Are the bird emblems on a 85 turbo coupe the same as 87/88's??
I know they changed somewhere in there, but I'm not sure where
yes
cool.
Since Ford was kind enough to grace the MN-12's with NO c-pillar emblems, I am going to be putting some on mine.
There is a donor TC nearby that I swear the emblems are the only good thing on it, and I will be putting them on mine. However, its a 85 and so I need to see a 87/88 to reference the placement since the 96 is closer to that style.
Can someone take a pic for me that shows the exact location of the 87/88's by the rear window so that I can reference it for my own? Would appreciate, thanks
There really is not any room on the C pillar to put quarter panel emblems on an MN12 Bird. IMO, any other placement would look out of place.
Well, I'm gonna figure out something. And if I don't those emblems are getting pulled. They're in way too good of shape to let go to waste.
So if they don't show up on my car look for them in the marketplace soon
I beg to differ:

That actually looks pretty good, way to go!
Uhm, well I fixed the picture so you can tell...
Its not actually attached yet. I just grabbed them today and held them up there in place for the sake of taking the picture that proves that the in fact, do fit. You can see the nuts still attached to the back.
As soon as I figure out how to get the interior body panel off then I will be installing it. But for now I have no desire to drill rain holes in my perfectly good sheet metal:D
Two sided tape works really well and no rain gets in:D
yes and so does windshield caulk.
......but.....
I want to install it properly and attach the nuts on the backside of the sheetmetal,
1. Because it has a very slight curve that I need the emblems to conform to, and
2. Because I want to caulk them from the backside so that I can be sure of a good seal.
I will also add the tiniest amount of caulking to the backside of the emblems before they go on to be sure of no rattling and good adhesion.
Is the c-pillar curved? Personally,I think it's too narrow for the emblems to look right. That's probably why Ford didn't put them there.
Have at it ,,,,we expect pics ;)
yes but only very so slightly.
It is a little narrow around the upper half, but below that it's fine. Mine will be going somewhere in the 1/2 - 2/3 of the way down area, they look very nice there. (IMO)
should have bought a cougar. they already have emblems.

So here they are. It took about 3 hours to put them in, between getting all the tools, taking the inside apart and putting them on and cleaning everything up. not too bad
First, I checked and rechecked and positioned and finally marked the three holes where it would go. Then I took out the 1/8" bit and drilled. That hole was too small, I finally worked up to 15/64" they finally went all the way in at that size.
Then I took apart the inside panels and drilled pilot holes through the inside sheet metal from the other side. Then I took a 3/4" hole saw to the pilot holes and drilled out holes so that I could attach the nuts that hold the emblems on.
Then I took windshield sealant and gooped up the holes, and then generously gooped up the other side after shoving the pins in.
Then I took the nuts, attached, and voila! The nuts pulled it to the body and conformed to the curving perfectly, and at the hight I placed them at they don't face to far upward either.
I think they look great, and I am proud to be the only person I know of driving around a MN-12 bird bird emblems!
Unfortunately now I have to go out and get some touch up paint since I scratched the car putting BOTH of them on :punchballs:
Also click my ride thread and there are a couple more pics of full body shots.
Something's wrong. They don't look quite even :o
to be perfecly honest, I think the body is different. I measured and remeasured and reremeasured trying to get the second one to line up exactly the same, but I just couldn't get it.
They are within a 1/8" of each other though.
Also, the birds do not both face the front of the car like the cougars. Both birds face left when you're looking at them, that makes it look a little weird too.
I agree with Vinnie. The pillar is too narrow for them to look right. They also look awkward like they are placed too high to look balanced. It reminds me of people with Cadillacs that stick on the wreath and crest emblems in the wrong place, or worse yet an experienced body shop that does the same.
I even tried moving the bird emblem down to see if it looked better but they still never look right to me. What the MN-12 needed was a smaller quarter window for this to work.
I pondered all of this a long time ago when I had my 1989 Tbird. I thought it was best to leave them off. I would have also took the pins off the back and used 3M tape in case I changed my mind.
yeah, I dummy tested them all the way up and down the pillar before I decided on where I wanted them. But I really like where they are.
I had to leave the pins on because there is a tiny bit of curve to the sheet metal right there and it requires the pins to tighten them down and conform to the metal.
That s the thing about exterior mods. Its all about opinions, and you know what they say about opinions. Imo, I'm really happy with it.:D
Truer words have never been spoken , It is your car so yours is the only opinion that truly matters.:D
I must admit though I have tried things, that in my mind I thought were a good idea , and in the real world ..not so much
yeah like my mercury badge screw up:(
Score 1 for the cougar:evilgrin:
looks good though
