Title: melling high volume oil pump in a 5.0
Post by: whitebeastxr7 on May 21, 2005, 02:12:16 PM
I have noticed alot of people from this forum and corral.net have nothing good to say about running a melling high volume oil pump in their 5.0L motors. I had one installed with the Ford Motorsport oil pump driveshaft in my rebuilt 306. Naturally I did the research on this after I already had the motor built and installed in thew car!
Is anyone using this oil pump and having good luck with it?

It could have been that I just had a bad one. Since I still have a 302 though, hindsight tells me a stock volume pump was correct for my engine anyway. For a stroker, a high volume pump is perfectly logical and probably a very smart move anyway.

A high volume pump is harder to turn and eats up hp, most all of the serious racers use a std pump.

When I pulled the pan today on the Blue Bird to check the bottom end, I found it had Melling H/V pump in it(along with a bunch of trash from the destroyed distributor gear). Also found metal in the 1 & 2 main bearings, as well as 1 & 5 rod bearings(thanks Fram for making such a shiznitty filter). Gonna put it back together with new bearings and a std pump(along with a Motorcraft filter).

I've only heard of people blowing the bottoms of the filters off but what if you ran a remote filter setup with two filters.  Would that make it safer to have the high volume pump?

same oil pressure makes it to the filter, mounted on the engine, or remoted mounted, makes no difference

No No, I'm not sure but if the same oil pressure made it to two filters then they would be bearing half the load.  But I dont know.  Does it run the filters in series or parallel

From what I've heard, if you get a good one it'll last forever. The problem with the Melling oil pump is that they don't clean up the rough casting which break off and locks up the oil pump. If you're going to use the Melling, you're better off to open it up and clea up the casting prior to installing it. My brother had a problem with so many Melling oil pumps. If fact his 331 strocker locked up because the oil pump locked up.

Im running a Melling HV oil pump, and have been since my motor has been together for over 4 yrs. I run Mobil 1 synthetic and Motorcraft filter and beat the shiznit out of mine. No probs here.
