Hey all, my stock fuel pump died in my '88 Cougar, so I got a 255lph one from Summit. It subsequently died on me when the tank was close to empty a WEEK LATER, and according to my mechanic, it was because the pickup/sock on the new pump isn't in the same location as my stock pump.
I am going over there to examine, but has anyone heard of this? And what the proper fix might be?
TIA...
I don't see how the position of the sock could affect it. It is just a filter.
X2. It's just a filter.
It was probably a bad pump. Stuff happens, even to new parts. The filter doesn't have a choice but to be in the location it's supposed to be. The pump only fits in the tank one way.
The Tbirds use a different sock than the Mustangs.
Yup. NAPA used to have 'em. Haven't checked recently.
I've heard that running an EFI pump in a dry tank will kill it but I've never seen it happen.
Only thing I could think of. I know the fuel cools the pump.

Went to my mechanic, yup, its a different sock. If you run it low with a Mustang sock (something I'll never do again) you will kill the pump. And the Tbird sock has a smaller opening that won't fit on a aftermarket Walboro.
LincolnsOnline peeps say that a Mark VII sock fits just fine, so I have ordered one.
Nick has a good idea there too, I will look into it more when LoL's database stops ping out on me.

There is a Tbird specific kit with the proper hardware/sock etc that fits perfectly.
FYI: it took a little while but after seeing what the Mark VII guys do, I put Mark VII sock for my Cougar...and that worked! The socks between the Mark and Tbird/Cougar are the same, except for the diameter of the sock where it attaches to the fuel pump.
So when you upgrade your fuel pump, get a Mark VII sock for it too!!!
I bought from this link and the sock was correct.

Nice, but in case you get a fuel pump from somewhere else for less money (like a guy parting out a Mustang) you don't need to buy a kit, you just spend $12 for the 1988 Lincoln Mark VII sock.
Scary concept, isn't it, lol.
What part # do you have, I used my old sock on mine not a problem.
