Title: '84 Cougar aka my money pit
Post by: cougrrr302 on March 18, 2011, 07:35:47 PM
I have been gone for quite some time poking my head in every now and then. I finally have been getting somewhere with the Cougar. I've been in the process of converting to 5 lug. I have new rear axles from Anthony going in my 3.73 Trac-Lok rear end I got from Graham. I've got a set of Headers from Herb that I'm having sand blasted and I will be painting and wrapping them. I just bought a set of 4 lug Cobra R's to put on it for now. I couldn't pass up the deal. I've got exhaust tips, an X-pipe and a Mach 1 Air Dam on its way. My Turbo Coupe hood is being painted. I've been searching for front hubs/spindles to finish the 5 lug swap. I located a Mark VII, but am trying to get a Cobra setup including 4 wheel disc brakes. As of lately I've been accumulating alot of parts for it I'll have some pics of the wheels up tonight. And parts when they arrive. Just need front tires and I'll have the wheels on and get exhaust put on it.

Nice. Progress is a good thing. Pics should be posted of the new wheels as well. Keep it up, stay in touch more often, and good luck.

Hood is being painted, center cap decals are being made, and all of my exhaust parts should be coming soon.

What are the center cap decals going to have on them? I still have the custom center caps I made myself. I didn't need them for these wheels, but after I got rid of my Cobra R wheels, I couldn't part with them. Nice wheels you have there. I remember when I ran that kind on the Sport. They looked great. What exhaust parts are you expecting? This sounds like you're making up for lost time.

I'm making up for 4 years worth of "putting off" the build. The center caps will have a silver Cougar emblem. I honestly wasn't going to buy wheels until I finished the 5 lug conversion, but these wheels cost me less than the two tires I will have to buy haha. Could'nt pass that up. Plus it gives me more time to plan out my 5 lug and actually enjoy the look these wheels give the car.

Parts I'm expecting are:
UPR O/R X-pipe
Exhaust tips(3 1/2" Rolled Edge)
Header Gaskets
New Header Bolts
Header Wrap and Straps
I just need to pick up some 2 1/2" to 2 1/4" reducers so that my Magnapacks will fit to the X-pipe and Tailpipes. All of the piping is 2 1/2" but the Magnapacks have a 2 1/4" Inlet/Outlet.

I need to sandblast and paint my headers, wrap them and exhaust will be on and done. I'm going to remove all of the smog system when I put on the headers. Get my wheels on and my Turbo Coupe hood.

After that it's ready for the show I'm prepping it for. Gonna shop around for some Valve covers.

Next things on the list are a Mini Starter, and the 5 lug swap. Then starting the saving for my motor build.

Header wrap, ties, gaskets and exhaust tips came in 2 days ago. They sent me the wrong tips. I ordered 18" without a logo, and Summit sent me 12" with stamped logo. I didn't want a tip saying "Cherry Bomb", I have Magnaflow tips on the way. Pics will be up tomorrow.

In the process of buying some 94-95 Spindles/Hubs and Mach 1 springs. Things are looking pretty good. Gonna check up on center caps tomorrow and I need to get the paint matched for the hood.

Here's a pic of the tips:

I got off work late but will have pics up in the morning of my parts pile(which is growing)

BBK Offroad X-Pipe and Magnaflow Exhaust Tips came in from Summit today.

Pics of parts to be installed:

Headers are ready for blasting, car comes out of storage tomorrow. Ordering tires, and a Mach 1 Air Dam.
Hopefully next week I'll have exhaust on, Cobra R's on and hood being painted, and the air dam installed.

Found a set of 94/95 spindles for $100 and a brand new set of Mach 1 springs also for $100. Should I snag them? I won't need them for awhile.

Spend the 200 on those spindles and springs, or regret it forever. lol

Rear tires: 255/50/17
Front tires: 245/45/17

My Dad and I swapped his front tires for my rears so he would have a raked look to his Chevelle. Put my Center Caps on today, so no pics of the whole car with them. Mach 1 Air Dam on its way, TC hood goes on Wednesday and Exhaust next week!!!!

Thanks guys!!!! I have waited so long, I'm so proud of this car! I absolutely love driving it!!
Center caps have a black vinyl overlay, then the silver Cougar logo. I had them done by a local Vinyl Graphics business. He sized them perfectly! I just have to come up with a way to secure two of them to the wheels, the plastic tabs won't hook in, and they keep falling out.

UPDATE: Car is in the shop, hood was scanned by Sikkens to be paint matched. Hood will be on Thursday, and my Mach 1 Chin Spoiler should be here by then. Headers will be blasted by Friday. Just gotta make an appointment for ler, tails and tips to be mounted.

Update: Pulled the driverside manifold off without any problems, the downpipe gave me issues. My header bolts are too short, and neither my equal length shorties or my mustang shorties fit, both hit the bellhousing with the coupler....I have no idea what to do, nothing on this car is fitting right motorwise. The body pinch weld seam folded over after letting it off the jack, a wrench somehow flew threw the air and chipped the paint on the driver door, it needs a serious wash, and I can't even drive it, or start it. I am at my wits end with this car. Nothing works right, I have issue after issue. The hood has to be repainted also when I looked it over there was trash in the paint and it looks awful, also I got bent over the table for materials from a place I used to work. $450 to paint the hood with no labor charges???? Exhaust is probably not gonna happen, so Im probably gonna have to just skip the car show next month or trailer it there.

bring it down here on a weekend or something and we will get it straightened out, dont give up there has to be a way to make those headers work.

If I have time I can make them work by denting one tube and using a die-grinder on the bell housing. Time is the problem. I have a month to get this done, but I work non-stop and when I'm not at work I'm at home with my kids. I really don't want to pay anyone to install them. If I could get a day to do it, I should be able to. I also need to go car shopping. I gotta find me a Cruze to trade my Jeep for.

I know if I just keep a level head I'll get it. Lately this car has really got to me. We've had wicked storms come through the past week, and the car is in the driveway with a header loosely bolted on the drivers side. Makes me sad to just see it sit there. I need to find a seperate storage unit from the Chevelle and get it in there. I should have the driverside exhaust done Friday, I'll have some help with it.

Update: Good news. I got both Mustang shorties on, and the BBK X on. I busted the smog line that is bolted to the heads, so I took it off and hammered the tube flat and rolled it, I'm gonna throw some JB Weld on it and hope it hold, its a tiny pipe that will leak, but hopefully not warp valves with the little pressure I would assume it gets. Tomorrow morning it goes in to get the rest of the exhaust on. Then some engine bay cleaning, a good wash, wax and getting the center caps fixed and she's good for Sunday. I bought a new Digital Camera, so I'll post up some pics tomorrow and after the car show. I'm hoping it sounds like I want, crossing fingers. After some beers, cursing and bloody hands I've got it back on track.

Can't wait to see the pics. If you're talking about the smog tube that goes from one head to the other, I have a mint one in the garage that's yours for shipping. Glad to see you've made some serious progress. I can't seem to find time to bolt on my friggin' motor mounts. Maybe this weekend. What lers and tails are you using? what size exhaust are you going with?

I didn't get pics uploaded yet, my new laptop has been iffy lately, so I'm gonna upload my pics to my desktop tomorrow morning. It's a full 2.5" setup. BBK O/R X-Pipe, Magnaflow Magnapacks, Mustang GT Tails(Stainless) and some 3.5" Magnaflow Rolled Edge tips. It may be the Magnapacks, but any Mustang whether it's a 5.0 or a 4.6 is so loud with Magnapacks on it. Mine is quiet until WOT. I love the deep tone to it, but without cats it's almost too quiet for me.

Vinnie I might have to snag that tube from you. I want to get rid of the smog stuff completely, I just don't know what wiring harnesses I can and can't take out. I lost the write-up I had saved.

Took some pics after a quick wash, even made a quick exhaust video(white smoke is from seafoam). I left the video unedited. You will see why at the end....stupid people.

Pics might be big, my new camera is pretty sweet.

I think 3 1/2" might be too big, but I like them everytime I look at the car. It'll sound better once I get the dead spot fixed.

Youtube took FOREVER to load this.

Thanks guys!!!!  I really need a fan clutch, it gets so annoying with the fan spinning so fast. Tomorrow I'll be checking injectors, and I need to start shopping for an ignition coil, distributor, plug wires, and a decent brand of plugs. I might be looking at heads, cam and intake also to swap over to carb. All suggestions are welcome.

Some creeper sent it to me in the mail haha. I'm proudly showing that off tomorrow in the car show. I'll post up pics tomorrow night or Monday of the show. It's the Cougar's first show, so I'm hoping it goes well.
