Ok, had no luck when I tried to sell this thing so let me hear or see what others of you have done.
Its a 86 XR7 and I will be putting a later t/c style hood on it with the scoops, once I paint it. I had thought of maybe painting the scoops black to match the rest of the trim and possibly making the grille black as well but I am just not sure how it will look. Also, I am getting some block off plates(thanks Vinnie) for the scoops and am also curious what you guys are using for a hood pad if you dont have functioning scoops? will a regular one work? Thanks in advance for any and all input. Heres a pic of the frt end as it sits now.
Its still a turbo car, right? Is so, why not get the TC intercooler and get some added performance to go with the looks?
I think the car looks great as is. I could see painting the hood scoop inserts to match the headlight buckets, but not the grill. Just my opinion.
IMO, if you're not going to intercool it, leave the slick hood look.
I'm not a fan of the 87-88TC hoods, and besides, you see them on everything.
I agree with Chuck. I hate scoops that don't do anything. I have the TC hood and hate it. It was the only decent hood I could find, and it was $35.00. When I repaint the car, it's gone. No cowl induction hood either. I'm going independent and modding a flat hood to meet my needs. Also, black painted hood scoops on these hoods look wrong to me. It looks like you took scoops from a black hood and bolted them on. Like a black door on a silver car so to speak.
I think that car looks great as is. I agree, if not intercooling it with different hood, just leave it alone.
Alright, now you all have me thinking. What would be needed as far as adding the intercooler ? I have the hood and the plastic pieces attatched to it but obviously nothing from the engine side.
I just added a TC hood and intercooler to my 86. It is fairly straight forward. You should just need the intercooler, support bracket, and the ducting that is attached to the bottom of the hood. I also opted to buy an SVO compressor housing because they had a T3 (like the XR7s) but used a top mount IC so it doesn't have the two bolt outlet. It is not necessary to buy one, but if you don't you will either have to have to grind the ears off the outlet (to make it round) or cut off the tube that leads to the throttle body, leaving about an inch for the IC hose to slide onto. You will also need to clock the compressor housing so the outlet is facing up instead of pointing towards the TB. This may cause some issues with the wastegate rod, but I'm nto sure since I took the easy way out. I took pics of the process so let me know if you have any questions about it.
