anybody know if there were any weird 5.0 changes from 88 to 90? im using my 88 block and rebuilding it with the HO pistons, and while it's apart, i can also throw in the crank/rods from the HO if there better.
also, i dont know if they were undercut from factory for any kinda dumb reason like some of AMC's stuff was. bearings are like 25$ so its no big deal, just id like to do it once lol...
No weird changes
Ho stuff have forged internals check the crank resize the rods if necasary. Are you gonna have the block worked on ?
If I remember right, the internals of an S.O engine are the same as the H.O except for the pistons and cam and double roller timing chain. More on the outside of the engine, like the heads, upper intake, t-body,and headers.
SOs had double chains too, as long as they were roller. HO's have E7 heads and SO's had E5s or E6s. The HO's also had larger TBs and upper intakes.
Internally the HO had forged pistons with valve releafs and a little dish, the SO had cast pistons with no releafs or dish.
Both of the '87 SO 5.0 I dissembled had std chain, the '88 did have roller... I don't think you'll find a E5 head on any SEFI SO, but you may find them on a early '87 HO...
I never found a double roller on a factory built 5.0. Maybe a replacement chain was a double roller (on the SO engines).
I don't remember mine having a dbl when it came apart
My 88 had a double chain stock. I know that it had never been changed cause my car has been in the family since it was new. I have a complete repair history on the car. Maybe my car was just a fluck but it's not the first SO motor that I've torn into that had a double chain.
