I picked up my boy from school today and was on the way to drop him off at his friend's house, and noticed the temp. gauge getting high. Not a good thing. I dropped him off and stopped a few blocks away at Wal-Mart to check it out. I swapped the relay,no fan. I checked a little deeper and it looked like the motor was bad. I called Autozone, and they would have to order it,but, the Autozone in Gainesville (Texas) had one....40 mile trip coming right up. I got there and picked it up,brought it home, and all was fine until I looked a little closer. The Ford fan motor is flat on the fan blade shaft to hold the fan blade in place on the shaft. The new motor just has a round shaft. I've got a lifetime warranty on it,but still might get the Dremmel out and flatten the sides of the shaft like the factory piece. The shaft on the new motor is longer as well.I may have Autozone order another and I'll make this work until a new one gets here.It may be the same thing though. I need the Sport running because I'm NOT going to miss the appointment with the a/c guy Monday early morning. No real reason for posting all of this, just sharing the day I suppose.
News on the fix after I get home from the swap meet in the morning.I'm HOPING to find anything that I can use,or that is really cool.
Thanks for sharing , and good luck at the swap meet:D
Clutch fan FTW!;)
you named the problem.. AUTOZONE :punchballs: we get nothing but problems with the junk they sell
I'd rather deal with Autozone. I get better service.
It's not Autozone,it's the suppliers. It's probably the same motor I'd get at NAPA or Oreillys. One way or another,it'll get fixed today after the swap meet.I haven't applied any effort to the repair yet.I'll post the results later. I may find a fan at the swap meet and just take my motor back. That would make me happy. The motor was $76.00.I'd hit up the yards for one around here, but the fans are all gone. No worries,A fan motor is easy stuff.Better than engine failure,a diff. swap,or other high end costs.
A flexfan is another simple/quick solution.
I always kept the stock fan and shroud in the trunk. That way fan dies you can be up and running in 10 min.
...This is why you need a ride thread my friend:D
Oh, and hey, at least it wasn't a water pump failure!:punchballs:
maybe in your area.. it seems like every autozone in jersey hires the most auto-illiterate morons to work behind the counter.. and their duralast parts are pretty junky and don't last as long as napa/advance parts
was it a delco by any chance? i had a similar problem with a delco motor on a customers car.. i had to mic the shaft of the original in order to get the correct 1.. apparently their part numbers are mixed up somehow
The motor was a name brand, but it's gone and I can't remember.. It didn't work out,so,I took it back and got my money back. No-one in town had the motor I needed (everyone had to order it if I wanted it). The local salvage yard was closed on this Saturday....and they're always open Saturdays. It figures. I ended up buying a 16 inch electric fan and installing it in the Taurus fan shroud. It works great, blowing a lot of air,and after a nice test drive, everything stayed really cool. Done deal. Monday, the a/c is getting hooked up,and tomorrow,I'm taking the day off from everything....except cleaning under the hood a little bit.
Vinnie what year Taurus did you get your fan motor from? I did some searching and what I found was that 1990 Taurus fan motors show a round shaft while the 1995 Taurus shows flat sides.
Thats what i have on mine... just a generic 16 inch "Torq-Flobfan. Works great!
Me too....1995. At this point, the new one seems to work great, and I found one yard about two miles from here that sells the Taurus fans (the whole assemblies) for $35.00 each. I'll do some looking and can probably get them cheaper.
So far so good with it for me. I have only gone about 8 miles so far with it though.Tomorrow the Sport goes in for a/c work, and I'm sure they'll be running the engine so we'll see what happens. It does seem to blow a lot of air,and I think it'll work out just fine. If not,I'll just swap on another Taurus fan. I'll probably start grabbing them again as i find them.I had about 8 of them for a while. Now,they are all gone.Every time I want to go to the boneyard,it seems like something ha been getting in the way.Maybe later this week.
Well, the Sport is with the A/C guys.I have no idea when they'll be done. They are going to rebuild the two lines I had that were used.Hopefully good things will come of it.After 12 years with no a/c, My hopes are high, but expectations are low.
A flex fan should never really be used except as a quick fix in a pinch. They are not the safest things (they have been known to come apart), and they do a poor job at cooling. If an engine driven fan is what you want, you cannot go wrong with a good clutch driven 6 or 7 bladed fan. Get a good clutch though, the type with the spring on the outside so they are temperature and speed controlled.

The Flex-a-lite 1518 has cooled my high compression/supercharged 347 very well over the last 4 years.
On long trips,I'll start packing the factory fan. It has a new clutch on it.The Sport doesn't really do much long distance traveling, though. I hope to have the Sport back tomorrow.I will or I won't I suppose. I hate other people working on it,and I hat it being away from home.Only during paint has it been in the hands of someone else since I've had it. Very uncomfortable.
But a good clutch fan would do so with less noise and would take less horsepower.

I'm still sticking with an electric fan unless there's some kind of failure and I need the factory unit to get by on until I replace the broken fan. The electric fan keeps the Sport cool in any temp around here, even when we spent an hour in a parade barely moving in the hottest part of summer.
A good electric fan is a great thing! On my 442 project I am running a Mark VIII electric fan in a custom shroud and while I have not yet driven the thing, I expect it to keep the 600hp beast nice and cool.

My Taurus fan was great....til it died, but,it was 15 years old,so,I can't complain.I may grab another one eventually.
Going to get the Sport !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whoooo hooooooo !!!
Well,I went to pick up the Sport, and it's AWESOME to have a/c after 12 years of none at all in my cars (the wife always has full options in her cars, and they all have to work perfectly). It feels different than having a/c in the Nisan.I've always been used to just sweating it out....literally.The work looks great. He custom made two lines and they look great as well.Pics coming soon.....probably Friday after I clean everything up.
So what are the vent temperatures on what degree day? If it's still using the r12 cutoff switch setting (stock), there's much to be gained by adjusting it to like 20-22psi. It may not do much now if it's overcharged a little but when some leaks out, the cooling will be a few degrees better at all times than with the stock cutout (26psi?)
It's the 134R stuff. It's been fully converted, blows really cold.I'm not sure of the temps.I have a thermometer somewhere.I'll find out sometime.I'm really happy with it so far (all of the 6 miles I've driven...LOL).Once the windows are tinted, and the sound deadener/insulation installed,it'll all work together very well I believe.....I hope......I think.
For right now,the next project is cleaning the engine bay and giving the car a clay bar treatment and a good waxing. She spent two and 3/4 days away from home and deserves a little lovin'.It was stressful on her.
You're not by any chance using an HR-980 compressor are you?
I can't answer that unless I just made up an answer. It's a compressor I had for some time waiting for this day. It's like the factory unit, but newer.I believe it was a reman. unit.I really can't remember when or where I got it.I do know it was still wrapped and packaged for about two years until I opened it about a month or so ago.
My '88 3.8 came stock with an Hr-980. I'm guessing that's what yours came with too, but idk for certain...
Not to be negative (it's great having A/C, especially here in Fl) but I've heard those HR-980 compressors don't handle R134 that well. I can't name the source of this info though because I was in the process of replacing my compressor a couple of years ago, so I just don't remember. Some guy from a dealership in Ft Lauderdale ended up mailing my mechanic one and we recharged it with the old R-12.
Did you have your compressor replaced when the conversion was done or are you still running your original?
V8s didnt use the HR980s :D
this is a HR980

Everything original to the car is looooooong gone.Everything but the condenser and harness for the a/c was replaced. As I said, two of the three lines were custom built to fit my engine bay (strut tower brace, etc.),one with the dryer was brand new (I got it brand new for $9.00 on a lucky ebay score a year or two ago),new Good Year belt, replacement a/c bracket, steering pump and compressor. I can't ask for any more than they (Olde and New) did for the Sport.Very good work, and they stand behind their work. They have been around here for 17 years, and do no advertising. All word of mouth. Really great guys, and very honest.I dig that a lot.
Mine is like this one....not from these people though....

Im glad they hooked you up Vinnie , I could not imagine not having A/C
Then what I said is null....:toilet:
I thought they might have used the same ones. I know they used the HR-980 on the the TC's and SVO's.
Why didn't the V-8 get them?
I have NO idea.Perhaps it's how they mount up.I'd need to see a pic of the HR-980 to see the difference.
Go back up a couple of posts ;)
Thanks....No way would that bolt up to the 5.0 bracket.
But there is no cutoff switch that'll just install that is factory calibrated for the r134's lower running pressures. The system's likely cutting off at like 35 degrees at the evaporator instead of the more optimal 25-27 degrees (this will cause the beginnings of ice formation on the accumulator). In the car, this made a huge difference for me. You won't be able to adjust it without a pressure switch though (and potentially some way to reclaim some of the r134 if it's in excess) so eh, if you're happy, so be it ;)
That's what my factory compressor looks like.
Yes there is, a cut off switch from a R134 equipped crown Vic or F series is a direct swap :D
I actually think the switch (if it's the one on the dryer/accumulator) did come from a Crown Vic cop car....yellow on the bottom.I really didn't look to see if he used it or replaced it.
Lies! Okay, maybe it will. I'm curious on the price as I assume both work by turning a screw but if one's cheaper, it'd be good to know.
I grabbed a bunch of those switches at the boneyard. Some had the right plug for the harness, some didn't.The one from the Crown Vic seems to be what they used.Still working great after 8 whole miles and literally MINUTES of driving.
I dont have a manual, but I think the switch on the accumulator is the low pressure switch.... normally there is a Temp sensor that is stuck between the fins in the evap.... this Temp sensor is what cycles the comp when the temp gets to 34-36 degrees... right before freezing up... at least that's how a Nissan works...
I dont think we have them in our Fords
I did a little more research and best I can tell the R12 switch is white and the R134 switch is yellow .
Don't take this as etched in stone I may be wrong , but I think that I'm correct
Mine is yellow.
The Thunderbirds utilized the low pressure switch to regulate the evaporator temperature. There is no direct monitoring of the evaporator, though one isn't really needed.
