Title: Transmission/Converter Noise?
Post by: Denis M on May 24, 2011, 09:15:20 AM
Will a failing torque converter make a humming sound?

My car is making a very resonant sound (like an oboe).  The humming goes away under accelleration but returns when you back off the accellerator and at idle.

I did find fluid down about a quart and brought it up to proper level.

Initially, I looked to intake issues but found no apparent cracks or obvious defects.

The car drives normal and shows no impaired drivability at all.

Any thoughts are greatly appeciated.

I had a rattle one time on a 1995 T-Bird that I swore up and down was the transmission.  Ford checked it out and it turned out to be a small piece of one of the converters came loose and was rattling around in the exhaust.  That was my que to change the exhaust from the headers back on that car and it got rid of the rattle and the car ran much better.
