I normally do 2-3 gear changes a month in the shop and wanted to pass on some info that i do to insure a good noise free job. When installing carrier bearings its important to seat them all the way. I have seen some units come to the shop installed incorrectly. Some of the bearings were not seated all the way. Here is how to prevent that. Polish the carrier bearing hub with 600 and clean off all the residue after. Smudge a bead of chassis grease around the lower crown area of the carrier. Use a good amount and also smudge some on the inner bearing surface as well. The grease on the lower portion should be a 1/64 inch bead. Then use an old inner race cut with a slot to press on the bearing being sure that the rollers and cage are not compromised. Now with it set up in the press press the new bearing on and do it till the press develops pressure. So you are wondering what the big glob of grease is fore??? Well look at it to see if it squeezes it out thin. If it does the bearing is seated on the carrier. NEVER PRESS A BEARING WITHOUT LUBING IT. Thats a NO NO BIG TIME. I have seen many a carrier with the bearings not seated all the way. Anytime you install a bearing always use RENZOS method. It works every time. Just wanted to pass this on for anyone interested. Note i over packed the grease for the photo. I normally use less so the thin layer gets spread out. This way you can tell if the bearing is properly seated
