With the Cougar coming together and the plans in place to put the Mustang DEEP into the low 11's I have a lot on my plate car wise. By this time next year I'll be done though.
Next: 79-81 4 eye Mustang........
I have my eye on one. Manual EVERYTHING. Racing seats already swapped in. Some surface rust on the trunk and passenger door, but other than that - clean. The goal with this car is really not what it'll look like. It's brown and faded. I actually want to keep it that way.
The plan:
351 based motor, fuel injection, single turbo (76 or 88 mm), auto trans (can't decide between a C-6 w/ a Gear Vendor O/D or just build up an AOD), 4.10's(perhaps 4.30's), 28 inch tall tire, cage, subframes, battle boxes.....you get the picture.
I have 2 inquiries....
1. I want THE QUIETEST EXHAUST POSSIBLE. Stock quiet if I can manage it. Any input on a good flowing and Quiet ler from those with firsthand accounts would be welcome.
2. The steering wheel and column are direct swap overs from Fairmonts and box Catbirds, correct?
for quiet exhaust, I would go with magnaflow. very quiet at idle and crusing, but they get the job done!!

Don't get Pypes Violators if you want quiet...mine are loud ALL the time. Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't some of the offerings from Flowmaster fairly quiet?
The exhaust powering the turbo will quiet is some, right? I think it is a compromise between flow and sound.
Here you go Paul-right in NY

I'll put a third vote in for magnaflow cause thats what I've got on my Ranger which I wanted to stay quiet. Its not so much the brand as the style and size that matter though.
Get the LARGEST case you can possibly fit under the car. The ler on my Ranger is 3" straight thru w/a 22" long case. Dead silent even at full spool and load.
This is what I like to hear.
More turns in the exhaust = quieter. You need a tailpipe for sure. I just use cheapo Summit s and the TR7 was too quiet. I went from an 18" resonator and a ler to just a resonator. I'm using the ler on the 'bird.
Of course a turbo is a ler in itself.
OOOOOOOOhhhhh. I am really diggin that car. Perfect for your plan-OUTSTANDING!!!!
Oh I like this!
I had an '84 GT new off the showroom floor. Black with a red interior. I loved that car. Wish I had it back.
How about stock S197 Mustang s? They probably flow well for stockers and if you did an off road H or X pipe, it would not be overly loud but would have a nice sound.
Your cam will also make a good bit of difference in sound, maybe go with a custom cam? <--- Maybe sounds dumb but might be worth thinking about.
Oh, I didnt see pics the first time. I had an 84 hatch that same color. My friend and I painted a white stripe over the hood/roof/hatch, and he called it the skunk turd!
Ha, just checked the top of my tool box and found these :mullet:
I'm actually looking for quiet myself.... I like the mgnaflow sound... not very harsh...Is that a 3 chamber ler?
My magnaflows aren't that quiet.
mine is just the short 3" cans, with summit racing 3" x-pipe and 1-3/4 hooker long tubes
I always wondered if you could take a straight through ler like Thrush Glasspacks and run them in series...
Custom cam is a given. When the time comes, Ed Curtis will get another order (he did the cam in the Cougar).
Absolutely. But it would only quiet it to the lowest threshold of that ler. Lets say, for example, that its designed to hit a target decibal range of < 75db... well putting just one on with no cats you're probably not going to hit that, but put two on or a resonator and you'll get a whole lot closer, probably even make it. Certainly with three you'll hit that number but you'll never get quieter than that no matter how many you put on cause they're just designed to let a certain amount of sound through and they will keep doing so.
At least that's how I understand it....
Sweet. I read somewhere on the net about a dude that does custom grinds, can't remember the name for the life of me, think his first or last name is Allen though, I'll see if I can find it again, from what I read seemed like he knew what he was doing...may be worth looking into anyway.
If your talking about Jay Allen, I think he went nuts.
Yep. That was the name. Went nuts? I didn't really read a whole lot about the guy, just read that he made custom cams for a few people.
I read he got caught ripping people off and disappeared :dunno: ... I have heard great things about Ed Curtis though.
As far as original topic , I love notch back Fox Stangs , I had a brand new 86 5.0
I'm unsure as to what exactly happened to him, but suffice to say he is on hiatus.
Just an update. Trying to get the wheels going on a deal for the car. Unfortunately the guy needs it gone yesterday and I don't have any extra cash until a month from now =(
I don't dip into savings for this stuff......
Anyway -- I read some stuff concerning Jay Allen.....
Quite disturbing to say the least.....
Wish me luck with that particular car because it'll be hard to find another in that condition......
Oh yeah, almost forgot. The Cougar gets the paint laid down within the next 2 weeks and we can start putting it back together and I can finally add all the other supporting parts for it as well.
Can't wait!!
