Title: Tailpipe Options
Post by: mtgmike on May 12, 2011, 11:27:03 AM
I know most people seem to lengthen LX style tails, but I dont think Im going to go that route. They just dont seem to really fit, IMO. I got a great deal on a GT style Ultra Flo system, so that is what is on the car now. I just left it dumped until I got the engine in and running, but now Im starting to button everything up.

I threw the tails on yesterday, just to check the general fit. They are hanging low, but thats because the lers are low. I bolted the hanger to the lers, so I can move those up, and I think things will be fine. But the tails seem to be too far towards the middle of the car, just outside the framerails, not close to the  body like I want to remember they were on my Mustangs.

I was considering cutting them just behind the rear end, and have them coming down and out just behind the wheels. Thinking cutting them short enough that you cant even really see them unless you kneel down beside the car. That way, I could put hangers on the framerail just over and behind the rear, and not have to mess with the gas tank tube on the pass. side.

Thoughts?

Hey, if there are cheap polished long tails available, and someone has a pic of how their hangers were done, maybe I will go that route. I just hate seeing a "tip". I had a Thrush CVX cat back on my 89 that sounded great, but the tips were welded on, and you could see them just behind the tire. It had a 85 Chevy truck feel, you know?

Scroll down to the bottom of the page for tailpipes-I personally hate when mustang tail pipes are extended to fit-they look like total . A good ler shop should be able to make you a nice 1 piece tailpipe. I've done this numerous times to different T-Birds and you don't have to touch the gas tank tube.

Custom made 2 1/4". Factory location. Tips (turndowns) are not visible standing behind car. A tad shorter than I wanted them, as I wanted to see the tips.

Mine were extended and they can't even be seen. They are really high so the tips could exit in the bumper cover.

I'm dumped before the rear axel :hick: Sounds good though! If I were a V8 I'd still do pretty much the same thing to it (and someday will).

Ohh, lord no. This thing sounds like it should run 10's dumped. Cars should sound slower than they are IMO. Its much better with tails.

I don't race or want to so I don't really care about that. I just enjoy my car and forget about everyone else.

I have the original stinger mock up tails that were test fitted on my TC for the production tail pipes for our cars :)

btw make sure if you use the stinger tails that you use offset/offset lers

Had them finished up today. He was able to get them high enough that I just left the GT tails alone. Ill clean it up later on, but they are high enough that they are hard to see. Also got it aligned. Starting to make real progress.
