Title: taking delivery on 3mar of 88 tbird sport car transport companies
Post by: jcassity on February 13, 2011, 07:50:56 PM
I am in process of setting up the transaction for a bird.
I want to know of any transport companies that people here have used and things went well.
I am looking at 2k miles of transport and am willing to pay for quality of service but I have no basic idea of what an average cost would be or who to use.

any help would be appreciated.

Figure $1.50 to $2.00 per mile

FedEx & UPS are brokers for car hauling, so looking for Hot Shot companies may save you a few bucks. If you google for RV Transporters, some of those companies also offer hot shot trucking service (think dually pick 'em ups with 43' trailers). StarFleet Trucking is one example.

Another option would be to rent a u-haul and trailer it yourself. I looked into hauling two cars approximately 750 miles & it would have saved me about $100. Although I did talk to a driver from Cain's Auto Transport (Murray, KY) & those guys offered me a helluvah deal, too bad they wouldn't book the load as far out as it was going to be needed.

*edit - Since you're in WV, I would call Cain's ...they run through your neck of the woods several times a week.

I used Thomas Sunday and all went well. There are several good transporters out there and you are doing the right thing by getting references. I believe Reliable Carriers has a good reputation too but I haven't used them.

I got a quote from a small local hauler and his price was higher due to just transporting my car from point A to point B. The bigger carriers will schedule several pickup and deliveries along the route which will save you money.

by the end of this week I need to have decided on a carrier and schedule things with the seller, sounds easy enough though.

My company uses a fleet carrier which I can use thier rate to get a quote.  They are called Trinity , thats about all I know about them so far other than my brief converstation with our transport guru at work.

I still think when we are talking about 2k miles, flying out and time spent is like a no brainer to have someone else get the job vs my flying out and driving back.

Pick up is near salt lake city UT.

So,, today turned out to be a pretty expensive day.  Hopefully got funds transfered, got insurance scheduled, set up shipping, and to boot, the wife had me stop and look at a 2.0 Audi 1993 turbo, and.......had to buy a new box spring / matress set.

Man, you should have had me look at it for you. Is it that Thunderbird that was for sale by privateer? I work in salt lake, and we just shipped some work trucks from salt lake to Kentucky. I know its not right to you, but maybes could have worked out a deal with the boss to get it closer to you for cheaper.

Let me know if you need anything out here in Utah.

Yup,, that be the car,, 800 in shipping...........so far.
Money transfer went well, I pretty much coordinated everything in 2 1/2 hours today lock stock and barrel.
He says the amp guage isnt quite right although the youtube walk around vid doesnt seem to show a problem.
All in all, im happy.  oil needle seems a bit low so worse case Ill just change out the oil to 15w40, guage seems a little low but I dont know whats normal on the buttstuffog guages.

I am very very happy.

here is the vid,, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_Xkdl3_ohM

good props to Thunderchicken on the sequencial lights as well.  Privateer said he liked the quality and detail in the design.

i spent 1100.00 to get my 96 cougar 2000 miles with united. they were one of the ebay
carriers. the only one who would bring it to my door[or within 1/4 mile] had to have a
large enough lot for an auto transport.

Try posting an offer @ http://www.autoexpeditor.com/forumdisplay.php?20-Overload! ...you might be able to get it shipped for less than full blown car carriers. Try it @ a buck twenty a mile and see where it goes.

Company info:
Affordable Trans LLC  877-696-0003  (Mike Prestia)

Original quote was 800.00

revised quote is 1150.00

200.00 down per CC pmt then 850.00 cash / cashiers check to driver when he arrives.

Car was picked up on the 28 feb 11 at 5:30pm at seller location outside of Salt Lake City Utah.
Delivery should happen tomorrow.

So far not bad, no one would consider the trip for 800.00 and I still dont see why that was my problem but the price went up and suddenly there were bids on taking the job.
Live and learn i suppose, I figured it would be expensive.

I have the title changed, Insurance completed, tags done and a new plate for the car.

I think the board needs a sticky with a few car transport companies listed.

Only the ones that were used for real by members here.

in a few hours, later today we all as a family will head out together just to get out for a while.
The Sport will have already been off loaded by the delivery agent and I have already checked out the car.
I have all the required paper work done so that the car is ready and road legal.

We drive by the car and i pretend I dont see it or the For Sale sign I put on the car way in advance.
My son will wig out and see the bird and demand we look at it,,we will : )
We stop, he calls the number on the for sale sign (if the wifes cell phone has enough bars cause mine wont).
He will be dialing my cell number which has been hand written on the sign.
He does not have my cell number memorized so this will be good.
He gets my greeting / voice mail,, ,,,,,,,  ,,, then he turns to me and i toss him the keys.
I tell him everythings good to go and he can drive the car right now.  ,,and ,, theres 50 bucks extra in the glove box to cover his next tank of gas because he better be looking for a job,,lol.

sound good?
This is gonna be great.  I have been collecting bird stuff for about 4 years now in antition of this moment,, but i think i forgot to collect the most important thing,, a new header panel.
better get on that soon.

Glad that car is going to someone who will appreciate it...and I'm jealous...only thing that beast needs is a 5 lug swap, bigger brakes, and some bitchin' GT500 wheels!

That's a perty car...hope he likes it. :)

complete 5lug swap kit comes n the trunk,, as well as one buttstuffog and one full digital cluster, a bunch of spare parts, some rear end parts, bunch of switches, litterally a bunch of stuff he collected for the car.  I think I owe him more money, i feel very bad knowing what all he threw in the trunk,,,oh a spare dash too!  Another computer , some other stuff.  I dono really what all is in the trunk, he rattled off a whole lot of things but I was not able to memorize it all when i took the call, was really busy.

I don't know about the $50 part ...My C1500 has a 30-gallonish tank and it took $88 to fill it from 1/8th ...I sure hope there's at least 11 gallons in the T-Bird's 22 gallon tank ...haha

well, car arrived and we have a very happy new tbrid owner in the family.  He's kinda tired, got work up early but it worked out perfect because we could see the car real good.

The delivery agent somehow along the way damage the tail light so I will be needing one of those asap.
I called the dealer here local and they're gonna let it pass inspection if i have a replacement soon.

I just got a surprise though,
With all the torment and teasing, he decided to use his head and do a little recon.  I kept saying "the answer is right in front of your face" ,ie- when he would be pecking on his IPod.  (what i meant wash he "could" find out if he came here).
Well, he put two and two together and decided to use process of elimination and see what dad's been talking about here.  He trolled through and found this thread,,,,,,,,,,So I was busted as I was just informed,,lol.

a few pics of my the bird and my happy camper.

Thanks, we have our work cut out for use,, some really odd electrical grimlins, but we got it inspected.

example:  you get out of the car and it stops running.  WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  LOL.
I do not think anyone has ever posted an electrical problem like that!!! ever.  My head hurts thinking about it.
It directly effects the inoperable climate control, fuel/temp/oil pres guages and turn only signals, not hazard.  Oh well, thats another thread.
Im happy so for though, I expected a to do list.  Oh, it has an explorer or whatever rear view mirror with navigation installed.

I called and emailed pics to the delivery agent, we will see what happens, i have low expectations and dont want to make a fuss right now or a big ordeal, dont wanna ruin the moment so to speak for mason.

Dude, they've got to carry at least $150K insurance for things like this. If they're worth anything, they'll make this right.

Thanks man,
roughly 3800.00 later is on the road.
To do list isnt all that long,
antenna swap
cruise repair (likely the cable in the fender well driver side is broke)
sequencial lights interfer with the system (pm'd thunder chicken)
shifter is very hard to move, previous B&M was prob done wrong and Privateer installed oem parts but something isnt right.
get the correct door code
console doesnt latch
center headlamps are dull
driver door latch is VERY hard to open the door
interior dome light bulb is out
needs tires although delivery agent cut the driver front , cant prove but know its true so im not making a fuss on this.
verify timing is right, transmission shifts ,,oh,, should i say "too smooth".  OD doesnt kick in easily at 80% throttle, gotta fight it.

thats about it,, not too bad considering my 20th list was much longer and more complicated.

Wow,, what an evening.
timing is good, dead on 10deg
Codes yield 34 in both instant codes and memory , just this one code.  EGR holds vac well.

Big F up for the evening= i was dead sure the cruise ctl clip was broke so we got the fender off and its in tact.
Moved on to fuses,, lol, good thing none of those were blown.  Then I blew through the hose going to the Vac dump valve and it was open.  I adjusted it to the closed position with no brake applied.  Tested car and cruise still does not operate. To be continued.

While mason was testing the cruise, the car held on for him and got him to the driveway but stopped running just out of the blue.
We towed it up to the shop and found a previous repair to the fuel line from filter to engine side with rubber tape.  I cut the line and intend on getting an inline splice insert to repair it.  So, i suppose this is the reason why the engine seemed so slugish, lack of fuel up to the intake.  I told mason this should make a noticeable difference in throttle response.

moving on to antenna later, gotta focus on the big stuff for now like tail light and fuel delivery.

Well, cruise works,, apparently mason wasnt going fast enough to engage it.

Repaired the fuel line with advance splice kits and clamps.
Just a word of advice to anyone, the 5/16 line (supply side) **REPAIR KIT** comes with a splice fitting that reduces the ID of your fuel flow by 50%.
so,, I opt'd to use my heat gun and heat up the line and force feed the 3/8'' splice kit inside.  Few blisters later, its working great and fuel response is better,,much better.

down to tail light and antenna repair,, then adjustment of the sequenctial turn signals so they dont cause the system sentry light to flicker with turn.
