I'm pretty sure this has been addressed at some point but I can't find it. I'd like a factory-appearing tach that functions/reads correctly to 8K. Will any of the TC tachs go that high? If not, is there a way to modify them so one will? If not, any suggestions on one available in the aftermarket that can substitute?
Anybody?
I have no idea. I'd check Ebay and look at all that's available. If you find one that will fit the size and needs for a tach, a face can always be made for it to match up.Black face should be easy though.
Yeah, it may be necessary to go aftermarket. I was hoping to stick w/ the factory piece if possible, but don't know how high it will go.
I saw a few from the early 70's, late 60's that go to 8,000. I really don't think it would be hard to integrate it into an buttstuffog gauge cluster and run new wires to it. I have a couple of extra clusters (no speedos) that you can practice on.
Taurus SHO's had 8K tachs, you could probably get creative adapting one of those.
If you are able to make a new "face", it is also possible to swap the electronic part. I think it can't be difficult. One microcontroller, bunch of few other parts and that's all. I think it should cost $10 max (electronics, not the face).
I had someone make me one that goes to 7000. Here's the thread

I didn't see a stepper motor inside the tach, so I'm guessing there's no limit to how far the needle can travel provided it gets a signal. Anyone know if that's correct?
kendoo,
Thanks for the link. I had even posted in that thread. Too much water under the bridge for me, can't remember enough.
Trinom,
With info gathered from coolcats and some other threads, it looks like the solution is to follow your suggestion.
