Title: Quick question, gas tank related
Post by: dragon574444 on September 02, 2010, 07:29:32 PM
Will the gas tank from an 84 Mustang fit in my 84 Thunderbird? I doubt it, but I'm replacing my tank and I can get a Mustang tank for free.

*Edit* It doesn't appear so. The Mustang tank looks way different. Now a new question. On coolcats.net, it says that the LS and GS models had a 21 gallon tank, and the XR-7 had an 18 gallon tank. My car is an Thunderbird Elan model, and I'm having a hard time finding a replacement 21 gallon tank, the websites only list an 18 gallon tank. Did my car originally come with an 18 gallon tank, and only the Cougars got the 21 gallon tanks?

From the '84 Owner's Manual:
Fuel Tank Gallons:
5.0L CFI  20.6
3.8L CFI  20.6
3.8L Canada 21.0
2.3 EFI Turbo 18.0

The 20.6 and 21.0 are probably the same tank. The CFI systems are designed to have a larger air bubble in the top for emissions systems.

The Canadian cars have carburators for '84

Thanks. Do you know if the smaller 18 gallon tank will work? Is the hole for the sending unit the same size, and will the tank straps line up right?
