Title: cam timing
Post by: SR71blackbird on August 18, 2010, 09:07:05 PM
so my car is only going to 4000rpm and stays there. i know it has to be something with the cam timing for it to do that because thats all we have done. does it mean its way to far advanced and needs to be retarded alot?

well i just accidently moved the timing crank with the timing belt off... the crank is at top dead center. where should the white notch on the timing crank be pointing? lol im having one hell of a time with this...

Stock mechanical/static timing is 10* btdc.  Align the sprocket marks to the marks on the belt cover, disconnect the spout, start motor, check timing w/ light.

alright, right now on TDC, the timing crank is pointing to the alt. pulley. i'll be starting my car in about 30 minutes. i have to adjust the cam pullet first

should the ignition timing crank notch be pointing at the cam timing at TDC?

did you align the mark on the timing chain with the one on the crank gear? im not sure if its a white mark on the cam gear or a dot on the gear, but there is a distinquishable mark on the cam gear that should line up with a mark on the crank gear

alright i have the white mark on the ignition timing crank pointing at the cam timing mark. so the cam pulley and ignition pulley are pointing at eachother and the crank pullet TDC mark is pointing to the bolt on the ignition timing pulley.

dude read your other post

what brand of adjustable cam gear do you have?

most adjustable cam gears do not have a mark to line up with

now  that you know how to do it,  you can start playing with your cam adv/ret, bump ingtion time, and spark plug gap and boost levels and really get it runnin!

yep! im really looking forward to tinkering with my car tuning it up better bogusSVO.
it turns out the the cam was rotated a bit so put the cam pulley on 0 and rotated the cam until it lined up with the marker on the cover.

today im going to play with the cam timing. its guttless down low but the higher the RPMs the more power i feel. so im going to advance the cam to 4 degrees.

thats a good start, before you play with the time belt, you may want to try some more time advance (dizzy) I run some nutty advance 20* so you may want to bump that up by 2-4* at a time till you get pre/det/spark nock  then back it down about 4*

its a balance act betwen cam advance/ignition time and boost level get all 3 working right and you will be good

alright, cam is at 4* tomorrow im going to try out 6. every 2* degrees seems to get me 1000 more rpm of power lower in the rpm range. at 2* Adv i felt power at 5500. at 4* i felt it at 4500. so if it keeps going 6 should get me power at 3500 hopefully. with the spout unplug its at 13* for ignition timing.

once your happy with where the cam is, start bumping up your dizzy time...
