Title: Spedo
Post by: thewestie on November 08, 2010, 11:01:23 PM
Hi I've swapped from auto to stick and 2.3 to 5.8 carbed. I lost the computer and with it the speedo. Can I use a mustang spedo and cable and a drive in the tranny I know I can get the drive and cable I'm looking for a good fit in the dash?  While I'm here can I get the factory tach to work?

Thanks  :burnout:

Are you going with a T5 for the trans...just get the driven gear for the wheel/tire combo in the T5 application, stick it in, done deal.

The stang cluster won't work in a Bird/Cougar dash...as for the tach, I put an '88 Sport (V8) cluster in an '88 3.8 car...added some wire to the tach input on the cluster, and ran it up to the coil...for some odd-ass reason, the tach registered correctly although it was for the 5.0...

Anyway, the speedo issue is really easy, use the wire you have, just get the correct part from a T5 (or whatever trans you use, be it T5, T45, T56 etc)
There's a chart HERE (http://"http://www.fordracingparts.com/download/charts/129.pdf")that will help you pick the right color/teeth per wheel/tire size you run.

I'm using a t5 till I get the loot for a Tremec I plugged the tranny in with the factory plug and no speedo I was told that since I took out the speed density computer Id need to go to a cable driven speedo

I can't say if the lack of an EEC will affect the electro-speedo or not...as far as Mustang clusters go, the rather large aftermarket for 'Stangs has tempted me to swap in a 94+ Stang dash...but, not sure of they're cable or electric speedo (read; too tired/lazy/sleep to search right now lol)

Maybe someone else will chime in about the no eec/speedo quandary..

Wayne Wallace Winch , he and I were very good friends when I lived up there.  Tell him Daryl said Hello next time you speak to him ,  he will know who I am

And My amp gauge works just like factory after my 3g swap

the cluster doesnt need the eec,, however the swap you've done may have interrupted the shunt wiring for the amp gauge.

go to the diy thread in misc tech ,, you will find my EVTM manual up on photo bucket.

also, double check the 3g swap in electrical tech sticky,, theres a final draft version we all did there which has 2.3L corrections as a result of someones car that caught fire because he may have made a mistake or the factory wiring had conflicts with the ref manual.

the 2.3 is a fickle  ,,, and wiring is sort of a one of a kind thing.

Fixed, lol

What was that kid's name...? I think changing his own oil was a challenge, from some of his posts...

well, he seemed to have baffeled all of us with the root cause but if you read on through his thread and his details on the front end of what he did,, we all did notice an oddity with the 87 tc vs the 88 tc being slightly different.  I was hoping someone who owned em all would have been able to cypher through his threads and figure out which wire took him down the wrong path.

I concluded there was an existing wiring error that by default put the 3g upgrade into jeopardy right off the bat...ie- some hacked wiring conflicting with the charge harness / shunt wiring.

The post actually started on the hopes of getting the factory speedo working. I got lost in a 3g upgrade and meeting people. I have a working alternator still no fac amp gauge or speedo can figure out the gauge just got to look at what I did wrong the gauge worked before the 3 g swap so I'm 99% sure it was operator error . Need solid answers on speedo

The gauge actually was working the whole time. the 3g alt works so much better that the gauge doesn't jump when throttling the motor like the 75 amp alt.  Started the car to move in 15 degree day with weak battery and the gauge was moving then.

still no speedo Help  :stupid:

http://www.coolcats.net/modifying/gauges.html

Read the last paragraph. I don't know much about the speedometers, or the gauges but that has a little information. Maybe you should send ericcoolcats a message, he might have some information for you.
