Ok, so I got some insulation but now I don't know how to install it. I can't figure out how to put it in. The piece that I am having problems with is the one under the steering column. If someone could just take a picture of how it is in the car (you don't need to take it out, I just need to see it in place) that would be awesome. Thanksssssss:D
Easy stuff. The side that goes down is the center dash side. There are two holes for bolts to go through. They go to the bolts that hold the column up. The column bolts (actually the nuts) hold the cover on, and there's one torx screw that goes to the left of those. I can't get a pic right now, I'll try soon.
sorry Vince but I can't wrap my head around it. I've got this big brace holding my dash in place and it seems to get in the way no matter what I do. I think what i reall just need to know, is which way its facing. I'm thinking it goes all the way over the fuse box and bolts to the lower set of column bolts... correct? That is the only logical place I can figure out how to put it but it still doesn't seem to fit.....
It doesn't cover the fuse box. There should be a piece that angles down. That is a filler for the back of the center of the dash, behind the center stack. Up front on the little panel, is a "forked" piece that sticks out. That goes between the center panel under the column and the dash on the right side.
Post a pic of the panel. I can't get pics right now. Then, I can show you left, right, front, and back of the panel.
THis is what I'm trying to do to get it to fit. THis would be looking at it from the top down with the top of the pic being the front of the car

Yours is different than mine. The opening at the top of the pic should fit around the pedals (brake and clutch). The round hole goes to one of the nuts holding the column up, and the slot should be for a screw to fit in over on the left side behind the fuse block. If we don't get this resolved tonight, I'll pull mine in the morning and snap a pic of it with the proper areas marked for installation.
Can I see the other side of it?
you mean.... this other side of it?:D

O.K., the two round holes and a slotted hole. The two round holes fit on two of the studs sticking down that hold the column up. There should be nuts holding the brackets in place that hold the column, then two nuts to hold the cover up (doubled up). The cover is sandwiched between the fasteners. The big square cutout at the bottom goes around the brake and clutch pedal. If it were from an AOD car, there would only be a slot for the brake pedal to move through. Mine was from an auto equipped car, and I cut it for the 5 speed (there were notches to cut it out). The big square opening goes towards the firewall....the "rounded" part goes under the column. There's a bar that goes from the bottom of the dash to the column support on the right side. Where the bar meets the support is where the hole on the right (in the pic) goes. The other hole should line up to it's correct place to be on the left column support. THEN, the slotted hole should have a place to put a screw on the left side. There should be a little clip that a screw goes into unless someone removed it.
Good talking to you. I'm still wondering if that support bar is on backwards. You may want to remove it completely and do some test fitting.
ok, here's the pics. Sorry I had a delay after I talked to you on the phone.
This is what the bracket is doing. I don't think there's anything wrong with it.

And here is the way the panel ended up sitting after everything was said and done. I think something is way off here. Just doesn't seem right at all.

Thinking I might have to get another panel. Something just not right. Plus its not big enough to cover the sides of the dash....
That doesnt look anything like the panel that was in my bird .
That looks like it may have come from a Mark 7
ummm... well that makes sense I guess... hmmmm.....
Yep, need a different panel after looking at the "installed" pics. I'll get a pic of how it should look in the morning for you. BIG difference.
could this piece have come from an 83/84 and that's why its different?
Insulation.................... why do you need that under there? Just toss it and forget about it. LOL
These cars are well insulated already...compared to Stangs.
well I just call it insulation cause its got some on it... for me its much more for the trim value. I need something under there to cover up all that nasty mess of wires up there. Plus it just looks better in general.
btw, anyone got one of the correct panels?
managed to get out to the JY today and found the correct piece. All is well now.

You can ignore all the protruding wires. Those are now tucked safely away.:D
Oh hey btw does anyone know if the fuse panels ever had cover plates? Its so odd just seeing the whole panel all exposed like that all the time...
Much better !!! Nicely done.
