Title: Anyone With an 86 Thunderbird/Cougar with a 5.0
Post by: jpc647 on July 19, 2010, 03:16:03 PM
I need a picture of the A/C bracket on your motor. A couple would be a plus. If you could measure the dimenstions also, and post them, I would be very grateful. I'm trying to replace my A/C compressor with an Idler pulley, but there is only a listing for an 86 thunderbird/cougar pulley. Trying to determine if they are the same or not.

The '86 is the same as the '87/'88.

Trying to find the stang brackets I need. Either way I need the pulley. Hoping someone on here might have the backets.

Also I found an accurate description for the pulley:

Make  FORD
Model  THUNDERBIRD
Beginning Year  1983
Ending Year  1986
Engine Type  V8
Liter  5.0
CID  302
Engine Size  5.0L/302
Engine Family  Ford small block Windsor
Application Notes  Fits models up to 02/86.

Now my question is, what is different between the early 86 motors and the 87-88 motors? I called Ford, just to see if they could tell me, but they cant. I obviously have to use the mustang brackets and such, but just for my curiosity, it'd like to know what Ford changed.

Sefi motors have the same brackets. The CFI had brackets similar to the 3.8's.

Well I guess that would be the difference. I'm going to guess cars made in hte first couple months of 86 are still CFI cars.

Negative.  The Mustang A/C and power steering brackets are totally different than those that were installed on the Cougarbirds.  If your looking to do an A/C delete whether it be with an idler pulley or the Ford racing kit which does the full delete without a pulley, you will need the fox Mustang power steering bracket.

That's what I thought as well.......about 95% sure,which leaves 5% for being totally wrong.

In about a week I'll have a polished steering pump bracket and an a/c delete kit to sell.I'm installing my a/c compressor and bracket back on the Sport.
