Title: Car was fine then nothing.
Post by: Dansbirds on March 19, 2011, 10:51:11 AM
Drove into town this am and all was fine. Came out after a job and nothing, no solenoid click, no fuel pump, no nothing. I let out a few choice words about the car and then called for a ride. While waiting I started thinking of things to consider and felt up under the dash and tugged a bit on the wiring harness at the column. Well tried to start it and fuel pump engaged but no start, felt around somemore and tried again and started right up. Drove home apologizing for all the bad names I called the car, put it back in the garage and shut it off. Car started right back up. I am leaning towards the ignition switch as problem but never have had one go bad so if any of you have what were the symptoms? Thanks for any input. Car is a 86 XR7

Sure sounds like the ignition switch to me.:D  Better replace it before you have a fire.

Take the column trim stuff off and have a look at the ignition switch. If it looks like it is separating around the edges than more than likely it is bad. If it is, replace ASAP, or like said above there's a good chance of a fire.

agreed,, cheap part to replace.

I used tiny vice grips to get the security torx screws out, the lower one was harder.

once the screws were out, i put them in the vice and cut them so they are now flat head screws.

And leave it out of the garage until you fix it.

Is the wheel loose? Nows the time to tighten it up.
