Title: My 84 Tbird drag car
Post by: Dave_C on July 19, 2010, 08:52:14 AM
Hello all.  I'm new to this forum and have been a member for a few days.  I'm finding lot's of useful info.  Great site.  I thought I would post up some pics of my 84 tbird drag car.  It will be street legal, just not very streetable.  99.5% track use only.  I might take it down to the cruise night on occasion.

Currently doesn't have an engine.  I bought it as a roller and I'm collecting parts for the engine.  I have the main parts and they should go to the machine shop soon.  I'm building a 598 ci BBF, injected alcohol for fuel.  15:1 compression, Ford Racing A460 block and TFS A460 heads. 4.600 bore X 4.500 stroke.

The car:

Around my area we only have 1/8 mile racing.  No 1/4 stuff.  I will run mainly brackets, but I hope it can run 5.20's in the 1/8.  That would be equal to around 8.20 or so in the 1/4.  If it can do that I will run some of the 5.30 heads up index classes like ORSCA and ODRA have at their heads up events.  It's not all that light.  Only glass is hood, trunk and dash.  Only lexan is in the doors.  It should come in around 2750 w driver, BBF and powerglide.  The car had a BBC before I bought it and it was 2520 w/o driver.

I wanted to slow down and have some fun.  My previous car (sold in May) was a rear engine dragster with an injected 588 BBF.  It ran 4.60's and 70's (7.30's 1/4) and had become a lot of work with between rounds maint.

by the looks of the tail lights and the feathered bird emblems I would say its more like an 85 or 86 and not an 84.

Might be.  I was just going by what the previous owner told me.  It doesn't have a vin tag.  Is there any location on the body that might have the vin # stamped so I could find out?

Does it not have a title?  how are you going to get plates for it if it isn't able to technically be able to be traced to an owner?
Great looking car though!  I like BBF's too.  My truck in the sig has a 545 in it.  Nitrous and pump gas calculated right at 700whp

Often vehicles with a 1984 build date get incorrectly titled as a 1985. The only way to tell is the 10th digit of the VIN number if you can find it.

However if the grille, taillamps and bird emblems are all original then it is a 1985 or 1986. BTW, the center pin location for the attachment of the newer style quarter pilar bird emblems does match the earlier 83-84 straight bird emblems, so there would be a hole that would need to be filled and a new one relocated unless you the center pin and just use the two outer pins.

Yep.  Definitely an 85 or 86.  Good looking car though.  I like the blue and normally don't like the blue.

I'll get some more pics this week.  Working now.

It does have a Mustang dash.  It's a fiberglass dash for a 95-98 Mustang.  It's from Hairy Glass.  Part #357
http://www.hairyglass.com/mustang.html

I got a grill for it today from one of the board members here.  The grill is an 85 and is identical to the one one mine, so I'm guessing mine is an 85-86

The engine will be a 598 bbf.
I'm collecting parts right now.  I have or have ordered most of the major parts.

I have or have ordered:
Ford Racing A460 block
Trick Flow A460 18 bolt heads, at the head porter shop now
custom aluminum oil pan from Charlies Pans
4.5 stroke 4340 crank, 6.8 H beam rods and Diamond dome pistons
Trick Flow single 4 intake
Comp Cams roller .830+ lift
Danny Bee belt drive
Ron's Terminator mechanical fuel injection for methanol.
Lot's of other odds and ends.

Still need my valvetrain, lifters, rockers, stud gridles and the front dress, damper, water pump, crank trigger.

The goal is 1000 hp 900 torque n/a and reliable.

Some pics of my block and new custom pan:

I kinda figured that you might have the racer type fiberglass dash the way you ride is set up for drag racing... But hey I love that style dash for our cars!
