Time to start this thing up! What does everyone's schedules look like?
http://home.comcast.net/~vbrunamonti/cscc/2002_solo.htm
We had our first event today. No points, fun run. The car is still apart, but I have been suffering a horrible case of spring fever this year, and been itchin to get out and run. I was very pleased that the weather held out today, and I was able to run the truck.(http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c73/gmby23/93%20ranger/a44106be.jpg)
Got some good runs, brushed off some cobwebs, and had a ton of fun. The ol' Ranger put a hurtin on a few civics, and I was told I lifted the right front tire on a couple runs. I woulda paid for a pic of that, but I didnt see any cameras out today.
I will post the results once they are up, as always, but I can tell ya my last run was awesome. 55.0sec on my way to a solid 54sec run until the back end tried to come around in the second to last element. Hadnt stepped out in that section all day, but got crossed up pretty good and with a slow:1 ratio steering box it took some work to pull it back in. Miatas were runnin 53's and Subies were hittin 50's and high 49's.
Nice Ranger! What are the specs.
Winter beater, 4/5 drop, big brakes, mild turbo setup
http://www.turborangerforums.com/showthread.php?t=686
Very nice. Are you a member on Ranger Station? I think I've seen you truck there.
Nice read, as is your Tbird thread. What did you end up using for front calipers?..I remember you saying you didn't like the sport trac pieces......
LOL, I guess the truck is a hit.....no, I'm not on TRS, so if it was my truck, someone was reposting it from RPS or TRF
Front calipers are 97 ranger units, which are nearly identical to the sport trac ones. No issues using the ST calipers if a guy wanted to do so, I just didnt want to use Cobra calipers on it because they are actually smaller than the stock ranger ones.

I forgot that puttin the truck in BP meant I wouldnt get the tire handicap. Doesnt really matter since this wasnt a points event, but looking at raw times I would have actually placed 23rd rather than 25th if I had classed myself in SM(ahead of two more civics, hehe).
I love that truck...those little Rangers are a neat platform to build on. I had a '97 2.3 2wd I would have loved to turbo, lower, etc.
Do you do all your events at the place in your link? It's something I've always thought I'd love to try but we don't have stuff like that down here in the boondocks (I'm about 90 mi southwest of Indy). I would even love to just come watch and get my feet wet sometime.
Yes, the Columbus region is where I do all my events. I may eventually try to hit some Indy region events, but havent so far. Come on up any time!
I may have to take you up on that...
I cant believe you guys ran already. First one in clevland is like april 6th or something, but I already know I'm not making that one. Trying for april 17th in toledo.
yup, fun event is always last Sunday in February here. We have our next one(first points event) March 27....I'm pushin to have the car ready....
Do you have a link to your full schedule you can post up?
http://www.nworscca.com/2010-solo-schedule.html
this is for 2011, so dont let the 2010 in the link scare ya, lol.
hrrrrmmmm, you have en event on the 12th of June, I will hafta keep that in mind. I could possibly make Toledo become "on the way home" from the HRPT trip.
that would be cool!
Got the car out Sunday. 25degrees when I left the house. I will not do that again! No grip all day, froze my tail off.

Hope its warmer on 4/17....
Our even scheduled for 4/17 was re-scheduled for yesterday. Despite an unstable weather forecast, I decided to take my chances and I'm glad I went out. Wet roads on the way down, but mostly dry for our runs, then rain while we handed out trophies. Doesn't get much better than that when battling mother nature!
Even on slightly damp pavement, the rear of the car felt more planted with the 275's vs last year on 245's which made me quite happy. The back section of this course was very technical, and it took me 4 runs just to make it thru smoothly. My 5th run felt great, but I tagged a cone at the very end of the course. I got a bit ahead of myself, was already starting to celebrate a good run, then THUMP!! Then a string of curse words I'm sure even the corner worker could hear...I never hit a cone coming out of a box like that.....can't say that anymore.

I'm getting tired of it raining all the time, but so far it has dried out everytime I ran, even though it has been raining when we arrived, lol.
Looks good. Does your region post an overall list w/o PAX?
nope. Just by class. They also have novice's and a cone list for each event. At the end of the year, whoever has the highest number of cones gets an award, lol.
Finally nice weather, and my competitors showed up! I am VERY pleased with the new(to me) rear tires on the car. My first run I was waaaaay slow on throttle inputs; the car actually had grip out back and I wasnt used to it.
I came out second runnin against cars that are 1000lbs lighter with wider tires, and more power than me. Didnt get beat by much either, 4 tenths I think.
Results when they are posted.

I wish we had some people takin pics like Ethan does at his events!
you'll just have to run with us on the 12th then! As long as keith shows up, there are always pictures taken, depending on what heat he runs.
Good job though! What kind of tires are you running now anyway, dont remember.
Currently have 245/45 Kuhmo XS on front, and 275/40 V700 out back. All well used.
Unfortunately, I think the 12th is gonna be out for a couple reasons. We will be needing to get back down here, and the car is gonna be on 245's all the way around for the trip.
Went out for an event today......KABOOM on the first run.

nuthin lasts forever, and this one had well over 200K on the clock and some serious abuse in my hands....
One of these things, is not like the others...
Bummer. You have parts handy to fix? Or are you just going to drop in a JY shortblock?
Wow! It's not like it owed you anything, but it's still a hassle getting it fixed. Hope you have minimal down time.
Wait a minute! Isn't that arrow supposed to be pointing forward? :) OUCH!
x11ty billion
Chuck, I could cobble sumthin together with a DIS block, SJ crank, and N/A rods, but I put my one spare turbo shortblock into the Ranger....I think I have a lead on a complete 88 TC motor for cheap. Will find out Thurs. Then it will be decision time as I was just about to order up that cam from Bo. This makes a good physical opportunity, but not necessarily a good financial one since I will have to reallocate some of those funds for the used motor and new gaskets.....
On the bright side, none of the head bolts broke(even though this block is likely toasted anyhow), and the HG looked perfect after nearly 10yrs of (ab)use :screwy:
I have 2 spares still together and one taken apart if you need one. Both are unknown condition, but I know one ran. The other I bought off brian rasey, but its been open for a couple years now. I know I'm still quite a distance from you, but if you don't have any luck getting one, I can probably let one go.
I got rid of a bunch of 2.3T stuff a couple years ago, but I do have at least 1 turbo block and rotating assy here. I'd need to check them out to see their condition, but you're welcome to come by and check things out if you like.
I have a complete 2.3T out of my TC with 127K. It ran great when pulled. Unfortunately, I'm very far away from Indy.
Thanks for all the offers guys!
I am gonna try to get this complete motor Thursday and find out if it will work for me. If not it will at least become some spares. Gonna try to get this back on the road with plasti-gauge and lapping compound vs. ridge reamers and bore gauges.
I dont wanna hafta be breaking in new rings in the middle of the season.
I know its about a week late, but over the july 4th weekend, I ran a scca national tour at toledo express airport. 354 entrants - 9 in CP. I finished 6th even though I was down on power compared to the rest of the class on a power course. I was the only one not on 16" slicks(I have 18" hoosier A6's) and definately the only one without a V8, lol.
Rock on!
I am gonna miss an event tomorrow since the car is still waiting on parts :disappoin
Two weeks ago I set FTD at a corvette club autox in lorain, oh. I always think its funny because we've been autoxing with them for 2 years now and every time we go, there is never a corvette on top, and its not always my dad or I. This was my first ftd with this car though and made me very happy.
heres a video from fostoria this weekend. My best run, but unfortunately I didnt set the record like I wanted to. This course has records since it is a permanent course that doesn't change Still amost a full second off of it, but I did run almost a full second faster here than I did with my burgundy car.
http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=238817349471728&saved#!/video/video.php?v=238817349471728
That course looks fun. Was that tire rub I heard?
nope, that was the detroit trutrac complaining. I hate that diff. It won't do anything unless both wheels are at least touching the ground, lol. I guess I need to go to the locker or something else. We run that course again the last event this year.
BTW: did you see how far the tach went? It went farther at the corvette club autox
85-6 tach too. Thats alot for a stock bottom end!
hence the new engine build, lol.
Oh, it is good to be back!
Finished second in class by 0.03sec to a FF Cobra today. Spent my first few runs just relearning the car. The revs and boost come up so much quicker than before, I have to learn some new throttle control. ;)
Congrats on getting back in the saddle! Ya thing you might have a slight disadvantage to a FF Cobra?
mmmmm, possibly. If you mean like the +1k lbs weight difference, or the wheelbase, or the trickflow H/C/I small block he says puts out 350hp, or the fact that he has more tire than me, then maybe so :hick:
With the IRS swap, I cannot run in the "normal" CP class where the fox chassis lives. Locally I get to play one step higher where the IRS Mustang Cobras would be. Nationally, I would likely hafta run in XP which is pretty open from a rules standpoint.
Day one of Super Weekend is done, and it was wet. Didnt rain a drop at my house all day, but pissed on us at the event site nearly the whole time. First heat got in 4 "dry" runs. Pavement was wet, but not raining. I was in the second heat....
Tomorrow should be dry all day.
What IRS are you running? 1999-2004 Cobra? I'm really interested to know. Cool car and congratulations on such great times!
yup, Cobra IRS.
Today was good. Decent weather, dry pavement. New-to-me front tires have enough grip to make the car feel a tad loose out back. Might try to tweak a bit here and there, but the car feels good overall.
Ended up winning my class for the weekend. I'll put up the results when they are online.

Good job Gumby.
Thanks Chris!
NEWSFLASH:
Bottoming out the rear suspension WILL cause snap oversteer. Who woulda thunk it?
I was contemplating disconnecting the rear swaybar for the next event due to some issues with the back of the car gettin loose in steady state corners. While under the car today I noticed some fresh witness marks on the CV shafts that hadn't been there previously.
A lil investigating found the CV'shiznitting the upper control arm at about 1" up travel. Apparently the R-comps are working the suspension a bit more than in the past :hick:
When I built the rear suspension I cycled everything to decide how to mount my shocks, but thinking back, I'm not 100% sure I had the CV's in place at that time. So I checked the shock travel, and sure as shiznit I wasn't even close to the bumpstops.
Spent a lil quality time with the grinder against the upper control arm and gained a full inch of up travel w/o changing anything else. Guess I'll leave that swaybar on there....:toilet:
Chris, You still running factory rubber bushings out back in your IRS??
No rubber bushings anywhere on my car. The IRS sub is poly front mount, and solid rear mount. Control arms are Delrin. Diff mounts are poly
Do you mean the tires are working the suspension enough to cause the IRS components to interfere?
What spring rates are you running?
Yup. Remember though, my upper control arm mounts have been cut off the subframe and relocated. That modification "required" the use of aftermarket control arms which I opted out of.
00 CobraR coils
I think you were better off staying with the stock uppers, even if you had to mod them a bit.
BTW, did you head out to Putnam Park this weekend? :p
agreed on the uppers.
I soooo thought about goin out there
I almost called you. I had a bunch of stuff to do on Sat though.
This weekend I finalize my cp standings for the year. Nobody can beat me now, lol. Course was really challenging this weekend and there were lots of coneshiznit. I had problems in one spot with my car doing the snap oversteer thing, but thanks to a picture, I found out what was really happening. I was loosing the grip off the inside rear tire and causing it to slide out. It was through a bumpy area too to make things worse!
Is that two tires off the ground??! :hick:
yes it is! Dad said around another corner he saw 3 off which is really interesting since I didn't know the front wheel was coming up let alone 2 more, lol.
Heres the results from sunday - looks like only 6 faster than I.

fordguy545, That is some serious stick to lift TWO tires off the ground. Congratulations on winning your class and being tough competition for those Corvettes, Miata, and Solstice.
If I remember correctly, your torque arm rear suspension doesn't allow the rear end to pivot like it should. That is why MM has a heim joint type of setup at the front of the torque arm. Could that be it?
I think it only did it there because of the bump that was there. It articulated pretty good when I had the 350# springs in the rear. Lifted the front 6-8" and still had the rear on the ground. Now the rear has 500# springs and it usually sticks pretty good. Truthfully, the mm setup is nicer in that respect, but is far weaker than mine. So far I havent really seen any detriment using this setup since it seems to work great, but at this point I think I just have the car so stiff that it doesn't like bumps. On concrete its absolutely AWESOME!
Thanks Gumby. I'm going to check mine just in case.
fordguy, congrats for getting air (bump or no bump).
Today I managed to get 3rd fastest out of 50(This event smallest turnout for NWORSCCA each year) and the two drivers in the solstice got me. One only got me by .1 but the person who owns it got me by 1.3s. Also even with being 3rd fastest, I only managed 17th in index which really kinda surprised me. This course was VERY dirty having had patches put in the lot like the tar and chip paving with way too much rock to tar. Most of it was broken up by the end of the day and had mounds of rock around the course. If you got off the clean stuff, you were sideways into a massive cone wall. I also had a codriver today that actually managed to pick up 20 cones - yes thats 20 cones, but he had never driven a turbo car before either. He normally runs an ss camaro in cp thats still FS legal.
Top 3 overall is great!
I stayed home due to rain :punchballs:
Got out again on the 16th and ended up running the majority of the day w/o rear brakes. Popped a rear line on my second run. Cleaned up, shut the prop valve off, and put it back in grid! 5 DNF's in a row followed by a clean 49sec run was good enough for second in class, haha!

^wow, your car actually rolls Alot! Congrats on doing well with only half your brakes, lol. Whats with the tire handicap thing? Havent ever seen that before.
I ended up going to national trail raceway for a race with OVR SCCA on 10/22. Great course other than being bumpy(we'll get to that later), but ended up being the fastest car. I had 3 F125 karts and an FM ahead of me
http://www.ovr-scca.org/uploads/ax_results/2011/11_raw_2011-10-22.htm
I actually indexed 4th!

AND beat a former national champ! I figure its a good way to finish out the year - even though I ended up bending something with the panhard bar(I said it was bumpy!!)
Pics

nice runs, and pics!
The tire handicap is for guys runnin street tires(>140 treadwear) in street classes where R-comps are allowed.
Alot is a relative term....it doesnt roll as much as your red car, haha!
gumby, I wouldn't say your car leans a lot. The car sits too low to roll to much.
fordguy, congratulations on your timings! I was reviewing the pictures... are you riding the brakes? heel tow driving?
gumby - touche, lol. my red car rolls ALOT!, hence why you only had one capitol letter, rofl
Shredder - yes I left foot brake. It seems to settle the car and allow me to get right back on the throttle.
Congrats guys! It's fun to watch how you are doing. I totally suck around the cones.
Amazing final event today!
Lookin at just the raw times, I finished ahead of alot of guys I have never beat before. Car felt great, new tune cleaned up throttle response and drivability, left the street tires on cause I think my rear race tires are junk. Was cool today, and I have been having major issues gettin the rear R-comps up to temp so I just decided to leave them off.
Finally beat that vette I have been chasing all year!
Results once they are posted.
Congratulations! Can't wait to see the results and pics.
Here ya go. So close to a top 10 in raw.....guess that will hafta wait till next year.
