Over the years i have made it a point to disect parts to see how they work. The Ford IAC is one. I have found that it can be cleaned but not thoroughly. So what i do is completely break it down and clean it properly. First remove the back plug cap. Its a thin rolled over piece that is easily removed. Then you will see the big brass plug. It has a slot for removal. Sometimes it is very difficult to remove. I normally use a wide blade screwdriver. If it wont come out i heat around the rim with a torch. This usually allows the removal of it most times. I only had a few that would not come apart. In the photo you will see all the components. I chuck the valve portion in an ELECTRIC drill and spin it. Then i polish it with Emery cloth. I then clean the body and install a new O ring with a liberal coat of Dielectric compound on the seal. Presto valve works GREAT. The easiest way to check if a valve is dirty is to blow air through it. The furthest hole away from the plug should not pass air. If it does it is dirty or needs repair. I pay 80 bucks for original valves. So if you can clean one properly its money in your pocket. Hope you like this TIP.

I may experiment with that tip, although I'll need something to re-cap the end. I need it to look right after the clean up. Any tips for re-capping? Maybe a brass freeze plug (it could be easily polished !!!) that would fit snug on the end like a cap? I wonder...................
Geez Vinnie... everything doesn't have to be polished...lol
Actually i leave mine open. It Dazzles the guys at the CAR SHOWS. Some ask about it and others just look and dont know what to SAY. Its funny how different people react when they see it. Some think its adjustable and and some ask me where i bought it. They think its an aftermarket UNIT. I actually dont comment on it and it is the talk of the show. I am passing this stuff on as i grow older. Pop always told me to be open about cars and how we and others find fixes to problems. He lived through the depression with my grandfather that started the business and we rebuilt and fixed EVERYTHING. Their was no such thing as a rebuilt starter or Generator. YOU FIXED IT PERIOD.
Note sometimes its real hard to get the plug out. Sometimes i have to make a slot the entire way and use a piece of flat stock. Sometimes they wont come out. So its a throw of the DICE. Just something to think about. Make sure you have a good replacement handy if its your daily driver. Thanks
Nice work ! "save as"
: )
Pretty cool, thanks for the info.
Of course everything doesn't have to be polished. Just MOST everything......if it's free. LOL.
