Title: Any ideas on what this box is?
Post by: PJsKitty on September 11, 2010, 09:43:36 PM
I could use some help identifying what this is. I think is part of the speaker system in the trunk from what I am told. However no one knows what this box hanging is or the one on the right.

And when the speakers are connected the volume only goes up to 25 before it starts cracking up. I had someone check it but they could not figure it out.

That is the factory amplifier, your car has the "Premium Sound" option, right? I'm not sure how it works on the later models, but the 83-84s had a switch on the front controls that allowed you to switch it on and off.

Your cracking up problem could be a lot of things. Are the speakers still the factory originals? If not, they're probably in terrible shape and should be either reconed or replaced.

The black box is for the keyless entry , the silver thing on the right is the amplifier

OH! LOL thank you, hum I was not given a code for the keyless entry how could I get one? The amplifier , would that go with the equalizer that does not seem to be hooked up?

Any thoughts on why the sound isn't clear above volume 25?

thank you very much!

I bought a book for this car but now I cannot find it when I need it.

Unless your speakers are pretty new, then you'll definitely get better sound with new ones.

If you go up to the banner above (the area with the pics of Tbirds and Cougars) there's links to two other sites, both sites have detailed diagrams to wire in an aftermarket stereo and amps to a factory Premium Sound system... :D

There's also a less-than-legit way of figuring out your code. Floating around the net is a sequence of 2000-3000 numbers that goes through all possible combinations with the least number of keypresses. If you're careful and patient, you can figure out what your code is using it. Unfortunately it's also a way for a thief to figure it out in ~20 minutes if he's practiced it a lot...which is why my pad is hidden and why I have it set up so that entering the code does NOT deactivate my aftermarket alarm.

The Keyless box usually has the code on a sticker on the side.  If not. Pull the box out.  Open it on the bench, and you will see the jumpers for what buttons to push.
