Title: anybody NOT have belt moldings on their car?
Post by: sarjxxx on January 12, 2011, 08:27:24 PM
My friend did it on his 95 and it looks badass. Thought about doing it on my cougar but I really don't know if it would look as good. Has anybody done it and do you like it?

hmmm well yes but you still have on the front and rear.... but that does look nice.... makes me consider it even more now....

Course I still have a huge dent to worry about... maybe I should leave it all on so it helps distract from it:giggle:

The molding is not removable from the bumper covers like they are on the side panels.

If you don't use the front and rear moulding, then you need to find a way to finish the bumper ends.. And if you have cornering lights, your pretty much stuck with using the front moulding no matter what..

I still love those wheels. And your car. Your car is the one that made me like 4 eyed cars.  I could see that sitting in my driveway... lol
don't get me wrong, there are many other nice 4 eyed on here, I just really like yours. Erics is nice too, but he doesn't have those awesome wheels. lol

Hey, not to jack the thread, but I just converted to 5 lug wheels and can't use those wheels anymore.  I have the wheels with the tires sitting in the garage, so they could be for sale if someone is interested.  They need a really thorough polish, but other than that they're perfect.

Leave the trim on until you're going to paint the car. It's a be-yotch to pull them and the likelihood of scratching up the paint is pretty high. If I ever find NOS or like new trim,it's going back on.

Oh yeah I know but paint is going to be the LAST thing I do to this car so it could be a while. I'm thinking about just pulling them off and rattle canning it since half my current paint job is rattle can anyway:rolleyes:

A spoiler will never be bolted to the trunk of the Sport. They look wrong on the Birds, especially the 87/88's with the shortest trunk lids.Cougars can pull it off better, but they don't need them. The natural lines are great. Before the repaint, there will be a slight trunk mod or two though.I'll leave it at that for now.

Thanks, but...you've really not seen my car before now?! ;)

While we're on the subject...I have never had one single comment about the spoiler on my trunk. Not here, not at shows, never.
Either everyone likes it or nobody notices it!
Honestly it's the only one that I feel looks good on a Cougar, and I had to mod the hell out of it to get it right. Not a fan of the typical pedestal-style spoilers.
I don't know if the car would have looked right with the ground effects but without a spoiler. It seems to balance something somewhere.

Anyway...back to the removal of molding...

I don't have any side moldings at all on my 85. I took them off before it went to the body shop, and I haven't decided if I want them back on. They are in pretty bad shape.

I do regret having the the body shop put the 2-tone paint line dead center where the molding should be. I pretty much have to put them back on to make it look right. Somebody who doesn't know any better might not notice, but it bugs me. But this will give you an idea of what a cougar looks like with none at all :)

This is an old picture, but it's all I could find on my hard drive, lol.

You have to have the trim that meets up with the bumper covers, otherwise,it leaves the bumper covers looking unfinished.

I thought hard about deleting the moldings, but just did not feel it looked right with the molding still on the bumpers and in front of and behind the tires.  Plus its from the 80's...its supposed to have stuff like that ;)

Fiberglass replacements with removable chrome strips would be perfect. I've often thought about that.

That being said, if there was a good, simple way to remove the molding from the bumper covers, our cars would have been SO much cleaner looking.

They're 16x7 fronts and 16x8 rears.  The backspacing is 4.5" front and rear.  I've changed the front tires several times.  I've run 225/50s 215/50s and 205/55s.  The rears were always 245/50s.  I've also changed the rear from T-Bird to Mustang width.  In this photo the car has the Mustang rear, which is about 3/4" narrower on each side.  I think they looked better with the T-Bird rear.

I'm still undecided on removing mine. The car is going to be all black.. I fear black (body colour) moldings will be odd, and I fear if I did them flat black it would look like  on the glossy black. At the same time though I feel a bit bad about removing the Turbocoupe badging on the side and I worry about it getting banged up here (people around here are extremely rude and don't care about other's property for the most part). Also.. I have chrome pieces from a Cougar that I am installing on the bottom edge of the sides that go along well with my wheels - it wont be completely bare and I think it would look very nice without moldings. I also fear that painting the moldings again that they wouldn't look good for long - paint likes to flake off those and get ugly fast; not as easy to deal with as the metal in terms of body work and making it look nice. I think they are going to come off when I paint it.

XXXJust my opinion but I think the color of the car makes a big difference also. When I painted my cougar I left them off since I thought thats what I wanted. Over the winter I finally cleaned them up and straightened them back out and put them on and it looks like a whole different car. I will say though because its a XR7 and has the fat mldg the whole way instead of the skinny between the wheels probably helps in my mind also.

Thanks for the compliment.  Oh yeah, you can run an 8" wheel up front.  In fact, you can run a 9" if you measure carefully.  I have 17x8s on the front of my car now and I'm thinking I'll eventually go to 18x9s in front and 18x10s out back.

By the way, these are factory 17x8s with a 5.72 backspace.  Up front, I'm running 235/45/17s and the rears are 275/40/17s.  I have no issues at all.  In fact I have plenty of room to go bigger.

I'm going to chime in since I'm close to getting started on my 86.  I think all the cars look great without the moulding but I'm torn.  My mouldings are not beat up but the "plastic" chrome is all gone.  I like ivygreen's body color bumpers with that color too.  I have a taupe car and the black mouldings make it look fat.  So I'm soooo confused.  I'm probably going white but too much white will be bad.  Painting is way off.

I hate this thread.  It not making decisions easy.  Eric's vert is fantastic.  You can park it in my garage anytime.

I don't hate the all white look at all.  This notch looks exactly like one I used to own.

I've seen people replace the chrome on the moldings, which would really break up the white nicely.  I think there are threads on here about how to do it.

I just removed my side moldings on my truck yesterday, and I had removed them from my Trans Am a couple years ago too. I use a hair dryer and get the glue really warm and gooey. Take your time and gently pull them off that way and they wont be damaged.
