Title: Hot Rod Power Tour 2011
Post by: 50tbrd88 on November 04, 2010, 10:12:00 AM
Anyone considering going?  I am going again and can't wait!  Its going very close to home for me and will be at Indy this year for one stop.  I am hoping we get to drive on the track:burnout:.

Here is a link to the route:http://www.hotrod.com/powertour/2011/hrdp_2011_hot_rod_power_tour_locations_dates_registration/index.html

I plan to do Nashville, Indy, Muskegon, and Detroit.

If any of you guys want to go and need a travel buddy, let me know.  I can tell you this, its a GREAT experience!

That's the plan...hopefully I can drive it around the track.  I would love to add that memory to the many I have had in the car.

I fully understand.  I wasn't even planning on doing the tour this year but when I saw the route and told the wife about it, she was like "you've gotta go".  If you decide to go, let me know!

Thanks.  I need to go back and add some more pictures.  I've finished welding in all the replacement metal and paint for the engine bay.  Just need to put it back together.

Will you be starting near your neck of the woods, or Nashville? I'm going to make the hour-long drive to Nashville, then the drive from the Guitar to Indy.

Thanks for the heads up on the Tour stops!

I will be hitting at least the last two stops (I grew up in Muskegon), but may be available to do a couple of the earlier stops too.  Just have to get the dates worked into my calendar.

I planned to do some pretty extensive upgrades on the car this winter, but for the first time in more years than I care to admit, I won't have a space to work on it.  The good news is: the long awaited garage addition is finally under way!  My decades of suffering a pre-1925 garage should be over in a few months.  It won't be the garagemahal, but it will be a great improvement.

Anyway, something dramatic would have to happen not to see me on the Tour!

I'd love to check your car out.  We will have to meet up in Muskegon.  I'm getting ready to book rooms...you know of any good hotels?

Unfortunately I don't have a specific recommendation, I typically stay with family on my vists there.

If you would like to be very close to the downtown venue, there are only a few choices and they are probably a little more expensive.  The good news is: Muskegon is not very big.  As a general rule of thumb it takes 15 minutes to get anywhere.  The greatest number of accomodations will probably be that far away.

That area is HUGE gear head territory, expect people to be coming from all over the west side and northern part of the state to involved in the event!

Something not to be missed for those of you going there is Pere Marquett Park.  It is one of the top 10 inland lake beaches.  It's a nice cruise from Down Town and there is lot going on down there in the summer.

I ended up booking the "Sline Inn".  Sounded like a cool place.

Sounds good. I'm looking forward to the drive, man. It'll make for a good test of the car after I get it back and a primer of the drive I plan to make to Carlisle, PA, in 2012.

Just looked at the map, it was Brownstown, IN, I went to. I always think Bloomfield, for some reason. Although, I have frequented Bloomfield, KY, a time or two-dozen.

That would be great.  I have gone the last 3 years but always alone (just me and a passenger).  It would be cool to have a fox body caravan.

I just hope I get the T-bird up to speed in time.  I may have to take the Mustang again.

And Scott, we could even ride down to Nashville together, like a mini-caravan LOL

Greg,

If only I had the kind of room you do!  It sure would simplify the process and I'd end up with a real building too!

I live in a historic district and I'm starting with an OLD 18X20 garage with a dual set of carriage doors.  It's considered a "contributing structure" so the exterior (including the doors and the windows) must remain intact.  I had to get creative to get the most out of a 12X20 addition (for an overall 20X30).

12X20 doesn't sound like much, but it's a complex project.  The nasty cracked old floor has to be removed and a new one poored w/a 3" recess for the low rise hoist in the right bay, underpinnings added to the foundation to support the steel to reinforce the loft, to gain head room in the loft, the ceiling will be dropped a foot in the old part, a pull down stairway (not a ladder) for access and an electric hoist to get big things up there, a 100 amp electircal box, closed cell spray foam insulation and plywood on the walls.  To make sure I can see, the walls will be white and floor grey epoxy.

It'll be as sturdy as the proverbial brick shiznit house!

The thought of having a clean floor to work off, the ability maintain a comfortable temperature, adequate light and electric, seems like paradise to me!  It's a dream I have formulated for decades and saved to make happen.  Kind of hard to believe its started...

As it progresses, I'll start a thread w/pics and narative on the trials and tribulations.  Its already two weeks behind due to a delay in the inspection on the depth of the foundation trench (yes, in my town there is a two week back log on construction inspections!).

I was just doing some quick and rough figuring with mapquest, looks like my total trip will be at least 1386 miles!  Back in the day I would put maybe 300-350 miles a week on the 'bird.  Its been a LONG time since she's seen any action like Power Tour.  Its 8 mos away and I'm already nervous she will leave me stranded somewhere.

I cringe at the thought of how bad my back is going to hurt (the old 'bird rides rough).  I'm thinking some meatier (taller) rear tires are in order to hopefully curtail some of the roughness and to maybe correct my speedo a little.  The front end rebuild I have planned for spring should help improve things as well.

Now if the tranny will just hold out...an AOD with 180,000+ miles is a formula for something very bad to happen at any time.

Who has rooms already, and what hotels are you in?
How do the stops work schedule-wise?

I will be doing Nashville->Indy->Muskegon->Detroit...I will PM you what hotels I have booked.  I went on bangshift.com forums and tried to see where most of those guys are staying.  It pays off to stay in the same hotels as the members of that forum as they usually get pretty rowdy with the burnouts and stuff.

So anyone else decided to join the fun?

I just heard from a neighbor guy who is thrashing on his 1st gen Camaro vert project.  He is putting a 5.3 truck motor and 200r4 and is hoping to have it road worthy by June for Power Tour.  He also has a co-worker who plans to go.

Power Tour will be here before you know it.  I plan to start on my front-end work (new rack, pump, etc) and may have to rebuild the stock tranny.  It was starting to give me issues in the fall...and with all the miles on the car, it is due to die on me any time (it's never been touched other than fluid/filter changes).

I'm anxious to start on my punch list.  I've got a lot planned, but time is rolling quick and I'm still waiting to get my work space finished.  Had someone out to see if the floor could be ground close to level, he laughed!  The pour is pretty bad.  The contractor is finally looking seriously at cutting it out and pouring a new one.  Inconvenient, but not the end of the world.

Will there be somewhere that the actual route that will  be driven will be posted? From what I can tell it's usually not released until just before the event. I'll be a little ways north of Cocoa on the kickoff weekend but won't be able to get down there. There is a chance I could set up a "temporary campsite" near the road for the parade if I knew where it was going to be though.... like maybe somewhere along A1A?

They never release the actual final routes until a few days before the event or so.  They normally use 2 lane roads instead of interstates as much as possible.

Ah, crunch time; how boring would my life be without thee?

I thought I was ready aside from general cleaning and detailing. Just waiting to get my original wheel parts back so I could reassemble them in the configuration they were last year.
I called today to make sure we were on track to have them shipped back. That was confirmed but I was also informed that my new parts, that weren't  scheduled to be finished till July, will be ready in 2-3weeks!!!! So now I am scrambling to setup some new street tires to go on the wheels IF the new parts are ready in time.
I gotta have the parts in my hands by the 6th to make this work. The silicone needs 24hrs to cure before I can install tires.....

Nothing like a last minute parts thrash before a big trip.  lol...hopefully it all pans out Gumby!

At least its only wheels. I was contemplating gettin the car tuned on the MAF before the trip, but decided I'm probly better off to keep the combo that hasn't left me stranded so far vs. playin with sumthin new. I'll get the MAF stuff straightened out after HRPT

lol, yeah you don't want to push your luck man.  I'm doing that to an extent with my fresh t5 swap...hopefully I can get a lot of seat time in over the next few weeks to work out any bugs.

Hopefully we will get to meet up in Indy, I'd love to check out your car.  What all stops are you doing?

I'm sure we will get everyone together here in Indy and organize up a bit. I'm going from Indy to the end.

I saw where Hot Rod released the driving route.  Looks like it will be going through Lawrence and Brown County on the way from Nashville to Indy, that should make for a beautiful drive.

I'm getting excited to hit the road!  Hope to see some of you guys in Indy.

I just got the cars out of storage and back into the garage on Sunday (the garage project went almost 6 months longer than projected...).  There's a bit of thrashing that's needed to make sure I make it to Indy.  Very little of what I had planned will be done for this trip, but at least I now have a comfortable space to work in!

Power Tour is getting closer guys!  Last night I loaded up a small toolbox with anything I could think of that might come in handy in the event of a breakdown (god forbid).

This weekend I plan to wash and wax the bird and give it a good detail job before leaving on Tuesday AM for Nashville.

Look forward to seeing some of you in Indy!

I might try this next summer as I won't be taking summer classes for my masters (I should be done by next summer:)). The old T-bird needs a nice, long, road trip.

Bring ignition/TFI parts! That's the only thing I worry about breaking down on mine.

Blah, the shop doing the headgaskets on the 'underbird hasn't got it ready, yet. Looks like I'll have to wait for FTCF Dyno Day 2 :(

I reckon it'll be alright, at least I know the 'bird's getting taken very good care of :)

Tick Tock, Tick Tock

I bolted my wheels together today in the old configuration. Havent sealed them up just yet, in case the new parts show up tomorrow....
Spot cleaned the car, and waxed the hood and roof. Shes no show queen, but the hood and roof oxidize the fastest so I wanted to bring them up a bit. Also busted off the tails for some detail work and a reseal.
Tomorrow I will seal up the wheels(which ever parts are here) so I can get tires mounted up Wednesday morning. Vacuum out the car, put the tails back in, and lil odds and ends; should be good to go!

See you in Indy Gumby.

I waxed my car Sunday, polished up the tails and headlights, and just cleaned it up in general.  I plan to leave about 9:00 or so tomorrow morning for Nashville.

Just got back.  I didn't get to catch up with Gumby or Mark in Indy but did finally meet up shortly in Muskegon, MI.  Both guys were super nice and it was nice to finally meet them and see their rides in person.  I totally forgot to take pics of their rides though!

My car was running warm most of the trip so I elected to skip Detroit and come home a day early.  It did great out on the road as long as I stayed below about 72-73 mph.  After that my driveline vibration would rear its ugly head.  Only other problems I had were that my "Thunderbird" trunklid emblem fell off, and I got a pretty nasty rock chip on my windshield while driving through Louisville, KY.  Other than that we had a great time and saw a lot of nice cars!  Even got about 21 mpg.

I am working on uploading my pics to photobucket and post up soon.

Look at it this way atleast the rock didn't hit the new paint job :).

Sounds like you guys had fun. I really need to do this maybe next year. How were the hotel accomidations enroute?

Hotels were all great...I stayed in the Sline Inn in Muskegon which was really neat.

Here are my pics:  http://s495.photobucket.com/albums/rr313/50tbrd88/power%20tour%202011/

And here are a few of my favorites:

I overheard the owner of this Lincoln saying that this car put down just over 900 hp to the rear wheels!

Frank Currie '32 roadster.  All aluminum Boss 429.  Drove it to Bonneville, ran 205 mph, drove it home.  Awesome car.

This was a really clean hot rod.

Very nice fastback.  Had a mod motor in it.

Considering there were only three fox tbirds in the whole event, I dunno if it's that great of a feat, but thanks!

You guys aren't gonna like it, but I didn't get my camera out at all the entire trip. I had a blast, however, and hope that I will be able to do it again sometime! Great to meet ya Chris, and good to see Mark again.

Very good to meet you as well Gumby.

I actually did see one other fox 'bird other than our three:

It was a great time.

Quite a range in temps.  Indy was mid 90's, Metro Beach was high 50's.  Ton's of rain on Friday though (not that it slowed us down too much).  Great to meet Chris and see Gumby & Katie again.

We had a little caravan from Indy to Muskegon, with Gumby, my friend Ryan with his 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 and Nathan Sheets from Lingenfelter in a 640 HP Corvette.  Nathan posted some shots of us on their Face Book site at the beach in Muskegon.

Glad Chris Wilson took pictures, I didn't pull my camera out either...

Round trip for me was about 950 miles.  No issues with car, averaged about 22 MPG.  Glad I had A/C & heat.

It pretty amazing how worn out you can get on the Power Tour, even doing only a few days!  Can't imagine doing the long haul.

With all the different types of cars on the Tour, I felt Fox T-Birds & Cougars were under represented.

Hope things go well getting the trans back together.

Looking forward to our gathering in August.
