Title: First time hitting a deer/ causing damage to one of my cars
Post by: blain_gatterdam on November 15, 2010, 10:19:21 PM
I was pretty lucky, slowed down from 75 to about 30 before I smacked him. Bambi did some sweet acrobatics before getting up and trotting away, which sucks because he had a VERRRY nice rack.

Anywho, It only cracked my grill and my headlight. Most people I've told this to say if I hit him any faster it probably would have totaled my car.

I'm just glad it was in my truck and not my tbird or camaro. I just went to the junkyard and pulled a grille thats even the same color so I wont have to paint

next up, my "clear" ebay headlights and v-hids!

I'm curious about some of your experiences / pictures.

Killed a seven point buck with my Cougar a couple years back. I was going about 45 and didn't even have time to hit the brakes. Insurance company totalled the car. I kept it and rebuilt it though.

Thats pretty gnarly, as much space as there is in the noses of our cars, it probably didnt bend anything past the sheetmetal did it?

No, not really. The radiator support had a little ding in it. Straightened it out pretty easily. Fender, hood, header panel, grill, and lights all replaced. Fortunately I had a red parts car in the back yard.

I hit a deer in my Explorer about a month ago. I dont have any pic but I was going over 60 mph when it hit him. I didnt have a chance it hit the brakes. It totalled my poor explorer. The grille, PS headlight, PS front fender, hood, windshield, core support, radiator, and fan, were trashed. Plus the airbags blew. It least no one was killed.

Well if it was a 96-up you just found your disc 8.8 rear lol

Sucks though, once it gets to the windshield they are toast

Good to know your thick-skinned and remember you're around a bunch of Ford guys..... ;) Not a personal insult on you but I would much rather see any Chevrolet get damaged than any Ford.

I could agree with this, but in this case I'd rather the car I can readily get parts for get smashed than a possible future collectible. (and the numbers of thirdgen camaros getting smashed, thrashed and trashed... its bound to happen eventually)

Hell, even jalopnik wrote it in as the top white trash car you can get.

Anywho, not to start a ford/chevy battle here in my deer thread, I love my tbird and it is very special to me, but I can respect a car that someone takes meticulous care of, regardless of brand/ stereotype.

I agree. When I see a car that has been noticeably taken care of it stands out to me and is a good reflection of how the owner appreciates the car, no matter what brand, even if I'm not a fan of Chevy's. :D

And like I said, no personal insult to you, just a playful comment. :D

No matter what car you were in, it's still good to see nothing major happened to you or your car. I have seen what a good size deer can do to someone and their car.

shiznit! Why didnt I think of that? I could have fixed it but without a job and the cost of airbags I just could'nt afford it.

Not to hijack the thread, but I thought only the sn-95 mustang rear would work with our cars...?

Yeah the ex rear is leaf spring mounted so it would take some fabbing and welding to make it work.

Width can't be too far off though

Oh. My. God.

Vinnie said a swear word, time to wash my monitor off with soap and water...my eyes too while I'm at it..lol

I've hit 9 or 10 deer since I started driving ('94) and only one did damage that I wasn't able to repair myself...

Save a car...shoot a deer.

Down in Kansas City, they used to have a problem with wildlife getting onto the runway...I think the biggest problem was coyotes..

Deer can exist just about anywhere, a few years ago in Brookfield (about 4800 people, 5 miles from me) a deer busted through a plate glass window on a store, ran amok inside, before exiting through another window. Blood everywhere..I saw it myself after the fact.

Probably not many deer in the 'burbs of Chi-town, but in the more rural areas, I'll bet there's a few lurking..

Talk about bambi bites back lol

I'm going to be ready for them next time. I want to fab up a solid steel off-road type bumper, so they fly further with virtually no damage to my truck haha

Hit one in 2000 three weeks after a paint job (note overspray on radiator). It left poo on the hood (note poo on hood).
