Title: header gaskets
Post by: 50tbrd88 on October 18, 2010, 10:48:04 AM
My BBK 1515 headers have already developed an exhaust leak after only a few thousand miles of use.

The gaskets that came with the headers were pretty questionable looking but dumb a$$ me used them anyway.

I think I need to go copper...any brands you guys recommend?

MR gasket from the part store.  cant remember the number but Oreilly's usually stocks them.  I use them on everything just make sure you get them tight heat cycle then tighten again.

Fel-Pro 1415. Retorque after heating them up and good to go. Have them on my BBK's and no issues.

Thanks guys.  I retorqued these a couple of different times but they still leaked (the ones that came with the headers were pretty junky).  I might go to NAPA and tell them to give me their best gasket...

Percys. They are re-usable,and I've had them for quite some time and two engines.

I will check on the Fel-Pro's.

Vinnie I don't guess I've ever heard of Percy's before.  The reusable aspect of it sounds interesting, however.

Personally,I always use the Permatex Hi-Temp Copper RTV. I apply it to the header (or cast exhaust manifold), assemble it and tighten the bolts finger tight, wait 24hrs for it to cure then torque to spec. So far, I've had zero failures on over a dozen installs. There are a lot of racers using the same trick.

lol,, use the same stuff on my wood stove holding the fiberglass rope on the door seal.  that stuff does do good around heat.

GE makes a better verision and thats what i use.
