Hey all,
Oil pressure gauge is reading nothing (buttstuffog cluster on 88 XR7) as of today. The needle moved up to normal for a brief moment and then went back down to nothing. All the other gauges are fine, headlights on don't make anything spike. I suspect the cluster is fine.
The sending unit by the oil filter is covered in oily grit, is it dead? Hoping this is a easy fix!
First thing I'd do is check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge. I'd do that before even running it. Then I'd check the wiring between the gauge and sender by briefly grounding the wire on the gauge and having somebody watch it inside the car. It should swing to high. If it doesn't you'll have to find the wiring problem or the gauge itself may be bad. If it does, you know the circuit and gauge are good so that leaves the sender itself.
just turn the key on and ground the wire, that will at least tell you the gauge is working or not, it would suck to buy a mechanical gauge and all, to find out only your gauge was messed up
Sorry for the late reply, thank you both for your info.
I disconnected the wire to the sender, cleaned it (connector had stretch marks like it was corroding internally, needs replacing sooner or later) and plugged it back in...viola! Works perfectly.
