That sucks, It's not easy replacing parts on that.
Oh NOOOOO!
definately not a Mustang, where you can order a complete car out of a catalog......i have a job ahead of me....sigh.
time for an old fashioned :beatyoass:
What happened? Somebody back into it? Insured, I hope...
Is it just the hood and grille that need replaced?
Its insured.....
this douche bag in a Chevy Pick Up doesn't bother to look behind him as he parallel parks and backs right into my car. This happened around the corner from my house! Initial damage is hood, latch, front bumper, grill is toast, front valance, radiator, and possibly fan shroud, but i have not gotten under the hood yet. Its stuck closed right now.
Better question is: does the douchebag Chevy driver have insurance..?
Sucks man, really hope to see and hear of it getting fixed. That is a sweet car.
He does have insurance, but im filing with my company and they can sort this mess out for me, as thats what i pay for....it will get fixed right, and thanks for the kind words about my once glorious ride....
That's . I would seriously freak out...
Oddly enough this is the second forum I've seen the pics on. I guy I know from Toledo (Phil, has a blue torino and a red torino vert) posted these up on another forum. It really is a small world...
His cars:
Man that really sucks , Its a nice car ! It reminds me when I lived on Long Island and I had just parked my 73 Montego on jericho tnpke and some dude ran into the back drivers side quarter panel and destroyed the back and drivers side . I had just gotten out of the car . His insurance paid mighty well to fix my Montego . Hope all goes well with yuor claim .
Phil is one of my Torino bothers! He is a Moderator over at TorinoCobra.com where im a regular poster....it is a small world.
And this guys insurance will pay too! How long have you been off the Island?
Don't worry it will be glorious again! You ride is one of my favorites I have seen...
too kind, thanks so much!
Moved out of Mineola in 92 , Now I Live in Maryland .
!!........I would be so pissed, but that never helps the matters none. I am sure she will be back good as new ,looking good as ever once again.
The dude who hit me is based in Virginia, since you are close by, maybe you can drive up there and kick him in the knee for me? :beatyoass:
This is why I keep my T-bird in the garage all the time. Most people who drive suck at it:hick:
I believe I would do more than just kick him in the knee !!!!!!! :hick:
.:disappoin I know the feeling(kinda.) My cougar got backed into and got a HUGE dent under the ps quarter glasss.
Course my cougar is not a 1in1million find...
hey man, pain is pain, your car is special to you like mine is to me, so it sucks just as much for you as for me.
Here is the a list of the official damages so far:
Hood is totaled
Grill is totaled
Grill Housing totaled
Upper and Lower valance totaled
Hood support totaled
Hood latch totaled
Front bumper needs repair and rechrome
AC Condenser totaled
I suppose im lucky the fenders and extensions were spared damage......all in all it could have been much worse.

Man that sucks, you'd think someone would notice a nice car like that and not hit it. But it was a chevy driver, so that's why.
Was the guy who hit you sorry at least? Or was he all matter-of-fact...
I know it doesn't change anything, but it adds salt to the wound when somebody plows ya and there like "it, this ruins my day, *sigh*" and act like it's your fault.
When some dumb lady was going 45 in a 25 right through a red light and broadsided me in my geo metro (after she got stopped about a 1/4 mile down the road) she comes storming up to my car and tells me the light was green, yadda yadda. Not "are you ok?" (which we weren't, all 4 of us took an ambulance ride). Good thing I had witnesses who saw the light was red for her and green for me. Anyway, nothing like being totaled AND scolded by the moron too.
The guy who hit me was humble and apologetic, it was a stupid accident, in that he backed up suddenly to park with no warning and never checked his mirrors.....he was in a Chevy pick up that sits much higher than my car, and if he had even glanced behind he would have seen me. It is a frustrating exercise, but my car will be fixed beautifully and i will get some nice upgrades out of the deal as well....so all's well that ends well.
Here is the final look i have settled on for my car when its redone......what do you all think?
I love it!!!!!
So the other Insurance co. has accepted 100% liability....looks like i am getting a total repaint out of the deal too!
Yes, because only Chevy drivers are incompetent....:blahblah:
Vehicular stupidity is irregardless of brand...so eat it.
To the OP: sounds like everything has worked out really well, and are you going with the blue, too? ( i dig it...;))
No I don't think a Ford person would hit a pristine 1970 Torino. They would try to park more carefully.
I know I felt incompetent when I drove this russian roulette car. 1 in 6 chance that it wouldn't start.
It will look awesome in blue , I hope it turns out real good for you man !!
I had a white 1991 Lumina 4 door once!
The blue is nice but I sorta hate to see the color change! However hidden headlamps would rock!
I decided on the color change as the car pictured is my stock/factory color with the stripes.....as for the hideaways, i prefer the open look of the standard grille....JMHO
Well hey that's cool... No right or wrong of course! It's all about what you like! ;)
I just think the open headlight grille has a more aggressive look to it....
I personally dig the hideaways better ,
but it is your car so open lights it will be :D
Have you thought about adding the GT stripes like these?
http://www.phoenixgraphix.com/ford/sk1405.htm
I think they would look awesome.
They are called Laser Stripes, and i plan to add the white/Blue ones....see the photos posted earlier......
i just settled with my Insurance company today. This is the story:
1. They settled with me for $16,000 the full amount of my policy.
2. I buy the car back for $4,000 salvage, no salvage title though.
3. They pay off my $3,800 lien i still owe on the car....has to be paid off once its a salvage deal.
4. Im left with about 9K to complete replacement parts, and repairs.
It was a little tough going with them, but i persisted and got my way.
So now i am waiting for a check so i can get all my parts people to supply me, and im still looking for a affordable shaker hood and shaker, that is closer to me, so i can save on some shipping perhaps.
Why wouldn't they just fix it outright?
It has to do with percentages, as i exceeded the amount of reasonable repair, so once they total the car, you buy back for salvage. But thankfully no Salvage title goes on the car.........
You need to look into that. I don't have a salvage title on my vert, but it pops up on the carfax when it happened in Illinois 5 years ago..
No title on cars older than 1973...in NY that is. Just a transferable registration.
cool, mine was a salvage and rebuild title for the car in Illinois
I have a rebuilt salvage title on my silver TC but it is obviously 2 cars welded together....
not sure what happened to the vert. don't really see any major repairing except for a couple holes welded on the floor. then again it wouldn't take much damage to total the car out. it's not worth much. A fender would probably exceed the value of the car.
pretty sure mine was rearended hard enough to need a whole back half of another car.
the check arrived today from my Ins. Co. let the rebuild begin.....lots of pics coming in the not too distant future......
I eagerly await pics:D
Found my replacement hood today...... super clean and rust/dent free. Not an easy find for a 40 year old part.

I'm glad you where able to get what you wanted from your ins. co. Are you still going with the shaker? At first when I sw you were changing the color I thought no way man but since you're going back to the original color I think it's awsome! It's going to look great blue. I kinda like the hide away lights myself, of course I always use headlight cover on mine. It's just a matter of taste. Whatever you do with it I'm sure it's going to be great!
So you are partially right, i am going with the shaker but staying with the current color scheme, as the budget wont allow for a total repaint right now. I am blacking out the hood and adding the shaker, chrome hood locks, and keeping the hood tach. (See the red Cobra pic for my exact set up. Here are a few pics to give you an idea of the finished look. hideaways just were not in the plan for me, both for aesthetic and $$ reasons. I prefer the open headlights anyway, i think they are more aggressive looking for the era.

So what kind of hood locks are you going to be using? They don't look like all the other ones out there, and I'm looking for something a little more low-key, just having trouble finding them. A link would be great. Thanks!
P.S. I'm sure your car will look fantastic when it's re-assembled.
The hood locks were for Torino 70-71 only, but im sure they could be made to fit other years, cars etc.....you will need the hood lock set and will need to fabricate the hold downs that attach the top of the radiator. The locks are re-popped in the MAC"s catalog....
http://macsautoparts.com/search.asp?sb=0&ls=y&camid=FAI&year=0&make=&ss=hood+lock&x=0&y=0
i took a 8 hour round trip up to Mass. to procure a replacement hood for the Torino today. Its a beauty....rust free, dent free and straight as an arrow....this had to have been hiding in a garage for 25 years. 40 year old parts dont grow on tree's. I met up with a Torino buddy while i was up there and had some breakfast, he met up with me in 68 Fairlane 500 Fastback, in Grabber Blue. Really nice car......here are some pics....Im in the shorts and brown t-shirt....

1 part down.....
Jerry, i will have everything else i need in hand by next week. Im starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel....
That's great, wish I was closer to put it together for you.... It looks like a fun repair. BTW, there's a slim chance of me coming down to LI in the fall.
I will post frequent updates here Jerry...
Ohhh, please let me know when you are coming so i can plan accordingly!! We'll have a blast!
You bet.... There's a couple people I'd like to meet up with. The oyster fest is jacking prices for our plans though... I'll keep you posted. We would be visiting Brentwood.
Brentwood is fairly far east of me, but a hell of lot closer than Buffalo, so i will work it out. Try and get me dates as soon as you have a better idea that you are coming down....
you got it.
UPDATE! Work has begun on the Torino....here are some initial pics from the body shop for you to see.....and i found out tonight im getting the entire car re-sprayed as well for no extra cost! My bodyshop guys rock!

It's like Christmas... You know what I mean..lol
this whole rebuild is like having a major woody at Christmas time, LOL
Kind of a shame though to do without the nice scooped hood...
Nah, its cool, as im adding the ram air with shaker scoop....see pics earlier in this thread. Im adding the scoop, hood locks, hood tach, and laser stripes for the side of the car......and im getting a repaint in the same color.
Looking good, sir. It's always interesting to see the "work in progress" pics.
Is that grille surround all in one piece? Good ones are really hard to find! Going with a shaker, huh? We did one on my brother's GT (below). Real or reproduction? My brother's was a reproduction from the guy in New York...a really nice piece. Cutting the hole in a nice flat hood is nerve wracking stuff.
Glad to see you're fixing it.
The new grill surround is near perfect condition as was the hood....I was able to source a real (original) 351 shaker and hood trim ring for the car. Got lucky on that one....but the fiberglass ones are very nice as well. Im cutting the shaker as well as the hood locks. Have your brother sign up at TorinoCobra.com forum. Its a great group of guys over there......
Progress made today, was my Dixco hood tach went out to Gary the "Tachman" for a rebuild with new internals. I should have my hood locks and template hopefully next week. Thats the only parts i'm waiting on....

that poor poor, gorgeous car :( .. just look at it on the bright side, he didn't mangle your fenders
on another note.. a baseball bat to his truck would help blow off some steam :D
Thanks for the sentiment, but i am far away from feeling sorry for myself anymore. I settled with the Ins. Co. and my car will be even cooler than before the accident. The shaker install is the first step.....

Is the car bluer now ? It looks fantastic
Wow it really looks good! I bet you're happy to be so close to having it done.
Hope you don't have to drive it home in the snow...
Lookin good, David
Car is looking awesome!
Looking beautimous again!
She is coming together nicely !!
Thanks to all or the encouraging words! Its been a real work in progress.........hood tach, hood locks, shaker and hood blackout all yet to be done. More pics as soon as she is done.
Here is a picture of my cousins former Torino I thought I would share
Thats a real nice Formal roof Torino....i wonder is the shaker original to that car, or was it added? I will have the hood blackout as well, and hood locks and hood tach as well as shaker. Its going to look badass.....
The shaker was added as were a set of GT taillights
here is the latest update. Rocker mouldings added, Hood blackout done, and Lasers added.

Looks awsome! It looks like they did a great job!
Awesome!
, looks badass!
getting ever closer now......
Looks like it's coming along nicely.
I’ve always wondered if there are any modifications that need to be done to the ventilation system in order to put a '71 hood on a ’70 car or vise versa. Did Ford change anything underneath in the cowl area when they omitted the slots in the hoods for 1971?
Brent
Nope, they're the same...just no vents...
the vents were on 70 cars about halfway through production and was changed mid year to no vent. I do like the ventless hood better with my blackout hood to be honest.....
If they made it a mid-year changover, this would make sense as I've seen more than a few '70 cars with what I assumed were '71 hoods installed.
Thanks for the info.
Brent

Thats why i plan to enter again next year. Its such a dramatic difference in looks now....
if you happen to win, they should write a story on it's tragic accident and it's revival to what it's become(ing) lol
Hood tach is all thats left to be done...........woo hoo!

Going back to Magnums? We did 15x7s and 15x8s with 275s on the back of my brother's car. It looked badass.

That is too cool!!
Took her home yesterday morning, what a awesome feeling to drive it home. I just want to publicly thank all of you for your timeless support, brotherhood and friendship during a very nerve wracking experience. I doubt i could have made it all these months without you guys. A few comments:
1. Im still on the fence about the Hood tach.
2. Shaker has to be connected up.
3. Top has to be redone.
4. Front needs a 1-2" drop.
The carnage:

Looks great!! I'm sure you're glad to finally have it home.
Looks beautiful !!! I'm proud for you. I would have to say no to the hood tack. The hood looks great with the shaker, don't stick a lump of tach behind it. Too distracting. Let the Shaker shine. Again, Beautiful !!!
ok now that wasnt cool... I was reading and getting all excited about seeing the finished car and saw the damage pics and nearly had a heart attack!! I was thinking OH NO!!! what happened on the way home with the car :( so I kept scrolling down and got the relief of the finished pics lol
I think the hood tach is period correct and would complete it. Just part of your car to me though.
you know david, i was about to get very upset when the first pic popped up.. i thought she was hurting again lmao
This is my single biggest issue with the car right now......i just cant decide, so its staying off for now i think.
God forbid Chris! LOL I dont think i could endure another go-around with the car so soon.....
David,
The car looks great!!! Congrats on the photo contest too!!! Did the laser strip come on the car originally?
Yes, it was a blue laser stripe car...here is the marti report:
i don't think i could endure the wait to see a finished product again LOL
That looks great! I know you were considering another color, but that really looks nice with the laser stripe. I wouldn't change a thing (leave the tach off).:D
Im glad i stayed with my current color...its really different than any other 70 Vert i have seen. The stripe kicks ass for sure, im really pleased with them.
i was bored and shot a few more pics this morning......
