Title: Rubber on lower portion of coils
Post by: Miah on February 05, 2011, 01:33:00 PM
In my feeble attempt to install new bushings on the front lower control arms I ran into a snag. When removing the old coil(s) the driver side coil was broken. I will assume it has been broken for some time due to the amount of rust in-between the breaking points. The break point happened on the lower potion incased in rubber.

Onto the question. I ordered new front coils and the new coils do not have a rubber casing on the lower portion of the coil (portion that seat on top of the control arm). Is this rubber "optional"?

Those rubber pads are NVH reducers, so they're nice to have but not necessary.  They do affect ride height so if you remove one, remove the other side as well.

They reduce noise. A company named, um, I can't remember, make them. They aren't too expensive.

I think energy suspension makes new coil isolators. You want them other wise your car will squeak like crazy.

I've been known to make 'em out of sections of garden hose...

Yes, energy suspension is the name I couldn't think of. I bought a set, they were bright red and work just fine. They were cheap too, like $15.

Maximum Motorsports also makes them but  they are not rubber like the factory.  I had a set on my Coupe for eight years and when I pulled the H&R Super Sports off to go coil over they were still in good shape so they were sold with the H&R's.  MM also makes the rear spring isolators.

I wonder why so many T Bird coil springs break.  I must've read about ten or more broken front springs on this forum.  Mine were broken too.
