Title: New to me
Post by: jandmmustangs on July 19, 2010, 07:24:19 PM
Not a T-bird, not a cougar......

A 1980 Fairmont Futura.

88K on the clock
Inline tower of power
Auto

She was sitting in a local junkyard for the past 4 years.  1 owner car, no cancer.  The old woman junked her because her mechanic said the fuel tank was leaking.

No fuel leaks, just needed a new fuel pump and battery.  Runs like a dream.  Im feeling a 5.0 HO EFI swap along with a stang dash, console, door panels and seats.  A nice 8.8 with 3.73's and an AOD.  Just a cool cruiser.

I owned an 80 Merc that had the 200(3.3L) engine. Ran forever, one of the only cars able to be sold when I was finished with it.

Amazingly enough the A/C still works.  Its low on R-12 but it still blows cool.

Thanks all.  Ill keep ya updated on the progress.  Some D-bag swiped the seats and steering wheel (gotta love vicegrips).  So far Ive grabbed a red 2 spoke wheel and back seat for her.  Good thing I didnt throw out those red 4 banger stang seats :D.  And no, it won't burnout.  I tried and mr state trooper came up behind me and told me to get the car offa the road.  I guess it coulda been worse, no inspection, no reg, no ins on the car.  Just got a "get it outta the road" from him.

Wow, cool and clean find!! I had a bright red one about a year ago....a guy made me an offer on it, apparently he felt he needed to own it more than I thought I should build it!! LOL Cash talks!!

Anyway, have to comment on something else in the pics... I SPY AN ECONO-TRAILER!!! I think I bought a total of 3 of those over the years....I'd buy a new one and own it for a while, then someone would talk me out of it, I'd go buy another one to replace it!! Good light-weight trailers for sure!! I miss having one around now!!!

Keep us posted on the Futura's progress!!

Later, RAY

I would love to have a Futura!

It was originally a downsized Tbird prototype. And yes the custom black Futura shown is da bomb! Most of the dash is already a Mustang. All you need to do is swap in a full gauge cluster and a couple of dash trim plates. Matter of fact the full Mustang gauge cluster and console was offered as an option on Fairmonts. The Futura grille was purposely designed to mimick the 1960 Thunderbird grille. I keep saying they should have held off two years and made this the downsized Tbird for 1980. It would have made more sense with the same basket handle roofline of the 1977-79 Tbirds. I think customers would have accepted this more than the actual 1980 that we got.

The 1983-86 LTD front end is a great looking direct swap for this bodystyle. A 1981-82 Granada front end will work too but it's not as attractive.

Beauty in the eye of the beholder of course! What makes it is the basket handle roof design related to the 1977-79 Tbirds. I still love them and I remember when they first came out. I wanted one. I was too young way before I got my driver's license in 1980.

I also always liked that strobe roof pillar to quater panel stripe... I actually like this car more than the Tbird I have.
