Excellent chase sequence, with even better editing. I like how the Charger completely misses the gas station at the end. Does anyone have an accurate count on how many hub caps the Charger looses?
That movie cemented my affection for the Mustang.
Actually if you look at it they passes the same VW 3 times.
There's also a white '67 mustang they pass 2 or 3 times...it's always sitting on the side of street, except for the first shot, it was almost broadside in an intersection.
Still, for an older film with none of today's effects, it was pretty kick-ass
The part i love the most is when the driver buckles up. Then makes a left turn with the R/T AND ROASTS THE TIRES. Bad A$$ MOVIE
I didn't know if it's me, but the Stang does one wheel peels....lol
Yes no POSI. I noticed it also. I am thinking they did that on purpose. The R/T came stock with posi i think. Either way its a classic car chase for the books
Also the fast back had loads of wheel hop.
I have read many stories on that chase scene and the cars over the years. The Dodge outpowered the Ford easily in reality. I couldn't care less. I also noticed the hub caps, and other little things, but, best chase ever. I've watched it more times than I can remember. I break out the DVD every once in a while and just watch the chase. On the big TV, it's awesome.
I read somewhere that the charger loses 6 wheel covers.
The Charger's collision with the camera was not scripted.
The scene showing the dark green VW was part of 8 camera positions on the same location.
My Bullitt Shrine
Steve McQueen was The Man.
The chase starts on chapter #14 on my Bullitt DVD.
Very NICE Hypostang Very Nice. I still love that CHASE > its CLASSIC AND AW-SUM. And with 2 great cars. Rumor has it that Steve set up the mustang and actually drove it for the cameras. No professional stunt driver. But we all know Steve was a race car driver
They also stated that McQueen also put the dents in it prior to shooting to make the car more "real" as a cops daily driver.
No
If you look closely, you can see where they mounted the close up cameras on the Mustang, Charger, the 1967 Custom Police car and taxi cab.
Before shooting, He (McQueen) said the Stang looked too nice for a cops salary, and he did some minor tweaking by giving it some character marks. They also removed all Mustang and Ford lettering and badges from it due to licensing issues with Ford. The owner of the car now, who's had it for years, will not allow anyone to see it, and he won't do interviews. The Dodge had the 440 in it, the Stang had a 390. They had to beef up the Stang somewhat to take the jumps down the streets. The Dodge was fine. If you'll notice, the Dodge takes the jumps and doesn't bottom out. R/T suspension !!! They also did a little work to the 390 due to being out-powered by the 440. The Charger was hooked to the Stang with a release mechanism in the end of the chase sequence. The Charger was supposed to plow into the fuel tanks, but actually missed. You can see the Charger passing the tanks when they explode. Something you wouldn't really notice without looking and knowing what to look for. Still the best chase scene ever. Steve McQueen did his own driving, and the guy in the Charger (can't remember his name) also did his own driving. I'm off work today and tomorrow.....Hmmmm............Yes, time to break out the DVD.
According to my special features on my DVD it says that he only did some of the driving not all of it ... but that doesn't make it any less cool
That is true. Can't have a big movie star get dead in the middle of shooting the flick. Makes it hard to finish the movie.
Bill Hickman drove the Charger.
