Title: 83 Canadian build Cougar
Post by: Coldcougar on September 29, 2010, 11:04:37 AM
Hey guys, im new around here, but I wanted to find out if any of you knew how easy it is to swap the stock 302 Cid 2 barrel for an aftermarket 4 bbl. Ive heard that the engines sometimes have the 4 pack intake but are connected with a type of restrictor plate that reduces the sizing to a 2 bbl, but im not quite sure.

Thanks in advance for the info, i can post pictures of the engine if you want.

as easy as ordering a 4 barrel intake, carb, and appropriate gaskets...then about an hour's worth of work with basic hand tools and your done...

welcome

2 barrel isn't a size, it's the number of barrels the carb actually has.. but dougy is right, it's a simple and easy thing to upgrade, anyone can do it.. you just have to pull any sensors/plugs/vacuum trees off your stock intake and find a home for them on your new intake, so you can hook things back up the way they were. then you just need to do (or have someone do) a minor tune on the new carb for it to run correctly

i know this thread hasnt had any action in a while, but could i slap a Quadrajet onto one of our engines? with a 4 barrel intake some minor modification of course.

You don't want a quadrajunk. Im a holley man but if you want a good carb that will give you good MPG and you will not have to tune all the time then get an Edlebrock or Carter. Quadrajunks are for chevys.

fair enough, but in theory, would one fit? Is a carb a carb, or are the bolt patterns different to the point that i would have no hope getting it to work, and would have better luck going for a holley or edlebrock

no, a qjet won't fit.. they have a small primary and very large secondary.. you need a special adapter to use 1, it's not worth it.. this is what a qjet intake looks like..

and this is the adapter you're supposed to use.. they're cheap, but the qjet is trash in my opinion

oh, and i recommend an edelbrock.. they're easy to tune and change jets/needles if need be

okay, so maybe something like this (http://"http://store.edelbrock.com/9906.aspx") is more appropriate? less in the way of having to get adapters and such

intake carb swap is easy for most people.
You can do it your self or pay 150 ish to have a shop do it.

yeah, but you can usually pick 1 up used for about half that.. check craigslist.. i suggest a 600cfm (like that) if you're staying relatively stock and a 650 if you're planning on throwing some other things into the mix like a cam, better intake, etc etc..

yeah, thats the idea, let someone else eat the depreciation value. i just sent a guy an email about a Holley over kijiji, so ill see what i can come up with on the previously loved end of the spectrum.
Thanks for the advice guys, ill come back if i have any more questions.:)

hate to bring this back from the dead (almost), but i was wondering if a holley 600 cfm would be a viable option for a fairly stock engine. ive already got the intake. its an edelbrock performer RPM, so nothing way over the top.
Im also thinking that with how the car -didnt- start this winter that its going to be a summer toy anyway.

The holley 600 would be fine with a stock 302 and RPM performer. The intake may be a little overkill for a stock 302 but it should be fine. It would be great for a stock 302 with mild cam.

okay, how about a 600cfm double pumper w/ mechanical secondaries?

That's a little much. I wouldn't recommend mechanical secondaries for a mild motor with an automatic. You'd be better off with a 600 single feed with vacuum secondaries. If you put a good street strip cam in it would be a good combo.
