I am needing a t-5 for my silver 88TC. will a V8 tranny from a mustang work up to 95? will a t-45 work? I have located several but I am unsure of the compatibility.
You're restricted to 83-93 v8 tranny's. The 94-95 used a longer input shaft, they can be used but you'll need to swap in an earlier V8 input shaft. They also used an electric speedo hookup that doesn't match the TC. The T-45 is a total no go. Uses a bellhousing that actually forms the front cover of the trans body.
You will need to have the pilot on the end of the V8 input shaft turned down to use it behind the 2.3.
A standard 4cyl. trans will work absolutely fine too.
V8 T5's came in two flavors. 3.35 or 2.95 first gear, with an overdrive ratio you may not like behind the 2.3, unless you like downshift for every small hill. In my opinion, for a daily driver, your best bet would be a 4cyl. unit.
BTW, PM on some details on the tranny's you find and don't want.
what Jangus said is correct, the piolt bearing nub is too big to fit behind a 2.3 with out some work
here is a chart on the T5 you will find helpfull
http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/T5ID.htm
the 2.3 NA mustang will bolt right in and work with out issues
unless you want to get the v-8 one and ill trade ya for it.
The other option you have is to have your crank milled out to accept the V8 pilot bearing. If you did that to your crank you could then run either a V8 or and I4
T5 with the use of a V8 pilot bearing for running the V8-T5 or you would run a V8 pilot bearing with a brass shim for the I4-T5
not having any luck :( found 3 one guy wants $300-$350 for his and the other two wont answer or return my calls
couldnt the crank be drilled to accept the V8 pilot bearing?
well i do have the trans you despratly want.... And i need a v-8 trans for my swap.
John, I have a C6 and a shortened D shaft if your interested. ;)
Graham,
How soon are you needing one. I've got several, but I won't be passing by your area until Thanksgiving.
John
jerry id like to keep it 5 speed if at all possible. If i don't find the v-8 5 speed i need i can just find the different bell and clutch fork and let it ride( till it goes boom!). lol
I wouldn't try it myself (just drilling the crank) if it were drilled just a little off it would cause issues like lining up the input shaft not to mention if you did actually get the input shaft in and it was putting things in a bind. I was going to do this to my last 2.3 but ended up swapping in a 302 instead of rebuilding the 2.3

I have bought a few parts from these guys before and they seem to be straight shooters

Anybody that says the 4cyl T5 can live behind a V8 will not get my business.
The gearing just isn't conducive to a long life behind a V8, not to mention first gear's vitually useless, and the overdrive ratio will kill the milage behind a V8.
Sort of like the guy on Omaha's craigslist who bought an 84 SVO and did a 351 swap to it. Kept saying in his for sale ad that the SVO T5 was stronger than the V8!? WTF, some people are just ignorant.
this is why i don't want to use my t-5 that i already have in the car.
John, it might last that long and it might not. guess we can see :D how much would you need for one or two?
I'd only be willing to let go of one. I do like to keep spares handy for myself. I'll pm you a price. If worse comes to worse and your trans takes a complete dump before thanksgiving, I could deliver for gas money. T5's fit quite nicely in the trunk of the TC.
Graham, there's an ole boy up in Kansas City that rebuilds T5's...always has an ad on CL....I think I've even got his # if you want me to text it...?
Ahh, here is his ad. LINK. (http://"http://kansascity.craigslist.org/pts/1909803021.html")
You're welcome old pal. ;):D
Jesus, add $200 to what he charges to rebuild yours and you could buy a brand new one.
tranny is blown except for 4th needing something asap..
That is Dans T5 shop he is one of the best here in the KC area and there are several people that I know that are running his rebuilt t5's that run in the 10's and 11's. He is pricy but the parts that he puts into his rebuilds are far better than what a stock new T5 would be
found a T-5 in springfield gonna go after it this weekend.
I can pick up a T-5Z for $1300, brand spankin new. Throw in $150 for shipping and your still only looking at $1450. And there are no used parts in it. NONE.
His ad says he runs an
068 gear set in his transmissions. Go ask him what he wants to build one with the
070 Zspec aftermarket gear set, and also convert the main shaft to a
cobra style pocket bearing. Both of these come standard on the T-5Z.
I'm not saying he can't rebuild a T-5, as obviously he can. I'm just saying there are more economically viable alternatives to his high performance rebuilds.
There's also the option of doing it yourself...guy here on the forum sells the videos..."badshoe".
Mine needs rebuilt...hmmm, winter project I think.
Table in the basp00get, heat, and the satisfaction of doing it myself=win.
nothing like a 500 dollar car with 5 grand' worth of parts dumped in. :hick:
that $500 car is what I'm stuck driving :punchballs:
Errr, I was referring to my sport lol ;)
lol I still hate that car
Does the "T" in T-5 stand for "TURD". LOL i cant help it.
Yeah, they're turds alright:whatever:
Mine has 175000 on it and it's just getting to the point where I'd say it needs a rebuild. It really depends on how they're treated and maintained. Change the fluid once a year and don't try power shifting without an aftermarket shifter and they'll live a long life.
If you are nice to them they can last a long time , I grenade-ed three of them behind my 289 HIPO, but I was not nice to them though
I did run a Hurst shifter though
Easy boyz!!!
