Title: here I go again...COUGAR is on the car
Post by: sarjxxx on October 17, 2010, 12:21:28 AM
...but this time I like the idea a whole lot better than my Sable badge idea.
THese came off a 99-03 cougar. I don't know what year specifically.
I took a couple of pics for different placement and spacing... The pics look a little wierd around the cougar cause they have been photoshopped, the emblems aren't attached, they're just sitting on top of my old ones...
I think the hood ornament is going to be neat

You guys are sure getting emblem happy.LOL.... I'd say for sure a big "no" to the hood emblem. There's a big Cougar head in the grill, another emblem on the hood is overkill......On the trunk, I can almost see the "Cougar" and barely the "Mercury" working out (with the c-o-u-g-a-r letters placed fairly close together), but not the "V-6" emblem. Again, over kill....too much going on there. I've said it before, the lines on these cars are easily broken up and made to NOT flow by the simple placement of badges and emblems that don't really belong. Now,all that being said, it doesn't really matter what I think, in the end, it's your car and you need to do it your way to please only you. It's a personal thing, I don't think badges placed all over a car does the car well, especially these cars. Like it was stated by a fellow member when talking about a Thunderbird...Ford didn't put "Ford" badges on the Thunderbirds...they didn't need to, everyone knew that a Thunderbird is a Ford. Same goes to the Cougar. You don't need it. I see Chevy guys with a big giant Chevy emblem stuck on the window, Bow-Tie shaped exhaust tips, Chevy emblems, the wording "Chevrolet'. It's just too much. The lines of these cars do a very good job of speaking for themselves.

X2
The cougar letters look decent, but I would lose the v6 emblem, and definitely not put one on the hood for any reason. Maybe on the header panel, like the 4-eyes, but not on the hood. But as Vinnie said, there already is a giant emblem in the grille taking care of business.
I always wanted to use a late 60s-early 70s (not sure the exact year) cougar script emblem on my trunk, heh...

The v6 and mercury are already attached. They have been for a while. I do think i'm gonna ditch the v6 emblem and get another one. I've got my eye on one that I like... i don"t know for sure yet, I might ditch the one off the trunk entirely... i've got a couple ideas. The only thing I was feeling out here was how and where to place the c-o-u-g-a-r. I'm stuck real hard between the first and third pics. I'm kinda thinking i'll go with the more stock look of having them closer together, and a little further away feom the edge of the trunk.
I'll prolly ditch the hood emblem... I just want to use it but i dont think theres really a good place to stick it anywhere...

I would leave the hood emblemless and I think Cougar would be OK on the trunk if the script matched the Mercury script
And I'm stickin by the FORD emblem on my trunk :flip:
(1955 Tbirds had Ford emblems)

I'm going to have to agree, here.
The Cougar font is just not right for the 87/88 cars. It looks too out of place. Match that up with the different font of the Mercury font and the different font of the V6 badge & you've got one football bat looking project going on. No offense.

The Mercury badge on the hood definitely has to go. It's just too much. Not only that the placement is wrong and would look better on the top of the header panel where they were on the four eyed kitties. The round Cougar head is all that is really needed on the grille.
The Cougar nameplate on the back was used close together on the left side of the decklid starting with the 1999 models but the last couple of model years of that generation had them spaced out considerably across the decklid center. I do like the classic Cougar script used on these cars but the contemporary one would look best alone with no other badges.
The right side of the decklid is cluttered with the gigantic V6 emblem competing for attention with the Mercury nameplate. I would do completely do away with the V6 emblem which is a virture that is not worth bragging about. I would also do away with the Mercury nameplate and let the Cougar one speak for itself.
Less is definitely more on these cars.

I have to ask.......why the obsession with badges and emblems? Like stated above, with these cars, less is more. These cars just don't except those things well.

why add more to something that's overdone from the factory. It's not like someone can't tell what kind of car it is from the back... They took care of that with the backup lights at ford. I pulled mine off and it looked better instantly (http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy121/daminc-pics/puttin%20it%20back%20together/P5310030.jpg)

I understand what you're saying.I really do. BUT (there's always a "BUT").....I think what myself, and most others are saying is, you can be proud, and show pride, but even with that, one can go a little far and defeat the purpose. No-one is slamming you (not that you thought we did), we're just trying to help you. Sometimes we got into what we're doing and thinking so hard that we can't really see the big picture. It's like some of those cars we've all seen that have the bumper stickers all over it. The owner is making a statement, but there are times when the statement being given is over shadowed by the way it is presented. As I stated,in the end, it is your car and it has to be your decision. With that being said, also remember, on this forum, you'll most likely get an honest opinion from nearly every member, and take the opinions as such....just opinions. We're all here to help each other, even if it feels like an intervention. No hard feelings are meant by anyone, and sometimes,we need to hear the truth. When I do work on my car and post pics, I want to hear every opinion, good or bad. There are times when I need those opinions to make a good choice. If a couple disagree with my idea,so what. If everyone does, there may just be something to it. The love is still strong (brotherly love, not that prison love stuff ).

I started work today. I removed the old emblem and sed all the glue off the trunk, and I sanded forever trying to get all that fixed.
Next I have to remove the two on the other side and se and sand them down.
Then I am going to have to repaint at least the rear of the trunk for now. I am going to position everything in place and get them lined up right.
I have made up my mind where I want to place the "cougar" and its in place with scotch tape right now. I still have to get out there and level and straightedge the letters to get them all right. Then I will put the other side in place. Then I am going to scotch tape the letters to hold them together in the right configuration, and glue them on, and then glue the other side.
I am going with a configuration very similar to the 4th picture I put up. Its a little lower and farther in.
It definitely looks much better in person than on the pics. I don't know why but they really make it look bad. It doesn't look as bad on the car. Afrter I get them in place I'll take some more pics with better detail.

Remove everything and start bodywork and prep for new paint. Maaco can get you going for cheap, and it'll be pretty nice for a few years if you take care of it.

Macco would probably do a better job than I. I have no experience doing body work other than sanding down paint. I'm gonna get it painted professionally by a body shop down the road when the time comes. I've seen their work and its immaculate. They're pricey though.
(real paint) will probably be the last thing I do to this car. Its best to hold off on that while mechanical stuff and other things are going on, since there is such a higher chance of destroying your $3000 paint job.....

What Vinnie said... There has been a few times I have been given constructive criticism and I appreciate that. I don't flench but I do seriously consider if something is right or not for my car.
I even got carried away with my thoughts on my Mustang considering the stark black interior. Yes it has the factory bright interior trim package but in places it was not enough. However I had it in my mind that it needed a whole lot more and I got to the point I got tired of thinking about it so I decided to edit and leave well enough alone.
Another for instance, when the 2010 Mustang came out with the new console, I wanted it so badly and I was trying to figure out how to adapt it. I got tired of the idea and the thought of the money I would be wasting and now the idea is not important anymore. However I did get a set of 2010 dark charcoal leather takeoff seatcovers with preforated inserts and white stitching for $295 and that was the best decision I ever made.

Your gluing the stuff on the trunk? You should be using 3M adhesive tape.. Peel and stick and your done.. then when you want to change something. it won't be a big deal to remove and clean up.

But if I do that won't it cause the emblems to be raised off the panel? Besides, thats a whole lot of cuts to make because each one of those is a separate letter....

Well, the old emblem is off and glue sed off. I also had to sand down my destroyed paint and repaint it, with spray can of course:disappoin, but it is wet sanded down and with the exception of a gloss coat right there it actually looks nice and smooth and is a very close match to the existing paint. All that is left now is to stick on the letters. I have them attached to a strip of tape right now so that when I am ready I will glue the backs of the letters and tape them in place and not have to worry about them being uneven or misplaced.
I know some of you guys are very upset about me doing this but trust me, it really looks much better in person than on the pics. It's going to look real nice when its done, I'll get some closer pics to show it a little better.
Btw, vinnie, if you're still reading this, I was curious as to what made you decide to go with the 02-05 bird script over the similar 96-97 cursive script. They're very close and I just wondered if you considered it and if so what was the deciding factor there for you.
Title: here I go again...COUGAR is on the car
Post by: vinnietbird on November 02, 2010, 04:35:17 PM
I AM keeping up with this. You're driving me crazy with the emblems. I decided to go with the '05 script because it had the right font I liked that actually "fit" the car,it was the right size, and in the end, looks factory, not as an add on. It replaced a dull broken Thunderbird script as well. Same thing, but different. I try VERY hard to make everything fit as though it was meant to be where it is....whether it's the emblems, push to start button, cup holder, exhaust tips....all of that stuff. I have wanted to do a lot of things, but I take a couple of days to really study it,and most of the time I pass on it because it looks "ricer'. Less is more.....a lot more.
I think you'd be better off leaving the emblem application alone, and apply your time to detailing, under hood work, interior cleaning, trunk detailing, and things like that.As I've made clear forever....emblems get addictive to some people and they can't get enough of them. One leads to two...then to three, then every smooth surface has something stuck to it. Some cars can get away with stick on stuff. Ours don't take kindly to it.We are lucky to have cars that were actually designed right (visually) from the factory.

So, they're on. I love it. Honestly, the letters are the perfect font. They look perfectly modern with just a hint of classic feel to them.
Unfortunately, I must not have sanded enough before paint. however I don't care that much about it. Its hard to see unless your right up next to it. I am a little peeved that I couldn't cover up that one hole though. Oh well, 2 out of 3 and so bad. When I get the car painted professionally at the end of everything, I'll have them fix those holes and the spot in the undercoating. And then they'll put the emblems on right.

Dont flame me bro!
If it were me, I'd definitely ditch the v-6 badge (you're already on that) and yank the Mercury badge on the trunk as well. I think just the cougar on your trunk would look good.
If I ever add emblems to my car, they'll either say "5.0" or "4.6"

I agree.Remove the "V-6" and then....step away from the trunk. You will need to fill that hole in the trunk by the letter "C".When I have the Sport repainted, I have trunk lid plans. I do like the "Cougar" Nice.

I'd leave the Cougar emblem but that's it. Too much going on for me. These cars are supposed to be subdued without too much stuff tacked on.
But my opinion doesnt matter much, its your car so do what you think looks good.
