracking old ones on there now. I am keeping the TRX wheels too even though the tires are a fortune to run. I like them alot and you just dont see them that much anymore.......
I am digging the 1987 fashion you have going on in that old picture. Good stuff. Also, that is a nice Ebay deal for replacement front seats. Look forward to seeing the progress.
Hehe, you're on AFF :P
great to see it getting some lovin
There's no such thing as to far gone in my book...... It just needed some extra lovin, ,that's all
Looks like it's going to be a real nice project...I know you been collecting stuff for a while now..
Don't go too nuts with the engine upgrades. The EEC-III system will freak out.
Indeed, I have Jerry...i have some nice NOS goodies for the project.
I am not going nuts, just some mild mods, nothing to wild.....
So i was wondering what you guys think of a few light mods to the car as i really want to keep the originality as much as possible as its a true survivor car.
1.Dual Exhausts
2.Some internal engine mods (some port work, new cam , stronger valve springs.. maybe an aftermarket, stock appearing coil to boost the spark a little)
3. 5.0 fender call outs ( I always liked the looks of these)
Im curious what all of your thoughts are.....
is there much to be had from the CFI system?
I'm for all of them except the 5.0 badges on the fender , I dont like them even on Stangs :)
In the way of parts or performance?
I agree, the only thing I regret doing to my Thunderbird. I do like them on Mustangs since it was stock on those however lol.
performance.
Good luck and keep us posted. If you find anything interesting during the tear down as far as factory markings, etc. feel free to post it in the thread here:
http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/showthread.php?25246-Original-cars-owners-documentation
When you pull the motor apart, I'd be curious to know if there are any 'nylon' gears behind the timing cover. I've been told they were used around that time.
Good to see another 83 Heritage coming back to life! :D
I will certainly document with loads of pics and report here in detail. My car has the buck tag still and build sheet is safely entombed in the bottom of the passenger seat....
Awesome that you've had the car since 87 and now you get to revisit it. I gotta vote for no on the 5.0 badges. Looks much cleaner without. Just let the exhaust note tell people whats under the hood. There's no mistaking the sound of a 5.0 with flowmasters.
I actually just started driving mine again after 4 years in storage. It was pretty well kept, so no restoration needed. I've had mine for 11 years now and it still puts a huge smile on my face every time i drive it:D
Ok, ok....im convinced, no 5.0 call outs....lol I am really excited to get her running and registered this week........
Maybe a newb question, but what are TRX rims and why are the tires expensive?
Not a newb question at all, its how you learn..... the TRX wheel package was common to 4 eyed Fox body Mustangs and Capri cars from 1979-1983 and Was a pricey add on for Thunderbird for 83/84 They use Metric tires which are only available from pen 15er tire nowadays and cost like $300 per tire. Many people opt for the Ten hole or Turbine 4 lug wheels as the tire sizes are more standard and less costly. If you look at the pics in the beginning of the thread you can see a shot of a TRX rim. Very unique and distinct....
I saw the wheels and I think I've seen them before. Never heard of metric tires before though. Learn something new every day.
So are you gonna pull the motor right away or does it still run and drive?
Going to find out this week, as i need to change some fluids, and get a new battery in her.....then well see.....either way a rebuild is in order. It ran fine when parked 4 years ago.
Went to the storage garage today.....topped off all the fluids, poured a little marvel mystery oil in.....car turned over in 3 cranks. Not bad for a 38 year old car with over 100k on the clock and hasn't been started in almost 5 years. I have to mount the new tires before i can drive it anywhere, as the current ones are dry rotted badly.
When did you trade your '83 in for a '73 hahaha. Just messing with ya man. The only reason I know how old my Cougar is, because it is 4 years older than I am.
Congrats on getting it running again. You already found some TRX tires for it didn't you?
Thanks! The tires arrived today in fact.......
Man, I luvs me a time capsule ---- and it looks like you're gonna have a sweet one!!!
i shall dub her.. the heritage that could! all this CFI/EEC-IV research is hurting my brain.. haha
UPDATE: Car is moving home tonight, and the long road to restoration begins. Pics to follow soon. So the car hasn't moved from its spot in the storage garage since 2007. I parked it with a full tank of premium, and was down to 3/4 tank after all these years. I added 5 gallons of 100 octane and fired her up. Perfect, on the 1st try. Ran smooth and quiet too. Im really excited at the idea of wrenching again on something.
great to hear
That's awsome it started so easily after all that time.
I'll be starting on my 83 heritage later this year. I too have a lot of memories of growing up with that car. It's been in the family since 85 when my father bought it. I inherited it after my father passed in 2001. It sat from 2001 till 2009 when me and a buddy started tinkering with it a little and it was the same deal, a little gas, a little oil, and a new battery and she fired up and ran like I had been running it all along. Got to love Ford small blocks.
Home today.......ran great!

Looks good in the driveway.
WOW!, that looks like it just rolled out of the showroom in '83.....amazing! you don't see em like that anymore
It now needs to go back in the garage out of the rain ;).
It's nice to see it at home.
That was water on the driveway from my hose.....i had to wash a inch of dust off the car.......garage bound it is.
I would like to have seen the dust cloud behind you as you drove away from storage lol
Looks great! It doesn't look like the years of sitting in storage hurt it at all.
Ah I see. Since you're going to restore it close to factory spec are you going to go really crazy and try to replicate the factory inspection marks? I've been trying to figure out where they were for years.
Im not sure how far im going to go on this project. Depends on time and funds......of which i have little of either right now... :-)
Busy day today........i pulled my replacement front seats from storage and cleaned and conditioned the leather. I plan to pull the seats from the car and replace soon, as well as shampoo the hell out of the carpet. Here are a few pics of the replacement seats after i finished them today. Then a few of the ones in the car. I paid $75 including shipping for the pair, and they were mis-listed as 86 seats and no one had bid on them. It was also a no reserve auction and mine was the only bid. That was around 5 years ago.

You defenately got them for a great price. I'd say you needed them pretty bad! lol!
Wow, with shipping charges the way they are today, the seller probably would have paid more than $75 just for shipping. That's better than a good deal, I think you stole them.
Bored tonight so i installed my new seats, and put my control panel on my console back together.......pics to follow tomorrow.
PICS......

That looks alot better!
That looks nice. The seller definitely lost money on that deal.
yes, he was not a happy man.......turns out that he mis-listed the seats as 1986 seats, and these are specific to 83/84 only. I saw the pics and emailed him asking if the items in the photo were the same being offered for sale. I got a one word reply... "yes". The rest is history......
Located my build sheet under the passenger seat after i changed them out......a bit tattered but mostly legible and intact.

David did you see this ???

I did actually...its in my color too, but thats a steep price. I may try painting mine 1st as its solid and no cracks or breaks and its still pretty pliable.......thanks for looking out.
No problem , that's why we are all here :)
I tried installing my NOS cruise control switches tonight as my existing ones have the chrome flaking off. I think the whole wheel has to come off for this.......ugghhh.
It's nothing to remove a steering wheel if you have a harmonic balancer puller or steering wheel puller.
I have neither, but my friend has a well equipped shop, so i will give it a shot.....
Story sounds awful familiar! lol Have had mine since dating wife also..short version! Drove to chat tenn to get married in it and ended up with leak in radiator so we had to stop every hour or so to put water in it! lol 16yrs ago
Detailed the seats, interior, shampooed the carpets..........looking much better.
Looking good :).
Headliner is sagging, console lid needs paint, dash has a inch split, and sun visors need to be recovered..........thats about it for the interior.
Come over and do mine next!!!!....lol. Looking good!!
It's amazing what a little cleaning can do.
Would have been easier to fix when the seats were out. :hick:
I know, but my time and funds are very limited right now, so I'm just doing what i can for some instant gratification.....

I like how the back seat looks like individual bucket seats.
I like that too....the 85/86 console was shorter and had a 3rd center rear belt, so they became 5 passenger cars.
anyway to make the rear buckets work in say a 87 up car?
Im not 100% sure but the rear seats should bolt right in on 87/88 cars, or with very light modding......
My 86' T/C has the full length console with a center-fold down console in the back seat. I don't remeber it having a center seat belt.
I remember seeing some consoles that were shorter in the back, and didn't impede legroom for a 3rd person. Maybe I'm mistaken and its 87/88 cars or perhaps Cougars. I know there are 2 console versions though......
Might've been Base models or Sports?? And it was a arm rest not a console in the back........ my bad lol
This is a 87 interior, notice the extra belt in the back seat center......
Looking good. I have done a few headliners and the hardest part is getting them out and back in. Materials are cheap for the most part. Just s all the old foam from the backer, spray some hi temp adhesive on half, lay the new material down on that half, and repeat. Trim the edges, mark and trim the holes and reinstall.
That's cool. Where do you get all these vintage pics?????
Im a master picture hunter......lol. I have become very adept at searching for stuff and copying images. There is stuff all over if you know where to look.
Teach Me Oh Wise One
You may call me zen photo master.......grasshopper.....
Google search on
old car brochures and you'll be amazed what you can find. :D
Playing with wheel choices tonight.....any thoughts?

Cobra R's makes it look like it belongs on the street. The American Racing Vintage makes it look like it belongs on an oval. The car doesn't know where it belongs with the last set, but I am not a huge fan of aftermarket looking rims.
I like the Cobra Rs. I have a set for mine that I'll be putting on once I get tires for them. I also like the Saleen wheels, they are a type of star wheel, that's what I was going to get for mine until I got a deal on the Cobras that I couldn't pass up.
The Ansen's give it the look of the period, which isn't often seen.
I like the Ansen's too...i thought the exact same thing!
Chooglins wheel choice of the wed rodlites give it that retro look with a modern spin. Take a look into them if you'd like
I like the Ansen's too, The Cobra R's look real nice, but you see them a lot on these cars.
I thought these older Thunderbird Metric rims might look really cool and different too.....

Way different! Haven't seen them before. TRX size rim?
390MM same bolt and offset as well.
The tires are big $$$!
I have a new set i stole for $250 bucks....Jerry was kind enough to help me out with shipping......
I may be the only one but I always liked the look of the TRX's you have on your car.
I like how the stock TRX wheels look also. It's just too bad about tires.
Well than that makes three of us doesn't it? LOL
The Thunderbird specific TRX wheels are unique in and of themselves. They are the true retro look! The bonus of the getting a set of tires for only $250 makes it seem like a no brainer to use the OEM pieces.
One of my favorite mods was the member who put the TRX wheel centers in larger rims with a standard tire size.
I have always liked the style and they're a great feature on stock vehicle.
...
If it were me and I wanted a retro look.........10 holes with T-bird center caps.
i dig the 10 holes, i just want less common wheels, but vintage and correct.
New photo shoot tonight.....car is roadworthy, and i took her on the highway tonight.
