Title: Twin turbo diesel literally BLOWN UP....crank and pistons left behind
Post by: ZondaC12 on January 15, 2011, 10:18:56 AM
Has anyone seen/heard of this happening before? I'm sure it has, unlike the idiot yokel commenters on youtube I don't believe it's fake, but that's gotta be RARE. The force that let loose is just ridiculous. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCsSVLZ6wCI&feature=related

Did you happen to see how big those turbos were? I'm sure 50 PSI pushing on those rods at a minimum. If the bottom end was close enough to the framerails, I can see it happening. It's also very possible he was running some form of alternative fuel like nitromethane.(Or some variant)

Uh...YEAH I saw those turbos haha :wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf: they look about as big as a car wheel!!!!! Amazing. I think I'd want a 1/2" thick plate of steel surrounding the whole  thing if I was the driver. I wonder how much power and torque that thing developed before it developed nothing anymore lol.

I agree with jrad235, between the size of those turbos, and probably nitro meth, something had to give. at least it wasnt any more explosive, especially considering top fuel dragsters that use nitro meth regularly wrap their chargers and parts of the cars in teflon blankets to protect the driver.

There wasn't any black smoke, so I think it's safe to say diesel fuel is out. I'd say either alcohol or nitromethane, as well.

Between the torque and weight of tractor and sled, I'd say short of having the engine chained or belted in, it's not a big surprise it came out.

I saw a tractor run one time, it had 2 Allison V12s with 4 turbos on each one. We talked to the owner and also the driver in the pits before it ran...they had no idea how much power it made, but one 300' pull would use about 35 gallons of fuel...I've got a signed poster of it at my dad's in old room.

I just keep thinking how lucky the driver was.
