Title: putting it back together
Post by: daminc on August 17, 2010, 08:28:35 AM
I need to know the order to put the motor back together, so I don't do something stupid, and have to waste time to take it back off again.

The heads, oil pan, and timing chain cover are already on.
Thanks

basically i would put all the accesories on when you put the motor in the car. would be alot easier (but not on the back) and you know if you will have any clearance issues. But what you have now becides motor mounts is the way i would do it. but also i would possibly have the headers on it when you drop it in.

I would also put the lower intake on so you can use a motor plate to drop the engine in.

Is the trans in yet?

First time I did it, I bolted the oil pump on without the shaft. Thought about dropping the shaft through the top for about two seconds. Then I remembered how often Murphy's law applies to me, so i took it back apart.

I would complete the whole eng. except the upper manifold. It's always easier to set it all up out than in. We all know you don't mind doing it the hard way though.

I plan on putting it all in at once. AOD and all. But what gets bolted on first? water pump? intake? etc...

I would do the intake before the water pump Just because it makes that little 90 degree hose to the thermostat housing easier to install,
Other than that reason it doesn't matter which goes first

I dropped the engine and tranny in together as a unit, with the lower intake, motor mounts, and headers installed.I installed the accessories afterward. Without the accessories,I had a lot more room to stab the engine and tranny into the car.I also had help stabbing it in because I didn't want any accidents happening and the tranny ramming into anything like the firewall.I also used an adjustable engine lift chain. That way,I could angle the engine downward with the tranny pointing down, then lift it as I got it where I needed it.The accessories are really easy to install once the engine is in the car.Takes about 15 minutes.I mounted the compressor after I installed the bracket just because it was lighter weight to handle, and I installed the tensioner after I installed the alternator bracket because I believe there's a bolt somewhat behind it.Easy stuff, just make sure you have the painted surfaces of the body protected. Setting the upper intake on is a piece of cake.

In stall the water pump, timing cover ,and timing pointer before you install the engine into the car and make sure you have all of the bolts/studs where they need to be. Also install the lower intake.Upper is easy stuff.

There we go.... there is a way to do it, that's easier then just bolting stuff on blindly .. anyone else?

Got all of your clamps for the hoses and fasteners ready? All of the hoses front and back?

no hoses yet

The little 90 degree front hose and rear heater hoses are specific pieces.  Even installing the little front hose from the water pump to the thermostat housing with them already installed isn't too bad if you go ahead and install those parts.Especially if the accessories aren't installed yet.Once they are all on....not a lot of joy in it.LOL.If you want to spend a few dollars, the Good Year High Miler hoses (blue ones) are high pressure hoses, and ALL of them come in one box with clamps.I got all of mine, minus clamps, for $22.00 on Ebay (I made a lucky score). I imagine you want the black stock hoses though.Correct?

Yea, I'm going black hoses, and thinking porno red wires.

I'm using blue Taylor wires.Really nice wires. They sell them in red as well, and get the 90 degree plug boots in the kit, also, they aren't assembled at the distributor end,so,you make them exactly how long you want them. I installed my wire looms down the side of the valve cover then made the wires.Very nice results.

Throw everything on except the A/C and power steering. Just bolt the two together and leave them off, then throw everything else in. If you still have a stock oil pan, easy stuff. Leave the motor mounts on the motor, and put in the one bolt when its sitting right. If it were mine, I wouldn't put the motor in without hoses, except maybe the radiator ones. But if your waiting for parts, have at it.

When i did mine, my crate engine already had timing gears and cover, oil pump and heads already installed. all it needed was the accessories. All i had bolted on was the lower intake for the install. The biggest trouble i had was getting it mounted into the motor mounts properly, PITA it was by meself--of course it was done with a forklift, so it was a lot of back and forth until i was able to get it seated right. After that i worked my way up from the bottom. As for the thermostat 90 hose, i found it is much easier to take the belt tensioner off, so that broken bolt into the block can be avoided, that and it helps from getting rtv sealant all over stuff. All in all it takes about the same amount of time for me.

Far as the engine mounts go, I think they have to be bolted the engine first. ;)

Or else someone has a lot smaller and more dexterous hands than me :rollin:

yeah, but putting the through bolts through the frame mounts can be difficult sometimes.
