Title: After a 8 year hibernation...
Post by: shorangerbird on September 13, 2010, 01:21:41 PM
...she finally sees the light of day again.  havent had her out since 2002 for various reasons, but this weekend with the help of my brother, Bryan, we installed the new gas tank and fuel pump and fired her up. started on the 2nd try. idled a bit and backed her out of her cozy garage space and into the light. i dont remember what year i became a member here, but i know it hasnt been seen by anyone other than a few pics took as she sat waiting for the new tank. so here she is out, with cover removed and very dusty and now 539 miles!...lol. may make a few shows this fall........

Very cool!  Were the ground effects a dealer add on?  I don't see it on the window sticker.  Great to see one in pristine shape.

It's an 87, was it 88 where they had black highlights in the front lower corners of the bumper cover?  It might be different on a car with the ground effects.

Awesome!!!

thanks for all the compliments guys. it should really be attributed to my Dad, who passed in '93. he is the one who purchased it and added the gfx. in the late '80s he was friends with the GM of Atlanta Motor Speedway. in '87 & '88 they used a '87 TC to pace the races there. after being at the track and seeing it in person and riding in it, when he got home he stated he wanted a set on his just like it. well of course the pace car was contracted out by Ford, so a guy where i live in Anniston that has a accessorie shop(and is still in business today) was put in charge of finding some and installing them. my dad was particular about the mileage and the job. so at the time the guys shop was only big enough for 2 cars and no room for storage, so the guy pays for a storage rental unit down the road from his shop to store the Tbird while he gets the kit. took about 2-3 days for my dad to make a decision on the kit he liked best. it was ordered and came in and every piece was individually painted and test fitted before they put it on. in all, it took about a month thru the whole process. why the screws??? i have no idea. i assumed they were a necessary evil. next time i see him, i'll ask him about it. this was the first gfx kit he had done, and he took many pictures at that time detailing the process. i'll see if i can procure a couple at the same time....

If I had a car like that it'd have a LOT more miles on it....

Why has it only been driven that little?

If it had a LOT more miles on it, then it wouldn't be a car like that. No matter how cautious you are, more miles means more wear and tear.  :sorry:

Nothing that cannot be repaired by a high-end body shop.

Cars can be kept very nicely even with miles however, just look at the M5 I just bought. Nobody guesses it has 120,000 miles on it!

Shiny Side Up!

I can't really disagree with your statement, however, my Tbird has 250K on it, and it's in pretty good shape. Sure it's tired, but you can keep a car in good shape and have a lot of miles.

Please don't take this personally, but there is ABSOLUTELY no way your 250k mile car is in the same condition as a car that has been garage kept and only has 500 miles on it.

Yes you can keep a car reliable and in good shape for several 100k miles, but it will not be in the remarkable shape this one is.

Thread High Jack Over. Back on topic please.

Very sweet car, would love to see one in that shape in person someday! :D

thanks for the compliments guys. but just my perspective and feelings on it personally, if it hasnt been driven up till now, i'm not going to put it on the road. most of the mileage accumulated has been travelling to shows with it since my dad passed in '93. that i will continue to do, whatever miles that adds. but just to drive, prolly not. now when its passed to my kids....they may do whatever they see fit...

Are you ever going to get that dent fixed or leave it alone?

you could pop that dent out with your hand if you take the door panel off.. it may not disappear completely, but it'll look a lot better in that spot

but on another note.. HOLY $H!+ BATMAN!!!!!!!! i have NEVER seen an 87-88 bird look so  good!

Yeah, you get the dent fixed and maybe the gfx removed and that's a museum piece.

The problem with having it painted is then it's not original any more;)

I bet a paintless dent place could get that out. They have some wild tricks up their sleeves...

I remember you posting a picture or two in the past of it sitting in the garage upon request. Definitely good to see more! They say "ya gotta drive em" but if I had something that old or older with that low mileage I'd just run it every week and take it around the neighborhood once a month. Definitely worth keeping it that low.

I personally can not stand these vehicles with any sort of ground effects on them, but this one is so clean I can see past it.
