Title: 89 Mark VII LSC rear end and disk brake conversion.
Post by: jonwayne1988 on May 14, 2011, 06:57:46 PM
OK I have 87 Bird with a 5.0 and it has a 7.5 rear end in it with drum brakes. Well today I when down to the junk yard and found a 89 Mark VII LSC with a 8.8 and disk brakes. My question is has any one put that rear end in there bird. Would this be an easy swap? I would like to have 5 lug, disk brakes, and an 8.8 rear end all at the same time. O and is there a way to tell what gearing the LSC has and what gearing my 7.5 has in it. Thanks

Checkout coolcats.net.  This is a fairly straightforward swap and what I have planned for my 86 5.0.

Direct swap. While you're at the junkyard, find a 88-96 F-150, and make sure it has 3.55 r&p, grab that to throw in your 8.8 Mark 7 rear.

With the discs out back, you'll probably want/need to upgrade your master cylinder and prop valve...search here and coolcats for the pertinent details.

OK sounds good but still does any one know how to tell what gears are in my car and what gears are in the mark VII?

LSC's had 3.27's, and trac-loc was an option.  Look on the door sticker on your car for the axle code and go to the above links to decode.

Jesus christ man, I'm just trying to make sure I get everything the first time. I have read stuff on here and on coolcats. I'm just trying to find any problems I might run in to or any parts to be careful not to miss.

It's all good. No harm done. I just want to have every thing ready to go and get it all done at once. It is my only car I have that I can drive so it can't be down.

You should also grab the E-brake cables. The short section that attaches to the caliper. I had that rear axle in my bird for a while, but with a real worn 2.3L, I couldn't keep it in 5th if I hit a little hill.

OK good to know. I was thinking I was going to need the E-brake cable. I'm going to the junk yard early morning and pulling the rear end.

Ok so I go the complete rearend today. I noticed that the brake lines a in different locations. Is there any info that would let me know what I need to do with the brake lines? I'm planing on swapping this rear end in this weekend. I need to replace to wheel studs on it and while I'm at it I'm going to do a brake job on it as well.
