hi i just got my 88 t-bird back i sold is 3yrs ago and rebought it last week, but now it idles funny have to tap accelerator pedal to keep it idleing some times. Does any one know what might cause this? im going to start tuning it up here in a week ir so and get it back running great
check you IAC and TPS
I have a similar problem on my 1988 5.0 car. I've checked the IAC and TPS, replaced the TPS. Mine will start to stumble when sitting at a red light and then die. I'll be watching this closely, lol.
I had this problem for a while. If I revved up high and let it drop, it would stumble and die. Turned out to be a bad ground for the TPS circuit. Found it by trying to do the 1.0 v calibration thing. I would only get 5v all through the TPS range. Patched in a new ground and poof, Idles like a champ.
Fuel mileage got alot better too.
ok thx will check the ground and those things
Where is the ground wire for the TPS? Is it the same place on all engines?
if its not those, do a compression test. sounds like you might have a cracked head gasket. i had the same with my 93 cat. after idling for a few seconds it would start to stumble. but if i gave it just a little gas, it would be fine. does it act different if you unplug the IAC?
did you ever solve the problem?
I disconnected my IAC and it fixed the problem. It would idle at like two grand with the IAC plugged in. I dont even know why it is there. Car idles fine after I unplugged it
With the Iac unplugged, the computer cannot control the idle. (I)dle (A)ir (C)ontroler.
Did you ever figure out your problem?
