p.s. I know Good Luck right....:rollin:
Gayle said you called a short time ago. I will try to get a pic for you.Gotta go get some supper from the Golden Arches.
wouldnt it be possible to have the leather redone? maybe an upholstery shop? the wheel in my 79 is leather wrapped and is badly needing redone, finding a leather wrapped wheel for one of those is near impossible. :(
Graham , That's just it these shops around here just shake their heads nope we don't do those kind of Wraps any more. :punchballs:
Dan & Paula ;)
Oh Man,that's gonna be a real challenge.I'm going to add that to my list.
There was a guy on ebay that offered the service , you send him your wheel he recovers it and sends it back
I will see if I can dig up his info

these places do recovering
The way to go if you want it to look just like factory is to take the advice above. However if you want a project to do yourself, it is really easier to do then you might think. They sell tons of leather steering wheel wraps on ebay.
I have had several cars that I bought a leather wrap from auto parts stores and done them myself with great results. Auto parts stores nowdays don't carry the sew-up wraps as those premade leather covers with the plastic spine have taken over.
I have even redone the black stitching in my 08 Mustang in white to match the 2010 take-off black leather seat covers I have with the white stitching.
I think with my Tbird resto I will be buying a conventional wrap and sewing it on pretty soon.
My 08 Mustang stitching...
Thanks for the info fella's now only if I had an extra Steering wheel to use while the other 1 is being fixed. :poke:
D & P ;)
Dan,
Sorry to hear the leather repair guy was unable to bring it back to life, at least you have options to get it replaced.
Surely we can can come up with a wheel for you to use while yours is being repaired. I'm heading to my supply house today , I will see what they have :D
Just grab any old cheap steering wheel from one of these cars...or a Stang. It's just temporary anyway.
You could always make a new cover yourself. Trust me it is simple.
All I did was take the factory cover off measure up the new leather to the old cover. Then folded and glued the edges down. Then you need to poke the holes and stitch it on.
Stuckman
Thanks again for all of these idea's guys I'm waiting on another member's follow up on his steering wheel. :D
D & P ;)
Have you checked with the resto people. Type in "steering wheel restoration" and look what comes up. A lot of businesses out there to do it.
I have the steering wheel .. but it is worse shape than yours.... it you want/need a spare one to play with.... shoot me an offer...

With all of this talk,I think I may wrap the Sport's wheel.
I think you should Vinnie , I just bought a leather wheel instead .
Oh yeah any Fox platform wheel will work as a temp plus any of the ones off the boxy Crown Vics and Grand Marquis before they got airbags!
With the four spoke wheel I am using now I purposely cut the stitching at the seam and took the worn original leather wrap off intact and saved it just in case I needed to have it duplicated.
You should Vinnie!

Show me a pic.I'm not against swapping out the TC wheel.I'd like something that fits the car, looks good, and,if possible, has cruise. If not,I can find out how to move my cruise buttons to the dash. Also not a big deal to me.

WOW !!! That's nice. I want something close to that, but a little different.Hard to explain. I need to hit ebay and shop around.I assume you need an install kit for it?If so,it doesn't push the wheel out does it?
Grant also has cruise button kits to work with the cruise cars... The buttons slide in and out depending on the thickness of the botton spoke.

Grant's adpaters do not push the wheel out.
Got a ling to get one of those? I like that....or,the freebie way...just move my buttons.
If you use the standard spacer it does put it closer to you , but they make spacers from 1/4" and up to 3 inch
I use a 1/2" one
I can handle 1/4 of an inch, but I want it to look "right".
The one inch spacer puts it just about where the stock wheel sits.

WOW Vinny, did you see this lid?http://www.american-stitches.com/images/Wheels%20Leather/Ford%20Thunderbird%201988.jpg
Is that link the company name as well.I love that console lid.
 Dansbirds has agreed to let us borrow his extra steering wheel while we have ours releathered. It should only take a couple of weeks after they receive it then back home and on the Cougar it goes. :headbang:
D & P :D
I gotta know....how much $$ is it going to be?
Don't know. Just saw it while browsing examples on their website. Maybe time to make the phone call. Yes. When I saw that I said "Vinny"!
I'm checking with them about my console lid and my pistol grip shifter . I hate the billet aluminum,it's deadly when it's been siting in the "over a hundred degree" temps.I need to throw a cloth over it and see if it helps, but hot is hot.
Try a sock! You can embroider it with a Tbird logo... :rollin:
But yeah deadly was touching the tools that were closed up in the trunk of my Bird yesterday... Hot hot hot! I had to let them sit in the shade before I could use them.
Now,take tho0se tools and set them in direct 100 degree sunlight for 8 1/2 hours. My hand caught on fire.
Literally branding irons!
Thank You  Dansbirds very much for letting us borrow this loaner steering wheel untill ours is returned friend. :D
