Classic scam. They send you "extra money", you give them change, the original payment fails, and you get nothing. They "keep the change".

scam! this is why i don't have a paypal anymore.. they do guarantee the money BUT the money comes from a false source.. paypal and the bank doesn't catch it before you receive the money and it clears to your bank account.. i got royally screwed on this and paypal held me responsible.. assholes

I get that scam a lot when I put something on CL for more than a couple hundred bucks. Got it when I was trying to sell my old Thunderbird.

I have reached the point where I turn off the ability to email me from craigslist. People only email dumb questions anyway (99% of them are answered in the ad, they are just lazy or illiterate). I put my phone number, and they have to call me if they are interested. That way I know they are real local people.

i don't put my phone on there anymore, don't know if anybody got this but i kept getting calls from this dude wanting me to list my vehicle with there service for a small fee. So i read up on it and turns out ofcourse its spam and you pay the money and never hear from them again.

i've gotten calls similar to that.. as well as the typical scammers calling.. you can tell they're from the middle east from their voices

I'd never ever give my cell # out like that...all the ads I put on CL now just have one of my old email accounts...if someone is serious, after a couple of emails I'll trade numbers.

And that is how I word it too, "trade numbers". I've sold a T5 and an 8.8 rear, as well as some some other non-car stuff, never been ripped. But I have gotten the bogus emails, bullshiznit "car listing ads", and such.
Just gotta be savvy.

And, to the OP, never trust someone who will buy a car sight unseen, lol. Especially when they want to send some money like you've mentioned. Sounds like you figured it out though. Merry Christmas!
