Title: ford nos keyless remote system for 88-93 mustang on craigslist
Post by: blain_gatterdam on August 17, 2011, 03:43:35 AM
I know I asked before what my oem options were, seems I havent seen anything pop up like this. it would mainly just be for the remote seeing as I already have keyless on the bird as is. what do you guys think compatability wise?

Basically it is aftermarket, defiantly not the same electronics as factory installed...

Install on a T-Bird/Coug with a keypad will be different than the instructions for the Stang(that never had such)... The relays are inside the keyless module, not external as the Stangs and non-keyless Birds...

AFAIC nothing beats the factory remotes, I installed a '98 Taurus remote module in my Bird, been in place for nine years no issues... No mine doesn't have the keypad so wasn't hard to install and I just wanted the remote... I don't suggest one try it if they are electrically challenged though...

Fair enough, I dont mind using the keypad to get in I just thought it would integrate a little easier.

How hard would it be to integrate a remote with the factory keypad?

I made it sound harder with the factory keyless than it really is... Using a module from a Escort(which is same as Taurus and many other carlines), all that has to be done is connect approx 6-8 wires and you're golden... The Escort is preferred as the wiring harness is much simpler than the Taurus(found this out after my install)... You'll continue to use your original keypad and module as before...

On my install, I mounted the Keyless module on the heater plenum with RTV and connected all the wires in that same area... I tapped into the connections from the door switches for the lock/unlock in the kick panel, connected the trunk pop to the switch in the dash, and connected to the horn relay which is just above the glove box opening... I powered the module from the always hot side of the fuel door release... Only other connection that has to be made is a switched power source(hot side of trunk switch), so it can be put into programming mode to add remotes... There are two wires(maybe more, I can't remember for sure) shown in the diagram that connect to switched power, one of those disables the remote system when the iginition is on, I didn't connect that one... Since they have a keypad, that may well be a feature on the Taurus that's not on the Escort... Also I never tried to make a connection to activate the interior lights, likely could be done but the Taurus used a buss line connection to a lighting module, guessing the Escort circuit is somewhat more simple... The module to get is from a '99-'00 or so Escort, other than the Taurus most '98-earlier models use a different remote... The remotes for the module I reccomend still function with most models on up to present... I recently gave the wife's sister a spare '98 Taurus remote I had for her '07 Mariner, works fine...

This Escort module has same as part number as the one from the Taurus I used...

Hey Tom.  That sounds like a mod I'd like to do.  Where is the remote module found on Escorts?  If you want a free module and remote, let me know.  I know where to find quite a few '99 and '00 Escorts.  Thanks!

I believe it's under the back seat... Somewhere around here I have a pict(apparently not on my web space though)...

I appreciate the offer, but I have a spare module if mine ever quits... I'd recommend grabbing all the remotes you could find though, other than the ones for '96-'05 Crown Vic, Marauder and Grand Marquis(these are dark grey), almost all interchange...

I found a '99 Taurus in the boneyard today and found the keyless entry module in it.  It's located behind the fuse box on those cars.  I'm gonna see if I can track down wiring info on this thing, so I can wire it in.  Another bit of good news on this front is I found a guy who's selling a brand new black Ford key FOB for $10 close to me.  After reading what you said about black key FOBs, I'm hoping the FOB the guy has will work with this module.  We'll see!  Thanks again for your help Tom.

Ok.  Here's the pinout for a '99 Taurus keyless module.  These cars are REALLY easy to find at boneyards, so anyone who wants to install one, should be able to easily find one.

I've been kicking around different ideas on how I want to do this and am leaning heavily towards mounting this keyless entry module in my trunk next to the original keyless entry module.  I could then easily tap in to the lock and unlock wires for the doors.  The trunk release solenoid is at the trunk latch, so it would be a breeze to tie into it too.  I'm not going to forget where I park the car, so I don't have a use for the horn option.  This just seems like a great way for me to do it.

In the next couple of days I'll try to see just what is hooked up on mine, wire color should be same as the chart posted... Some how I am thinking there are two plugs???

If I managed to crawl into the trunk on mine, would be the last you'd hear from me...

I was inspired by this thread and decided to spend my Thanksgiving weekend installing a Ford keyless entry into my 88 XR7.  I harvested the RAP (Retained Accessory Power) module from a 99 Escort as recommended.  It's located in the trunk behind the passenger rear panel on both the 2 and 4 door Escorts.  I downloaded the Escort wiring diagram from Mitchell's to obtain the pin-outs.  My only problem was locating the Cougar's door lock/unlock relays.  My XR7 does not have keyless entry so I was looking for the twin lock relays.  My research indicated the relays should be under the passenger seat or under the rear parcel shelf in the trunk.  Nothing in both areas.  So I had to listen for the "click" of the relays and finally found them above the brake pedal!

Installation was straight forward per TurboCoupe50's instructions.  If you want to include the trunk release and parking lights you must use a five-wire relay for each (available at autozone, NAPA, etc) to convert the negative pulse of the RAP into a 12v signal.

I have an extra RAP and two FOBs programmed that I will put up for sale in the classified section if anybody wants.  Expect to spend the weekend on this project but very rewarding once completed.

Almost forgot...wiring the interior lights was very easy.  I wanted the lights to activate with the unlock feature so I ran a wire from the unlock pin of the RAP to the Illumination Entry Timer located behind the rear seat (white/lt blue wire) or Pin #11 of the keyless entry module, also white/lt blue.  The activation of the interior lights requires  a negative pulse so a direct wire was the only thing required.

That is very cool.  Wiring diagrams are not my strong suit.  What is the minimum connections to do door locks and trunk only?

Here are the minimum connections to the donor keyless module for door locks only:

Ground
Battery +
Ignition
Lock wire from relay  (or keyless entry module if you have the buttons above the door handle)
Unlock wire from relay (or keyless entry module if you have the buttons above the door handle)

For the trunk release you must obtain a five-pin relay from any auto store to convert the negative signal from the donor keyless module to 12v +.  Very easy, just follow the wiring diagram below and connect the lead from pin #30 to the trunk release switch. Pin #86 connects to the donor keyless module. The other pin connections are self explanatory.

Is the trunk switch the button I push in the glovebox to "pop" the trunk?  Or does it have to be back in the trunk?

You can run the wire for the trunk release to either the "switch" (the button in the glove box) or the solenoid in the rear deck lid.  I spliced my wire to the glove box switch for proximity because I mounted the keyless module to the heater plenum.  See Posts #7 and #13 in this thread for options.

This thread has been a fun read, Tom helped me with this same conversion years ago.  I used a 98+ box but was unable to tie into the dome light as my car does not have illuminated entry.  I did do the trunk relay as you did to make that work.  What I never did do was try and use the extra button on a van remote to do something fun like roll up the windows.

NO.  Does that make it easier or harder?
